I changed my mind on Hollyleaf. I still adore her, but she's done some things I can't forgive. But we'll get onto that later.
First off, to me, she is the most interesting character. She's flawed, but has good traits as well, which makes her relatable. It seems like she suffered from a lot of anxiety as a 'paw with the pressure of becoming a warrior (which is probably why she wanted to do things one at a time) which is something I definitely related to as a child myself when I used to have school.
I also enjoyed her "obsession" (I call it extreme loyalty) to the warrior code. Out of all of the protagonists and antagonists in the series, we've never had anyone so dedicated to the code like this before. It made this trait extremely interesting to me. But it also made me believe that it was the perfect way to use this chance not to be one of the Three. While not thinking of a power for her was a stupid excuse, I understand why Hollyleaf couldn't be a third cat. Realistically, in the warriors world, her extreme loyalty to the code was very unhealthy. She often had anxiety whenever someone broke it. She was very controlling and I can see Hollyleaf using her power to control someone & force them to follow the code. This is why I am pleased with the plot twist, because Hollyleaf in Po3, would have forced the code upon her fellow Clanmates. I also feel like she would have done the same as Hollystar as well. Even as a child, I still felt that she wasn't the right warrior to become deputy. I never wanted her to be deputy unlike most of her fans. I may be a Hollyleaf fan, but I never agreed with others that she would have been a good deputy for ThunderClan.
I also believe Hollyleaf has ptsd. This was shown in Hollyleaf's Story, when she kept having flashbacks and "shuddered" them away. I believe she also had nightmares from time to time, which made me sympathetic to her.
Hollyleaf has an extremely interesting arc, probably the best one out of the others. She's loyal to the code but made mistakes in breaking it. She's gone through hard trials that made her do the crimes she did; it wasn't because she wanted power, or because she wanted revenge. She killed Ashfur because she thought it was the right thing to do. And after discovering the truth about Leafpool & Crowfeather, this tore her heart apart. Her own birth had broken the code. She wasn't supposed to even exist. Crowfeather didn't even want anything to do with her. She felt alone because she couldn't trust anyone. She knew she messed up & knew rhe Clans would judge her and that is why she left. It's cowardly, I won't deny that, but I understand why she left. Hollyleaf went through too many things at once, and I think this is why she was never able to act mature about everything. Imo, not only did she kill Ashfur to keep the secret, but I think she wanted to take her stress out on someone. Ashfur was perfect. He threatend her, he wasn't innocent in her view, and he was going to ruin ThunderClan. So she killed him and took everything out on him. She thought it was the right thing to do, to protect herself and her brothers. She didn't even feel guilty until Fallen Leaves told her it was wrong. She made it up to ThunderClan, gained their trust back & worked hard. She saved two 'paws from a fox, taught them how to fight in the tunnels to defeat Sol, and paid with her life in thd end to save Ivypool.
I like her. I don't love her, but I like her. She's definitely the most interesting one to me.
Now, as much as I like her, I still can't forgive her for the way she treated Leafpool. I'll let Ashfur getting murdered slide; she felt bad, paid for the consequences, and let's be real, he's a jerk and deserved it. Ashfur wanted to hurt Squirrelflight for immature reasons. It was out of selfishness and he didn't care what would happen to anyone as long as it hurt Squirrelflight.
But I can't let the way how she treated Leafpool slide. I can't forgive this. This is the only reason she's not my #1 favorite anymore like she has been for years. She wanted Leafpool to commit suicide, and that felt so wrong and disturbing to me. Hollyleaf felt 0 remorse at the moment, and she only let Leafpool live to go through the pain of loss. She mentally abused her, while Leafpool was already going through so much shit. She didn't care about her feelings. Leafpool's pain actually hurt me as if it was my own when I was rereading Sunrise. As a child, I thought it was nothing. I wasn't aware of how damaging this was to Leafpool. But now that I understand things better as a 24 year old adult, with more life experience, I just can't forgive this. I just can't. I was heart broken for Leafpool, and it looked like she even wanted to cry at the fact that her own daughter wanted her to die. It's just so sad. I'm glad Hollyleaf forgave her and made amends for her, but this is something I refuse to forgive. This was damaging to Leafpool, and probably the readers themselves.
But apart from that, I still think Hollyleaf is the best thing in Warriors. She's done stupid things, but she has positive traits too. She has done unforgivable things (like the Leafpool incident) and while I may not like that, it makes her a realistic character. To me she is extremely well written and relatable, the most likable one out of the Three. Hollyleaf may not be my 1st favorite anymore, Cinderpelt has replaced that spot now, but she is my 2nd favorite. She's very interesting and I am happy with the plot twist.
