Was Tallstar a hypocrite when he took Mudclaw's position away, since Mudclaw was too aggressive?
Back in his day, Tallstar was just as, if not more, aggressive than Mudclaw.
He went in a black out rage, and almost killed his own clanmate, he probably would have, if Hareflight hadn't stopped him.
I know that dumb clan mate of his deserved to have his butt kicked, but still.
Then, he left WindClan for the sole purpose of killing another cat.
I know he didn't go through with it, and he was mad with grief, but that's still highly aggressive behavior.
Mudclaw had his reasons for his aggressiveness too, WindClan had just been driven from their home, then, the battle with BloodClan, and then, the two legs tearing the forest apart, of course he isn't going to be a happy camper.
It's obvious that Tallstar is a great cat, and that he chilled out A LOT as the years went by.
Why didn't he give Mudclaw the same chance to change? Mudclaw could have been someone, he could have been a contender!

i dont think its hypocritical since he has changed and aged since then and clearly mellowed out in his old age. he might have felt he lost his own edge and picked mudclaw who had a similar edge to his youngerself.

I understand why he picked him, but I don't understand why he then gave his position away to Onestar. Like, he picked Mudclaw for the reason you said, and then he also demoted him for the exact same reason.

It's a little unfair to Mudclaw though, because Tallstar made him his deputy, and he was deputy for over a year, which is like 15 years to them, and then, Tallstar was like, "Okay, so I didn't really think this through..." What did he expect was going to happen? Or was he planning on never having Mudclaw be leader all along?

As much as I love Tallstar, his biggest personality flaw seems to be he just does things without thinking that far ahead.

Frankly, I think Mudclaw was made deputy because of his aggressiveness. Tallstar isn't necessarily a pacifist, but he sometimes is. Mudclaw is a good cat to balance Tallstar out... in a war. Note that Mudclaw was probably made deputy after BloodClan war, when tensions were still high and the clans were vunerable to outside attacks. Mudclaw would be a valuable asset to offense and defense there. However, as time passes, it becomes clear that there's not so many threats to WindClan - in fact, what WindClan needs is prosperity and peace, and maybe a cat willing to cooperate with other clans. Onewhisker is the idea candidate here. Not necessarily hypocrisy, just circumstance.

Though, if Tallstar wanted someone who was less aggressive than Mudclaw, but could still protect WindClan, and had experience and the respect of their clanmates. I still think that Tornear would have been the best choice. And unlike when he chose Onewhisker, Mudclaw probably wouldn't have started a rebellion. I think he'd be more inclined to trust Tornear over some guy he's never even liked.
