Salmonstar » A soft breeze carried the scent of coming rain through camp. That was the only sign of a coming shower so far as currently the skies were clear as warm rays of sun crisscrossed into the camp. The morning was coming in gently, yet with the promise of a coming rain for later the Clan couldn’t daddle around. Even if the morning seemed like the perfect lazy one, Clan life had to go on as it always had.
This was something even the rather new leader knew as she slipped out of her nest and into the heart of camp to greet the morning. She stopped to glance over her shoulder, taking a moment to wonder if Lightflame had followed her out or if he remained asleep. Ever since becoming leader she had opened her den to her mate, and even their two children, to sleep in if they wished. Salmonstar had never expected the leader’s den to be as lonely as it was, not after she had been so used to sharing a den with all the other warriors. Having her family join her in the leader’s den really helped, and she wasn’t beyond admitting that she still needed more time to adjust to her new role.
Becoming leader had been...difficult for her. Salmonstar hadn’t exactly expected to ever become leader even after she had been named deputy seasons ago despite the leader before her, Hawkstar, being rather old. She had been the oldest cat in the Clan before her passing, and even Sandtrout had no problem reminding any cat that he had been the tortoiseshell leader’s first apprentice back in the day. Salmonstar hadn’t expected to die before Hawkstar, but she had half expected for the elder molly to have named a new deputy, a cat that would fit the job better. Not that Salmonstar had been a bad deputy or a terrible leader figure, no, it was just that she had always had different plans for her life path. She had always thought she’d be a loyal warrior to her Clan while throughout her career she’d mother a few litters of kits here and there. That had been what she had expected of her life, yet that didn’t happen and the role of leader had been thrust upon her after Hawkstar’s passing.
Having not expected to be leader, Salmonstar had then made a stupid choice that, in the end, made it even harder for her to adjust to her status as leader. Well, she wouldn’t say having her kits had been a stupid choice, having her kits had been the best decision she had made, but the timing of it all hadn’t worked out. Salmonstar had expected Hawkstar to continue on living for a few more seasons yet, so she had thought it safe for her and Lightflame to start a family. She had handled being a pregnant queen while also being deputy rather well, but it had all been a hassle when Hawkstar passed away in her sleep the night right before Salmonstar had gone into labor. It had been more than hard, mourning Hawkstar, becoming leader, receiving her name and lives, and then having her kits all within the same night and day. She had to then adjust to being a mother, which Salmonstar believed she did a rather well job of that, along with being the new leader of a Clan who had just lost a leader that had reigned for as long as most of the Clan could remember. Now, a little over two seasons later, Salmonstar was getting the hang of the leader thing, but she still stumbled here and there. She wasn’t a terrible leader, but she knew she would never be able to fit in Hawkstar’s pawsteps.
Shaking these thoughts away from her mind, Salmonstar made her way over to a small group of warriors that were gathering near the fresh-kill pile. As the dilute calico stepped closer, she could pick up the voice of Pelicanthroat as he pawed through the carcasses of last night’s hunts. ”The Clan better get to hunting, what we have left is almost too stiff to want to eat.”
The gruff voice of Stormrush then piped in. ”Some cat should eat it, it’d be foolish of us to let prey go to waste, even in Green-leaf.” That was when the senior warrior then turned to the third cat at the fresh-kill pile, his son Clamtooth. ”Here,” he muttered as he leaned down and picked up a rather large squirrel. ”Take this to Dandeliontail and Sandtrout. Once you’re back the morning patrols should be ready to go out.”
Clamtooth didn’t seem to have the incentive to argue that his father was giving him a typical apprentice’s job. Instead, the silver tabby picked the squirrel up and padded toward the elders’ den. Salmonstar watched as the tom slipped inside before she took the last few pawsteps to clear the distance between her, Stormrush, and Pelicanthroat.
”Morning, Stormrush, Pelicanthroat,” the tri-colored molly greeted the two toms with a respectful dip of her head.
In unison the two toms returned the greeting. After they had said their good mornings, Salmonstar offered a small smile in hopes of picking up a light conversation. ”Sending Clamtooth to do the apprentices’ job?” She asked, eyeing Stormrush with a warmth in her green gaze.
The dark furred tom gave a shrug as his first response. ”I suppose I am, but feeding the elders never hurt a warrior. Besides, I think Clamtooth enjoys spending time with them, even Dandeliontail.” While both elders were respected within the Clan for the service they had given, it wasn’t hidden knowledge that Dandeliontail was usually the elder cats wanted to stay away from. She wasn’t as...pleasant as Sandtrout, to put it lightly. Even still, if Clamtooth enjoyed being in their presence then who was to complain or make a fuss of it?
Before a response could be made to Stormrush’s words, movement caught Salmonstar’s eye. She turned to spot the ginger and white fur of Weaselpaw as he, seemingly, tried to sneak his way back into camp. This immediately made the leader curious, wondering where the young tom had gone off to if he was returning to camp. His thick fur seemed ruffled and unkempt, like he hadn’t groomed it after a long run through the thickest parts of the forest.
Pelicanthroat must have spotted the apprentice as well for the brown and white tabby let out a faint growl from the back of his throat. Salmonstar was put at an uneasy stance as she looked from apprentice to warrior. Despite being father and son, she knew they had a rather rocky relationship, and while a part of her wanted to step in and do something, she knew she could only do so much. Maybe at some point she would suggest taking Pelicanthroat out to talk with him about everything and then eventually do the same with Weaselpaw. If there was one thing she could try to do it was make Clan relations better.
Even though the thoughts still lingered in the back of her mind, Salmonstar attempted to put something else at the forefront of her mind. She was content with staying here with the two warriors for now. It wouldn’t be long before Shadowcaster made the morning patrols and Salmonstar was curious to see who was assigned to what duty this morning. Perhaps she’d even do some hunting or patrolling herself; it had been a while since she had last gone out of camp as she was usually left to stay and keep watch while warriors went about their duties. Salmonstar still had her own job here in the camp, but even she couldn’t stand being cooped inside constantly.

Shadowcaster » Stretching, Shadowcaster stood up from the perch she had discovered hidden among the cliff walls that helps encase the camp alongside the forest on the other side. It was a good place to watch over the camp while the clan slept, Shadowcaster had never needed a lot of sleep, allowing for her to be up for most of the night and day without tiring, which...she had to admit, she enjoyed far too much; there was just something about how quiet and still the camp got at night, how silent it became and how the only company she had to worry about was her own. The night was truly when she felt at peace.
Noticing Salmonstar exit her den, Shadowcaster jumped down from her perch to greet her leader - and friend - by the fresh kill pile. ”Morning Salmonstar, sleep well?” the deputy questioned as she curled her tail around her paws and surveyed the camp, watching as warriors made their way out of their den and apprentices followed.
Batpaw especially caught her attention. Her son was small, and barely old enough to be an apprentice - though, he had only became one yesterday - and it still...worried her, that he might not adjust well to being away from her, especially at night. For the past six moons Shadowcaster had given up her nightly routine of watching over the camp from above to tend to her young, exceedingly small kit, it had been hard, on both of them, to change their routine.
However as the young apprentice bounded out of the apprentice den with a bounce to his step, some of Shadowcaster’s worried subsided. He seemed to be doing just fine.
However...that’s when another apprentice caught her attention.
Weaselpaw, slipping back into camp. He must’ve snuck out right under her nose - or during the few hours that she actually did sleep - and had only now found his way back. That was...intriguing to say the least, however Shadowcaster wasn’t about to interrogate him on it.
No, she’d let Batpaw do that instead. He had a certain set of skills that made it hard to keep anything from him.
Turning her attention back to Salmonstar, Shadowcaster continued. ”I was thinking of sending out a hunting patrol soon, as well as the morning patrol, is Lightflame up yet? I was hoping he would lead the morning patrol today,” she explained and glanced over towards the leader’s den.
As if on cue, a large, golden ginger cat walked out of the leader’s den and for a split second, Shadowcaster thought it was Lightflame.
That’s when she recognized the kit like fluff and youthful appearance and realized it was Sunpaw, not his father.
Following Sunpaw, came his sister as the two of them quietly murmured to each other, talking in voices far too quiet for Shadowcaster to hear.
Then came Lightflame, the older tom quickly spotting Salmonstar and Shadowcaster and bounding over with a purr rumbling in his chest. ”It’s a nice morning today, isn’t it?” He asked as he walked over to them, stretching out is back legs as he gave his mane of a coat a good shake, fur sticking up everywhere from the lack of morning grooming.
Though then again, Lightflame always looked like he hadn’t groomed on seasons, so this wasn’t really that different than the mornings that he actually did bother to groom himself.

Salmonstar » Without missing a beat a purr rumbled from the back of Salmonstar's throat the moment she noticed her deputy and best friend walking over after having jumped down from her nightly perch. The leader offered a quick nudge of welcome to Shadowcaster as the lean, black molly made her presence known to the group that had already gathered at the fresh-kill pile. "Slept as well as a hibernating bear," she responded with a twinge of humor in her voice. "I'd ask how your sleep went, but I don't think you ever sleep." Humor was still laced in her words, but the leader wasn't far from the truth. Shadowcaster seemed to always be awake with the night. It was something Salmonstar herself couldn't do - she needed a good bit of sleep throughout the night to function the next day.
She took a moment of silence as she noticed Stormrush get up to his paws and pad over closer to Shadowcaster, the older warrior pressing his nose against Shadowcaster's ear in a friendly greeting. He soon stepped away yet he kept his gaze on his daughter for a moment longer. "Need me on any patrols this morning?"
Salmonstar remained silent a moment longer as she allowed father and daughter to greet one another. As she did, she scanned her gaze across camp once more, taking in the sights of everything going on. Once more did she spot Weaselpaw, the young tom heading toward the apprentices' den with his head lowered and tail nearly dragging on the ground. Concern flared in the molly's stomach at the sight of the young apprentice. Her concerns were soon traded out by a feeling of amusement when she spotted Batpaw bouncing straight out of the den Weaselpaw was headed toward. "Must feel nice to finally be out of the nursery," Salmonstar meowed as she turned her attention back to Shadowcaster with whiskers twitching. Just yesterday she had made her friend's son an apprentice, and while Salmonstar had picked up on some concern from her friend, she was sure the Clan's newest apprentice would do fine.
As her mate was brought up, Salmonstar looked over at her den, wondering if the fluffy tomcat had woken up after she had left. "I'm not s-" She cut her sentence off short when she noticed, one by one, her family coming out of the den, another purr catching in her throat as she watched Sunpaw, then Moonpaw, and then Lightflame.
"A very good morning," the leader responded warmly as she leaned forward to give Lightflame a quick nuzzle against his cheek. "But I can smell that rain's on the way, the day might not stay this nice," she warned. Hopefully the rain that was rolling in would only be a light drizzle. The Clan could still hunt and patrol in the rain, but a storm would halt most, if not all, duties for the day if it got bad enough.

Shadowcaster » Letting out a small, bemused chuff of breath, Shadowcaster’s whiskers twitched in amusement. ”I sleep as much as I need to,” she replied simply, which was true, she got plenty of sleep, she just needed less sleep than the average cat.
As Stormrush spoke up, Shadowcaster looked over at her father, purring in greetings as she gently nuzzled him with the top of her head. ”I still need someone to lead the hunting patrol, you could take Bluefeather, Rippleflower, and Skunkpaw,” Shadowcaster suggested as she took a small step back from her father.
Hunting would need to be done as early as possible today, with the rain coming in later, Shadowcaster wanted enough food to last the clan before the storm hit, which actually, they’d need a place to put the prey so it wouldn’t get wet and soggy, nothing was worse than a wet mouse for dinner. ”On second thought, leave Bluefeather here, I have a better task for him, take Sunpaw instead,” she advised, glancing quickly over at the young apprentice in question.
Sunpaw was still in his original spot below the leader’s den, talking to his sister and grooming himself. He was a good hunter for how young he was, it would be good to send him out there and get the experience.
Watching as Lightflame made his way over to them, she nodded respectfully to the leader’s mate, flicking her tail in agreement about the weather. ”It’s nice right now, but like Salmonstar said, it won’t stay this way,” she agreed with EdgeClan’s leader. ”Which is why I think it would be best to send a morning patrol out as soon as possible, would you mind leading it, Lightflame? You can take Pelicanthroat, Batpaw, Pounceleap, and Weaselpaw.” One of the perks of staying up throughout most of the night was that it left Shadowcaster plenty of time to think about patrols and who to send out, by now and had it down that sending patrols and hunting parties out was easy...which had not been so easy when she had first been made deputy.
Lightflame nodded in understanding, opening his mouth to respond when he was interrupted by Moonpaw. The young medicine cat apprentice had walked over to the talking adults just in time to hear everything about patrols. ”May I come too?” She questioned, head tilted to the side. ”We’re running low on fresh moss and poppy seeds, I thought I could pick some up on the way back,” she explained hurriedly, looking up at the leader and deputy with wide, big green eyes.
Shadowcaster shot a look towards Salmonstar, silently asking for her opinion on this. She flicked her ears, turning her narrow head back towards Moonpaw. ”If you clear it with Pebblepool, I don’t see why not,” she said tentatively, sending another quick look towards Salmonstar to make sure what she had said was alright with the leader. She didn’t want to take control of everything when Salmonstar was right there and had much more of a say on what went on in EdgeClan than Shadowcaster did.

Salmonstar » Salmonstar couldn't argue with her friend there as she had a point. The leader couldn't recall a time where Shadowcaster had fallen prey to a lack of sleep. Besides, the deputy knew what she was doing and knew her limits and how much sleep she needed, it wasn't Salmonstar's job to change Shadowcaster's habits when they weren't exactly unhealthy for her in the first place.
She listened to Shadowcaster as she gave her orders to Stormrush, the tom nodding in understanding as Shadowcaster then quickly changed her mind about sending out Bluefeather and swapping him with Sunpaw. "Sounds good," he mewed with a nod of his head before padding off to more than likely gather the three cats mentioned for his patrol. It wasn't long after that when Salmonstar noticed Pelicanthroat, who was still nearby, look up and over when his name was mentioned. The brown and white tabby got to his paws and stretched out his back before giving a nod to show he had heard he was needed for a second patrol.
It wasn't until Salmonstar noticed her daughter coming over that she spoke up again. "Morning, Moonpaw," she greeted with a warm smile, happy to see her daughter awake and ready to start the day. She listened as her daughter went on to ask about joining a patrol for the sake of gathering more supplies for the medicine cat den. For a moment there Salmonstar felt a pang of guilt run through her as she looked at Moonpaw. She knew the medicine cat apprentice hadn't exactly wanted to go down the path of healing and prophecy, yet StarClan had seemed adamant on making her a medicine cat instead of a warrior. Moonpaw should be out learning battle moves and how to hunt alongside her brother, but could Salmonstar, even as leader, defy the wishes of their ancestors? Besides, Pebblepool knew what she was doing when she had picked out Moonpaw as an apprentice, and there was no way Salmonstar would go against the medicine cat, either.
Feeling a cat's flickering gaze on her, Salmonstar shook herself free of those thoughts. She then gave a quick nod, agreeing with what Shadowcaster had said. "If Pebblepool is okay with it, then there's no reason to not let you go." Salmonstar didn't see why Pebblepool would deny Moonpaw a chance to go on a patrol to gather the poppy seeds and moss, but could any cat really predict what the medicine cat would and wouldn't allow? If anything, asking her wouldn't hurt.

Moonpaw » Moonpaw rubbed her eyes with her paw, shutting them closed tightly as they stung. She would’ve liked to claim that she had slept well last night, however “sleeping well” for Moonpaw had never been something she had experienced. Her dreams - if you could call them that - were never what Sunpaw had described his dreams to be like to her. They weren’t full of dandelion fields and chasing mice up trees and randomly taking flight through the air like a bird. Her dreams had always left her restless in the morning, no matter what she did while asleep.
Still, that wasn’t something she could let bother her and as she arose from another restless night, she pulled herself to her feet, looking down at her sleeping littermate resting beside her. Neither of them technically should be sleeping in the leader’s den, as they already had places to go and rest, such as the apprentice’s den or the medicine cat’s den, but Salmonstar had invited them in and something about sleeping in the cozy den surrounded by family made sleeping just a little bit easier on her.
Smiling slightly, Moonpaw nudged her brother away. ”Come on Sunpaw, we have things to do today,” she urged him awake, looking around the den as her brother slowly began to stir.
Salmonstar wasn’t in there, which meant her mother must’ve already awoken, however Lightflame was still inside the den, sitting in front of them with a welcoming, warm purr emitting from him. ”Good morning sleepy heads, sleep well?” her father asked in that cheery, sing song way of his.
Moonpaw grunted in response, looking away from Lightflame.
Now, there was one thing she felt the need to make absolutely clear here, Moonpaw adored and loved her father, she really did, however his “happy to rise and shine” attitude so early in the morning had a way of tickling her the wrong way, especially since she had never been nearly as fond of mornings as he seemed to be.
It was almost enough to consider sleeping in the medicine cat’s den again. She had a nest there and everything.
...But then it made the fact that she actually, really was the medicine cat apprentice all the more real and Moonpaw wasn’t sure she was quite ready for that step.
”Oh come on Moonpaw, its a beautiful day, don’t let your morning grumpiness ruin it for you,” Lightflame continued, never once losing any cheer to his voice as he padded behind the two apprentices and nudged Sunpaw up to his feet.
Her brother groaned in response, trying to dig himself even further into the nest. ”Noooo, just until the sun hits the den a little more,” Sunpaw whined in his typical, sleepy morning voice as he tried to make himself as big and sturdy as possible.
However, unfortunately for Sunpaw, Lightflame was bigger and sturdier and within a few more seconds he had Sunpaw reluctantly up to his feet. ”Come on, your mother’s already outside waiting for us, its time to get up,” Lightflame continued on, flicking his long, fluffy tail towards the den entrance.
Sunpaw and Moonpaw shared a look and Moonpaw swore she could just about feel the exact same nerve tickling she had felt earlier radiating off of her brother. She giggled softly under her breath as he made a face, moving his paw around as if to silently mimic their father. He never said anything, but Moonpaw knew what he meant anyways.
”Come on, you can help me check on the herb stocks,” Moonpaw suggested as she padded out of the den right alongside Sunpaw, Lightflame following behind them. ”I think we’re running low on a few things but I’m not sure what,” she continued, making a face as she thought back to last night, right before she had left the medicine cat’s den in favor of the den the rest of her family was in. She had checked on the herbs before bed, knowing that some of them would need restocking before long. ”I think poppy seeds is one of the things we need,” she continued as she sat outside the den, tail neatly curled over her paws.
Poppy seeds. That was one she could remember, especially since over the last couple of nights she had snuck a few of them to eat before nightfall, hoping it would make her nights easier for her.
They helped a little.
Or at least, they helped get her to sleep, but not even poppy seeds could help her after that point.
Sunpaw nodded along absentmindedly. ”Yeah yeah, those are the ones that look like mouse droppings, right?” He asked and as soon as he finished, Moonpaw reached a paw up and whacked the back of his head. Sunpaw inhaled sharply at the impact, flicking his ears as he glared over at his sister. ”First of all, owe, watch the claws why dont you?” He asked in a grumble. ”Second, what was that for? It’s the truth.”
Well, he wasn’t exactly wrong.
Even still, Moonpaw did not need that image in her head, now every time she used a few of those to sleep at night, all she’d be able to imagine is that she’s eating a pile of mouse droppings and she really didn’t need to picture that. ”I’m never going to be able to see poppy seeds the same way ever again now, I hope you realize that,” she lectured him through slanted eyes.
Sunpaw paused for a moment and Moonpaw eyed him warily, taking to note the giddy glee coming from his brother in waves. She knew what this meant, he was about to say something incredibly stupid, wasn’t he?
That’s when Sunpaw grinned and - holding back his own laughter - proceeded to ask: “Dont you mean...poopy seeds?” He questioned in a hushed whisper before instantly bursting into laughter at his own joke.
Yep, there it was, the inevitable stupid joke Sunpaw was bound to say.
Moonpaw resisting laughing along - she had somewhat of a reputation to keep, she didn’t need to be known as that kit like apprentice that laughed at poopy seeds. So instead, she held in her laughter and rolled her eyes in response. ”You’re lucky I don’t whack you again for that,” she teased as she glared at him.
Sunpaw smirked in response, nudging Moonpaw in the shoulder. ”Oh come on, you know I’m hilarious,” he told her, still laughing a little from his immature joke.
Moonpaw rolled her eyes again, looking over the camp until her eyes landed on her parents and a couple other warriors standing around the fresh kill pile, talking about patrols.
Thats when she remembered what else they were running low on.
Moss.
It was kind of a random thing to remember but thats how memory worked, wasn’t it?
”I’ll be right back,” she told her littermate as she stood up and started over towards the older cats just in time to hear Shadowcaster mention the morning patrol. ”May I come too? We’re running low on fresh moss and poppy seeds,” she explained, head tilted to the side. ”I thought I could pick some up on the way back.” Plus it would give her a chance to get out of camp for awhile, and more importantly: away from the medicine cat’s den a little longer.
Shadowcaster looked over at Salmonstar for a second before responding. ”If you clear it with Pebblepool, I don’t see why not,” she decided, looking back to Salmonstar one more time, as if waiting for confirmation from the leader as well.
Which Salmonstar gave and as soon as she did, Moonpaw smiled in response and nodded. ”Right, I’ll go talk to Pebblepool,” she agreed and immediately turned towards the medicine cat’s den, walking inside.
She paused as soon as she entered the den, closing her eyes for a second as she forced herself further inside. She had to get used to the den, she would be spending a lot more time in here than she would anywhere else, it was time she realized that and stopped being so hesitant to enter.
Letting out a small, shaky breath, Moonpaw spoke up, voice echoing ever so slightly through the drafty den. ”Pebblepool? Are you in here? I wanted to ask you something,” she called out, looking around for any signs of the medicine cat in question.

Pebblepool » She had been left alone in her den for the night again. It didn't surprise her, and she didn't mind it, but she had entertained the idea of having another actual living being in her den with her when she had first picked Moonpaw out as an apprentice. She had been excited, she had, to share her world with another living creature, but things had not gone exactly to plan. Pebblepool had a sense that things would not go exactly to plan with Moonpaw and picking her to be the next medicine cat of EdgeClan, but she had hoped. She had hoped and she had been much too hopeful. But things would turn around. All in good time things would turn around and she would have an apprentice that she could consider a friend. Surely Moonpaw would learn to adjust to her position as medicine cat. That was what the stars had wanted, and Pebblepool could never go against the word of the stars. They knew what they were doing. They knew that eventually everything would be right and everything would be okay in the end. Pebblepool had never been steered in the wrong direction by her ancestors. With that thought in mind the gray-silver molly relaxed ever so slightly. All things would be right in the end.
She had yet to leave her den for the day. The thought ran through her mind at a slug's pace, slow and even perhaps groggy, like she was still in a sleepy haze. Yet she wasn't. She was wide awake and probably had been since before the first morning bird could sing its song. But instead of getting out of her nest and taking a stroll through camp in the darkness before dawn, she had stayed in her nest. There she had allowed her thoughts about Moonpaw wash over her. Did she feel guilty about stripping potential warrior status from the dilute tabico? No. She didn't feel guilty because she knew it had to be done, and there was no point in feeling guilt about something that was to happen no matter what. Maybe a small part of her did feel bad, but not exactly guilty. She wanted Moonpaw to want the position of medicine cat apprentice, but that didn't seem to be happening. At least not for now.
Pebblepool shook her head and let out a breath of air. No. Now wasn't the time for these thoughts again. She needed to busy herself before she let herself fall into the ever tumbling darkness that was her thoughts on such matters. She had no time to feel bad. This was destiny she was playing with, and she couldn't feel guilty about the path StarClan had placed another on.
Deciding what to busy herself with, Pebblepool slipped into the very back of her den to where she had a decent stash of juniper berries stored. With a gentle paw she reached out and rolled one of the berries underneath her pawpad, watching with intense eyes as the berry rolled and rolled and rolled under her.
"When was the last time you ate?"
The voice barely registered to Pebblepool. She kept rolling the berry. It was soothing underneath her paw, rhythmic and predictable.
"Must I eat? I find sustenance beyond the mice that run in these woods," she answered after a moment.
The juniper berry continued to roll.
"It was four sunrises ago."
"Hmm." Pebblepool twitched the tip of her tail. "I do not feel hunger." Right now all she felt was the juniper berry rolling...rolling...rolling.
A pause. And then, "Do you feel anything else?"
Pebblepool stopped. She blinked. Lifted up her paw. Looked at the juniper berry.
And then, with ever still calmness, Pebblepool lifted up her paw and struck the berry with a force that splattered the poor thing all over the molly's paw.
"I feel Moonpaw," she murmured before getting up to her feet and calmly padded back out into the main area of her den. Her ears twitched and she stopped for a moment. "Moonpaw," she called out moments before she heard the apprentice walk inside the den and call for her.
As she glanced at the younger feline, Pebblepool tipped her head to the side, ears twitching as if the faintest of voices was tickling her ear fur. "I see no reason for you to not gather more moss and poppy. We are rather low," Pebblepool meowed nonchalantly, acting as if Moonpaw had already verbally asked her about going out on one of the patrols.

Moonpaw »
Things between Moonpaw and her mentor had been...strained, to say the least, since well...since she became medicine cat apprentice. Pebblepool was fine...maybe a little strange; that wasn’t the problem here though, Moonpaw knew strange. It was more of...well, Moonpaw hadn’t exactly wanted to be a medicine cat and yet here she was, on her way to becoming one.
Breathing out, Moonpaw padded further into the den, light from outside growing smaller in size the deeper inside the den she went, the cold surface brushing up against the pads of her feet. The medicine cat’s den had always been chilly to Moonpaw, there was this natural coolness to the air inside the den that made it feel as if walking into walking into the night sky.
Calling out for her mentor, Moonpaw’s eyes scanned over the den, and even though she was on the look out for Pebblepool, she still couldn’t help but get surprised at the sudden appearance of the clan’s medicine cat.
She backed up slightly, fur standing on end for a few moments, however Moonpaw pushed past that, forcing her fur to fall flat against her body as she looked up at the gray cat. ”Pebblepool, I-“ before she could even begin to ask for permission to join the hunting patrol in search of herbs, her mentor had already responded, confirming that she could go.
Which was good news of course, it was just...
Moonpaw made a face, looking up at Pebblepool. She had always had this...way of knowing things that Moonpaw didn’t plan on letting her know well before Moonpaw would’ve even had the chance to explain. Honestly by now Moonpaw was pretty sure Pebblepool was some sort of omnipresent ghost cat that no one had caught on to yet.
Listen, as ridiculous as that sounded, Moonpaw was getting a lot of evidence together here that proved her theory right. Pebblepool hardly ate, - if she ate at all - the medicine cat’s den always had this vaguely chilly presence to it, no matter what Moonpaw did to try and fix it, and Pebblepool knew things that no mortal cat should know.
So in conclusion, Pebblepool was a strong contender for “spirit walking among the clan without the clan realizing it” and Moonpaw was sticking to her theory until proven otherwise.
Gulping back any nerves that had began to bubble up inside her throat, Moonpaw looked up at Pebblepool, eyes meeting hers. ”How did you...” as she began, Moonpaw quickly realized that was sort of a stupid question. Pebblepool just knew these sort of things, there was no point in asking.
So shaking her head, Moonpaw changed tactics. ”Alright, I’ll make sure to get a lot of moss and poopy-I mean poppy seeds-“ Dang it Sunpaw, now he was in her head, hopefully Pebblepool hadn’t noticed her slip up. ”Is there anything else I should grab while I’m out?” She questioned, padding at the ground a little as she avoided looking back up at Pebblepool.
Moonpaw couldn’t think of anything on the top of her head that they needed, but that didn’t always mean there wasn’t something more, after all she was still sort of new to this, she didn’t know all the herbs yet.

Pebblepool » The juniper berry's juice was starting to dry on her paw, causing her fur to grow stiff. It felt odd, but it certainly wasn't the first time Pebblepool had something grow cold on her paws. She was able to ignore the out of place altogether, especially now that she had Moonpaw in the den with her. This, along with the apprentice bringing back the supplies she had gathered, could perhaps be the only time Pebblepool would get to see Moonpaw today, and she wasn't going to let anything distract her from putting her full attention to her apprentice.
Something Pebblepool had grown used to over the seasons was the way cats reacted to her. She still found it rather amusing at times to see how a kit reacted to her the first time around, or how apprentices still reacted to her, but beyond the fresh responses of the young cats, Pebblepool was used to how she usually put a cat on edge. She had always been a little different from the other EdgeClan cats, and from the beginning she knew she was destined to be a medicine cat. It had been everything she had ever wanted. Not once had she had a thought of "I don't want to do this" run through her mind. As soon as coherent thoughts had filled her mind she had wanted to be a medicine cat. She had been lucky and the medicine cat before her, Stagleaf, had taken her on as his apprentice. She had been a fast learner, picking up on medicine quicker than a warrior could learn how to perfect the hunters' crouch. Communicating with StarClan had been even easier for her. Her bond with the starry cats had been strong from the beginning, and over time it had only gotten stronger. Now she felt connected to the stars at every moment whether that be a waking or a sleeping moment. They were always with her, and that at least kept her from ever truly feeling lonely.
For just a second there was a sound of amusement from the medicine cat. The ghost of a smile pulled at her lips as her green eyes lit up with laughter. Poopy seeds. Now that was certainly something. She didn't say anything verbally about it, though. She didn't want to risk Moonpaw disliking her even more than she perhaps already did. Instead she focused on the other parts of what the dilute tabico had said.
Without there being any hesitation in her words, Pebblepool replied, "Could you find some rosemary and bring it back? We'll be needing it." She didn't go into anything specific about its uses, at least not yet. She would do that once Moonpaw returned if Moonpaw was open to learning. Instead, the silver-gray feline turned and padded over to a small nook in the wall of the den. She fished a paw inside before dragging a spiky looking plant out with a claw. "It resembles a pine needle, but instead of being on a tree, it grows directly from the ground like a bush," the medicine cat explained as she turned back around to show the sprig of rosemary to Moonpaw.
Pebblepool was about to let Moonpaw go when the most important thought crossed her mind. She had known about this earlier, and had told herself to not let Moonpaw go until she had heard the words. So, remembering what she had been meaning to say, Pebblepool cast a deep look toward her apprentice. "When the big cat comes, don't blame yourself. What happens is what needs to happen." Then, as if she hadn't just said something cryptic, she gestured with her tail for Moonpaw to be on her way. "Don't leave the patrol waiting. I'll be here when you return."
