I wrote something similar about this on the original forums.
Medicine cats should battle train. I don't believe training once or twice is enough. There are cats here who are heartless and won't hesitate to kill a medicine cat. Take Breezepelt for example. He was willing to kill Jayfeather and even said he doesn't care that StarClan will be angry if he kills a medicine cat.
I know most cats have fighting instincts, but it would help medicine cats a lot if they had more training. If this was the case, Spottedleaf and Ravenwing both wouldn't have died. They were killed because they didn't have enough warrior training.
However, I wonder if medicine cats who have trained as a warrior will take things too far and even kill their enemy? Hawkheart did so, and he wasn't hesitating to hurt Bluepaw, either, who was an inexperienced apprentice. He knew this himself, too.
I don't know, I just think that mentors should train their medicine cat apprentices more than just a couple of times. It was even written that Leafpaw tried to remember the battle moves Cinderpelt had taught her, which meant that she hasn't practiced enough to know the moves by instinct.

I thought Leafpool and Cinderpelt did some training? Maybe I'm wrong though They did, but only once or twice. I don't believe it's enough for the apprentices to remember. They have to practice in order to defend themselves properly in battle. And with Cinderpelt's crippled leg, I don't think she taught Leafpool enough.

Cinderpelt trained as warrior first, before her accident. Hawkheart, Mudfur, Yellowfang and Mothwing actually were warriors before they decided to, (or had to) become medicine cats. With Ravenwing I think it was more shock and surprise that got him killed rather than lack of battle training. Mapleshade jumped him in the dark at the Moonstone, the last place anyone would expect to be attacked.
But for the most part, yeah. All cats should be required to have battle training.

I agree, however the medicine cats probably do receive more battle training than we see, it's just not all too important for us to see it. We're also unlikely to see them use those skills unless they were really forced to since most medicine cats tend to avoid conflict.
I'd also like to see them receive hunting lessons because medicine cats are made out to be completely dependent on the clan for both protect and provide for them.
It'd be nice if we got a medicine cat that was both athletic and good at meddy stuff (with out having been a warrior before) if you know what I mean.

I believe Featherwhisker was shown to be good at hunting. idk about fighting though.

If I remember correctly, Goosefeather didn't have any training at all. He was completely defenseless when that badger attacked him. Of course, it would make more sense for him to have had some training after what happened to Ravenwing.
