Spoilers for Squirrelflight's Hope. Tree being kind of anti-Clan or at least anti always following Clan tradition and Clan paths and ways 100% makes a lot more sense now after reading Squirrelflight's Hope. Considering his feelings regarding being raised in The Sisters and being made to leave due to their tradition and ways and the difference with how they viewed what toms need and she-cats need, etc. it makes a lot of sense why he would want to challenge it when he could or at least didn't feel comfortable with following tradition blindly.
At first when we see him, at least I, thought he just didn't really respect Clan tradition and didn't get it and was kind of lazy, etc. and while I still don't necessarily like him as a character (I don't hate him, either, he's just meh) I really like that they developed a bit more on why he thinks the way he thinks.

I thought it was pretty interesting because from learning about the Sisters it's like a lot of things clicked into place for why Tree was initially the way he was and why he thought the way he did. It's pretty nice to see that side of his character. I also don't blame him for not having the best relationship with his former family either...
