hello! this is the current WIP for "CypressClan" - 1 out of 4 other island based Clans. The others are "ShellClan", "PalmClan", and "CoveClan". There's an art page made by the wonderful 𝚜𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚔𝚜𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚝𝚎𝚛 as well. There's a chance you may have seen this on the planning page (the overall name is "submerged"), so it's been in the works for a while. Spark and I have been working really hard on ideas for cypress so this is kinda precious to me. None of the leaders have properly started a page for one of these Clans yet, so I thought I'd go ahead and get a head start real quick. If you have any questions (or would like to start making/claiming characters), then by all means - my PMs are always open. Please refrain from posting on this page until this RP (and all of the others) are properly opened. i'm open for suggestions as well
that's it! enjoy the thread for what it is so far hehe

The cats of CypressClan have lived in peace for many moons. Marked with darker pelts, sleek fur, strong hind legs, and large paws to balance atop the "root bridges" throughout their territory, the cats are far from weak. However, new threats are arising and hostilities are growing greater than ever before. A storm is on the horizon, and hopes are diminishing.
But that is just what happens within the shadows.
- cypressclan's main plot -
unbeknownst to the rest of the clan, a certain cat is abusing their position - feeding water lily petals to unsuspecting cats, alongside their freshkill. the knowledge of waterlily and its effects have been long forgotten, and so, no one truly knows what's been causing the sudden deaths. the clan is growing uneasy, and questions plague their mind - questions that, maybe, will never be answered. what's happening, who's behind it, and why?
deputy: 20+ moons (has to have mentored/be currently mentoring at least one cat). The closest cat to the leader (besides kin), and trusted advisor. Deputy positions can be revoked at any time if the leader deems the cat to have changed and now be unfit to success them.
prophet: 14+ moons. The prophet is the spiritual connection of CypressClan. They have prophetic dreams, and work as a communication medium between StarClan and the living. Prophets are forbidden from having mates and kits, and are chosen by our ancestors. If a cat is training as a warrior and has a prophetic dream, they must assume the role of the prophet. it is believed that only one is sent out per generation - or after the last prophet has died. If a kit or apprentice receives omens and prophetic dreams while the other is still alive, then the other teaches them their knowledge. Clan life without a prophet has proved to be chaotic in the past. The only cats free to cross borders without causing a skirmish.
healers: 12+ moons. Healers are highly skilled in the usage of herbs and medicine, helping the clan battle sickness and injuries rather than physical enemies. Though able to have kits, only one healer may become pregnant at a time. It's a complicated rule, but Cypressstar had deemed it a necessary one to ensure the Clan's safety in having a working healer at all times. A healer apprentice does not count as this "other cat".
warriors: 12+ moons. Warriors are the providers of the clan and are highly skilled in hunting and fighting.
apprentices: 6-12 moons. Apprentices are cats too young to receive their full names, that are training to become either prophets, healers, or warriors.
queens: 16-55 moons. Queens are mothers with kittens. Occasionally a permanent queen will stay in the nursery and help expecting mothers through the process. Once kits are born, queens are required to stay in the nursery until they're at the age of three moons in order to ensure the kits' health. Expecting a queen to do things for herself is considered rude, and every cat is encouraged to help in the nursery every so often.
kits: 0-6 moons. Kittens who are too young to become apprentices.
elders: ~60-death. Retired cats. Elders are often viewed as the most experienced cats of the Clans and are honored for their service. Apprentices are expected to change their bedding.
that's it! enjoy the thread for what it is so far hehe

“It’s a hard thing - loving too much.”
Darkness. That was what the tom remembered. A fast moving darkness, shrouding his vision in a vignette, threatening to strangle him.
The news was too much.
“It had to have been a mistake.” The words came out rushed, enveloped between breaths that were becoming more rushed by the second. This was impossible. “He didn’t mean it. He gets aggressive sometimes. He's a good deputy, though, he always has been. You can't send him away.”
The words that came from the other cat were blurred and fuzzy - somewhat like a blanket, though this blanket carried no warmth, but rather, a promise to suffocate him.
Who was he, really? Hunched over in a haze of his own sadness, lacking the poise of a leader; he was no leader. Cypress? Cypressstar? Picasso? Was he defending the cat who killed Palmer? Had he no shame?
The night fell rapidly. The tom padded slowly to the Clan his brother had once lead.
Had once.
In his mouth, a bundle of warmth. On his back, two more lay resting. The one in his mouth mewled tentatively - seemingly aware of the sudden shift in air. The tom spotted the others quickly, and, once he had gotten to them, dropped the kits gently.
“I stayed true to my end of the bargain. Now you stay true to yours.”
One cat took on the task of collecting the kits, but the other stared at him with a piercing amber gaze; a smile creeping eerily onto her tabby face.
“Your deputy killed our leader. Expect nothing from us.”
An elder lay with apprentices surrounding her - her ever weakening legs shifting slowly as to prop herself into a more comfortable position.
“You know the rest of the tale.” Her eyes glimmered, looking over the younger cats who lay by her gently. “Now tell me, what was Cypressstar’s biggest fault?”
“He was an incompetent leader!”
“He was too trusting.”
“He was-”
“No.” The elder smiled, though even that minuscule action proved to tire out her aching body. “Cypressstar’s biggest fault was merely that he loved too much.
It’s a hard thing - loving too much.”

"We live in the marshes. CypressClan has found a way to adapt to life above water - balancing atop root bridges and leaping from tree to tree. We are the shadows - flying gracefully through the night - though unlike the shadows, we will not be left behind"
Twilight's Watch: Found at the tip of CypressClan territory, Twilight's Watch is a wide expanse of cliffs and rocks. Named for the remarkable view of the sun setting and rising, and despite being a wonderful vantage point - the journey to the beauty is not the simplest. Although, if a cat so chooses to brave the slick rocks on the way up to the peak, their efforts are definitely returned with a sight nothing short of magestic. Twilight's Watch is sometimes seen as a "spiritual area", with some elders wishing to see the view for the last time before succumbing to their weakening strength, while others ask the healer to feed them "StarClan's Greeting" while on the peak. Young apprentices are not allowed here, however, due to incidents that have occurred in the past.
The Herb Grove: Nestled in a small clearing between two smaller lakes, the grove is constantly fed water from the surrounding area. As a direct result, even during dry spells it's full of plant life. However, the grove has no natural protection and - as such - the clan needs to keep a vigilant eye on it. CypressClan is proud to have one of the (in their eyes) best herb groves - with plants flourishing almost every season.
Crocodile Coral: A small and murky lake surrounded by mounds of vegetation. Named for the crocodiles that gather during breeding season, Crocodile Coral is nothing short of a dangerous place. Located close to the ocean and on the edge of the territory, only some are willing to brave the area in search of "plovers" as prey - or, some are sent simply just to scout the area. The plovers gather around breeding season, and are seen as a warning, of sorts. As the crocodiles get territorial and protective of their eggs, cats (though not forbidden) are discouraged from going during breeding season. However, apprentices traveling to Crocodile Coral, or warriors traveling alone are forbidden.

- camp -
Located on one of the driest parts of their territory, camp is definitely a change of pace from the waters covering the earth below. The land is higher up, shrouded with the largest cypress trees seen for miles.
Each den is located under the roots of said trees, with the nursery and elders' den being the most sheltered, followed closely with the medicine den.

leader's den: Located under the roots of a large cypress tree, the leader's den is the most unsafe of all the dens - being closer to the water's edge and less secure around the "walls".
medicine cats' den: Though the entrance - much like all the other dens - is located under the roots of a bald cypress, the healers' den goes deeper into the tree as to have space to store herbs. The two (or three) healers sleep inside - though more towards the front - with the prophet sleeping at the very back for optimal safety. Warriors will sometimes sleep outside the den, though typically only in leafbare, when the rest of the Clans' herb stores grow low.

warriors' den: The second most unprotected den, after the leader's. The deputy sleeps at the entrance.
apprentices' den: Though the least spacious of the dens, it's large enough for the apprentices. Trainees are expected to create and gather their own bedding - so inside, there is a large variety when it comes to designated sleeping areas. Some have nests made of feathers, while others have chosen to use moss.
elders' den: A den very much like the others, though the elders have a very large expanse of land in the front of theirs. This is due to the occasional elder wanting to step outside to enjoy the stars and warm breeze in the warmer moons. The den is always guarded with a warrior - with the role of who is going to be the guard for the night being decided by the deputy.
nursery: After the medicine den, by far the largest. The nursery's ground is lined with a mix of feathers and moss as to make sure the kits are safe and warm at all times (and the apprentices are expected to make sure that this is always the case). The areas exposed to the outside world are covered with mud - a feature that the nursery is fortunate enough to be the only den to have. Water Lily - The Whisper of Death - If a cat consumes even just two or three petals of this plant, they will begin to die. The process is slow, and most don’t even know they’re dying until it’s too late. The cats’ final few moments are painful and should not be wished upon even the worst of enemies. Often times when deaths are very sudden and unexpected, it’s as a result of consuming the Whisper of Death. Healers are strictly forbidden from its usage.
Duck Weed - Temporary Temptation - Applied to basic wounds as to soothe pain. Duck weed will not prevent infection.
Bristly Sedge - The Bandage - The stems stick to fur easily, and as a result, is widely used to stop bleeding.
Fringed Sedge - Warriors’ Hope - When dried, it’s applied on wounds to stop infection from setting in.
Aster - StarClan’s Disguise - the petals are often mixed in with bundles of bitter herbs to mask the taste. though not that strong, aster does a good job of soothing mild belly aches on its own.
Buttonbush Root - Territorial Healing - Chewed into a pulp and used to soothe bites from predators (especially useful with mink bites)
Water Willow - Elders’ Relief - the woody base is given to (typically, though not always) elders to sooth aching joints, while the plant itself is chewed into a poultice and applied on cracked paw pads
Cypress Bark - Yowler’s Miracle - Used for tooth aches
Swamp Milkweed - Child’s Play - The only herb that is definitely safe enough to be given to kits to eat. When in full bloom, the blossoms are eaten to soothe pain; however, these plants only grow in green leaf.
Porcupine Sedge - Poultice Cage - Healers remove the spiky seed head and use it atop of poultices - it stops them from rubbing off.
Spikerush Root - Scale Scare - The roots are applied to crocodile bites. Though not an everyday occurrence, healers are recommended to keep lots in store, as when crocodile attacks do happened they can be deadly, and lots of the herb must be used on one cat to prove effective.
Water Horsetail - The Basics - It is chewed into a poultice and applied to wounds, it is used to stop infection.
Boneset - The Wandering - A traveling herb. Helps keep stamina up, though particularly, keeps a cats’ strength at a high. Sometimes given to elders weakened by age.
Swamp Sunflower - Touch of Ice - Primarily used to ease fevers - the yellow petals have shown to be almost miraculous in their healing power - it’s brought down our very own Cypressstar’s body temperature down to normal in a day when he was burning up only moments before. It also helps with headaches
Swamp Sunflower (Seeds) - StarClan’s Greeting - Though the petals continue life, in contrast, the seeds do not. Death by sunflower seeds causes no pain, and are actually an encouraged method of freeing elders’ and other cats in pain. The deaths are fast, though only carried out in request of the individual in pain.
Swamp Rose Mallow - Killers’ Killer - The petals are given to cats to make them throw up. Quickly gets out and heals poison from a cat’s system - poultices made from it can be spread across wounds and it will extract the poison from them.
Mare’s Tail - The Protector - Given as a precaution in times when there are greencough or whitecough outbreaks, since it prevents the two diseases (and a few others)
Blue Iris - Bone Mender - Helps heal broken bones
Rush - Bone Bond - It is used for broken bones and keeps a broken limb in place
Bogbean - The Mewler - Helps soothe sore throats
Cattail - Gift of Life - Used as a painkiller. Especially useful during kitting.
Lizard’s Tail - Mothers' Miracle - An extract of the root is used to heal wounds, and when made into a poultice, can be used to soothe mothers who are sore from feeding their young
Reeds - Journey of Moons - Small portions are given to cats as traveling herbs. However, the effects are stronger and longer lasting than most traveling herbs and is not recommended for apprentices or younger, smaller warriors
Wrinkled Leaf Goldenrod - Multi-purpose - It is chewed into a poultice and is good for healing wounds
Swamp Rose - Mask of Sweetness - Used to mask the bitter taste of herbs, but is also fragrant enough to mask the scent of death
Water Lily - The Whisper of Death - If a cat consumes even just two or three petals of this plant, they will begin to die. The process is slow, and most don’t even know they’re dying until it’s too late. The cats’ final few moments are painful and should not be wished upon even the worst of enemies. Duck Weed - Temporary Temptation - Applied to basic wounds as to soothe pain. Duck weed will not prevent infection.
Marsh Marigold - Ray of Light - The petals and leaves are chewed into a poultice; the juice can be used as well. It stops infection, stops bleeding, and is used for inflammation and stiff joints.
Bristly Sedge - The Bandage - The stems stick to fur easily, and as a result, is widely used to stop bleeding.
Fringed Sedge - Warriors’ Hope - When dried, it’s applied on wounds to stop infection from setting in.
Fox Sedge - The Mother’s Gift - Chewed by nursing queens in order to produce more milk
Aster - StarClan’s Disguise - the petals are often mixed in with bundles of bitter herbs to mask the taste. though not that strong, aster does a good job of soothing mild belly aches on its own.

- rules -
I. The Basics. Follow the forum rules. This was a given. We don't want to be deleted because some people failed to follow the basic forum rules. Please also refrain from godmodding/powerplay.
II. Literacy. This RP is considered semi-literate and thus anyone who joins will be expected to post a minimum of three lines of text with proper spelling and grammar for each character; of course, not everything can be perfect 100% of the time, and that's okay! Just try your best and there'll be no issues. If you have important cats such as deputies, healers, prophets, etc, however, we expect you to post more than this, around four to five lines. Please avoid using "text talk" and abbreviations in your posts unless you are talking out of characters. If you are talking OOC, please make sure to indicate it in someway - whether it be brackets, parenthesis, or a different method.
III. Activity. In terms of activity we ask that you post at least twice a week, three times if you have an important role. These should not simply be chat posts, and if you are actively communicating but neglecting an RP post, we will ask you to try and respond rather than chat. If you are missing without notice for over a week, one of the leaders will send you a notification prompting you to return. If you do not respond to that prompt within a week you will be removed from the RP. If you want to leave the RP, please send us a message and we can discuss what to do with your characters. If you are going on a trip or can't meet the full activity limit for a long period of time, please reach out to one of the leaders and we will put you on hiatus until you can return.
IV. Relationships. We ask that you keep all romance in this RP PG, with common sense dictating when to just 'skip'. LGBT+ characters will be allowed and any hate and intolerance out of RP will not be tolerated. When joining with characters that are related to another person’s in some way, please make sure to ask them if it is okay first. This is especially important when it comes to mates as no one wants their characters to be thrown into a relationship without being asked first. Don't join with crushes - let those develop naturally! We ask that you don't plan relationships way ahead; try the two characters together and see what works. You'll know if they work well together.
V. Realism. We ask that you keep all characters realistic. This includes physical appearance - such as not making cats with purple fur or rainbow eyes - but also includes personalities as well. Every cat should have flaws, and the joining form is designed to help you think of some. Be realistic in their abilities as well; if a crocodile were to attack, there is almost no way that the cats involved will come out unscathed. Please keep that in mind.
VI. Ratios. Have at least a 2-1 ratio of male to female/female to male. If you make 4 females and 1 male, then we'll ask you to either make another male, or delete one of the females. This ensures that everyone has the potential to get a mate eventually, and it also fits in with the realism rule - no Clan is ever comprised of only females or males.

- four clans' main plot -
A "plague" type of epidemic has just hit, unlike any the Clans have ever seen before; to add insult to injury, a drought is sweeping the lands as well. Prey is seemingly becoming scarcer and scarcer by the day. PalmClan holds the land bridge, and is able to travel to mainland for prey, but CypressClan holds the herb grove. Hostilities arise, all the while CoveClan and ShellClan are left to make a choice - who do they side with? Betrayal runs wild - prey being traded for herbs, and vice versa - with some cats unable to remain calm in these dark times.
Eventually, their prayers to StarClan are answered with rain. But, it's larger than anyone could have ever suspected - the rain being merely a disguise for the storm on the upcoming horizon. The land bridge soon becomes uncrossable, and with some stuck on the other side, the question arises:
What will the Clans do now that they are
s u b m e r g e d?
- cypressclan's subplots -
Ripplestar has been said to be a direct descendant of the original Cypress. Those that know this (primarily the elders) are worried that she will prove to be as unstable of a leader as her grandfather, and tensions are high; the leader's paranoia doesn't add much reassurance to their thoughts, either.

forbidden romance between dewstar (of palmclan) and finstar (of shellclan) - to be developed
- history -
"Though CypressClan's history is rich, it doesn't come without its downfalls. Betrayals have occurred, and cats have been hurt in the process. The shadows always carry their own darkness"
I. the discovery
Generations ago, there was a ship wreck. This ship carried two-legs, yes, but it also carried Ariel, Picasso and Palmer.
This is where our story begins.
The siblings made it, but the two-legs did not. As most other siblings, the trio got along well, but that didn't mean they didn't have their quarrels from time to time. After exploring the island, Palmer took on the trees, shortening his name to Palm. Ariel took on the beach, changing her name to Shell.
And Picasso took on the marshes - now going by "Cypress".
Did Cypress have his faults? Of course; all good leaders should. Although, the tom was both gifted mentally and physically. He was well-muscled - seemingly made just for the initially grueling task of leaping from root to root, complete with a handsome, sleek coat; his ability to think out situations completely and choose the right solution almost every time was a baffling trait to most. So what were his faults?
Oh, we're just getting started.
II. the betrayal
It was a day like any other.
That is, until Palm died.
The loss of a brother is great, especially so when sharing a connection as strong as the connection Cypress and Palm shared; meant to work together, as the tide works with the moon. The moonlight was certainly not meant to be diminished so soon. Though his heart broke for his brother, Cypress' thoughts were clouded with more grief - a tall tower of stones barely balancing atop one another. For how had Palm died?
At the paws of his lover.
Cavernecho had certainly been far from perfect. He had been aggressive, and one to anger easily. But that hadn't stopped Cypress from loving him any less.
The day of his banishment had been one filled to the brim with sadness for the leader. Unbeknownst to many, he had given up their kits in an attempt to bargain the deputy's freedom. The night he had given them up was the last night he had seen his precious children. The last night before he had lost his mate, as well.
The Dance of Sorrows.
The tower of stones came crashing down.
The moons to follow were far from happy ones. The tom's refusal to pick a successor drove the Clan mad; his stubbornness to take any action causing the claws of many to unsheathe.
He disappeared within six moons.
III. the current
Now, CypressClan is lead by Ripplestar. The she-cat is a direct descendant of Cypress, or so it's been said. It was believed that her father, [insert name] was the only kit that Cypress had left in his own Clan - after all, PalmClan only had knowledge of the fact that he had three children, not four. In delivery, [insert name] had been the runt - weak and frail - and would likely not make it longer than a moon, and so, the leader, his mate, and their surrogate, had decided to keep the fourth kit a secret.
The kit had beaten the low odds of survival to a pulp.
Alongside Ripplestar is Dapplefeather. The two grew up as friends, though the latter she-cat was significantly younger. Dapplefeather looked up to the (now) Ripplestar as not only a friend, but almost as if she were a second mentor - copying her every phrase and movement.
Now, in these trying times, both she-cats will be tested.
And it's hard to tell if both will make it out.

- clan roles -
leader: 30+ moons. CypressClan's leader watches over and takes care of their clan. Though they share authority with their deputy (and the relationship between the two should be very close), the leader's decision is always the final one. This is a role that many strive to do well in - not wanting their generation to relive the end Cypressstar's rule.
deputy: 20+ moons (has to have mentored/be currently mentoring at least one cat).
