[ so i could either...
A: write a tragic backstory for Zach rn(the other charries wouldn't know, but y'all would) or... B: let the characters and the audience piece things together as the story progresses ]]

Zander steps back into the castle and rolled his shoulders back. He was trying to figure out what he needed to do next. For now, he would ask about the king and queen's condition later. For now, he decided to just wander a bit until he was needed. Zander was still reeling from what happened earlier. He had always planned how this would go down but seeing it was way better than he had ever anticipated. Best part is no one would ever suspect him. He made absolutely sure to be kind to the royals and has proved his loyalty many times over.
(Zander starts singing loudly about his plan unaware that people can hear him and the music. )

I’m sure this comes to a shock to nobody (since it’s in my siggie and because I’m a total nerd) but I’m a Ravenclaw through and through Ah don’t worry Sparky take all the time you need there’s no pressure x your writing is amazing, it’s worth waiting for In the meantime I may do some writing for Eldred but I don’t know whether to cover the stuff with his wife or his illness)

True true boars are pretty vicious you don’t mess with them. But also I have no idea what about me is even slightly linked with a boar XD I like voles though they’re very cute. And a small patronus taking down dementors seems so much more badass cos it’s small but powerful like that’s some concentrated magic right there)

It was a week before the gala, and Eldred had made some excuse and travelled to a village not too far from the palace, where he was consulting a doctor he knew. He could have been seen by Drusilla but he had a number of reasons for not doing so; firstly, he was private and preferred to keep his business out of palace walls, where gossip of his illness would spread like wildfire. Secondly, he knew Drusilla’s father and if his daughter told him Eldred was ill he’d only worry.
So he sat on a chair, across the table from a physician who looked rather grave. He kept preparing to say something and then losing his nerve at the last moment. Eldred rolled his eyes lightly.
“Look, I just came here for confirmation of what I already knew,” the old man said “so let me make your job a little easier, since you can’t seem to spit it out. It’s consumption, isn’t it?”
“Tuberculosis, yes,” the doctor replied with a nod
“And there isn’t anything you can do, I suppose. No experimental treatment you happen to have been working on?” Eldred asked. He already knew the answer but he had to ask.
The doctor shook his head.
“I’m afraid, sir, that all I can offer you are treatments to help ease the pain.”
“Very well,” Eldred nodded “how long do I have, then?”
“Well,” the doctor stammered “well, it’s different for every- everybody. It could be weeks, it could be months. I’d recommend you set your affairs in order and-“
“Oh, my affairs?” Eldred asked “I have no affairs of my own, it’s the kingdom’s affairs I must set to rights. My main concern is ensuring that in my absence the kingdom isn’t overcome by the forces of stupidity. Now, you really can’t tell me how long?”
“I really can’t, my apologies,” the doctor said “but if I had to guess I would say you have a few months left.”
“Right,” Eldred responded “so basically all you have done is tell me what I already knew, and then say there is nothing you can offer to treat it and that you don’t know how long I have? You’ve been almost entirely useless.”
Eldred knew the course of tuberculosis. He had a bad cough and would soon begin to cough up blood. He would go pale, and lose weight as the illness began to spread to other organs. Abdominal pain, loss of appetite. Until eventually either his organs completely shut down and killed him or else haemorrhaging in his lungs caused his death. Neither was a good way to go.
He was just numb as he bid farewell to the doctor and began his short journey back to the palace. He kept to his room mostly for the following week, and he had intended to stay there for as long as possible. He didn’t want to infect anyone else if possible, and if he stayed in his room fewer people would see the decline in his health that was to come.
Keeping this private would only work for so long, but he’d savour every moment of peace and quiet before the rest of the palace found out and started fussing over him. He would search for a replacement in secret, and then when the time came recommend some suitable new advisors to the king and queen.
This all had to be planned carefully if his death and the taking over of his role was to happen smoothly.

(( Hi guys! I should be able to get stuff up tomorrow. Whoo, a fellow Ravenclaw! It's my favorite house, with Hufflepuff as my second. Oh poor Eldred! )) Take all the time you need! Haha Hufflepuff is my second favourite too! Yeah x I will do a wife thing for him soon I think. But with the last post I operated under the assumption of Drusilla not knowing but if you would like Drusilla to know he’s ill I’m happy to redo it. He can swear her to secrecy before they set off on their little quest but she could secretly try to make sure he doesn’t make himself worse etc etc on the trip. Either way is fine by me it depends on whether you want her to know)

Eldred was in his late twenties, and his wife meant everything to him. Helena was beautiful, with black hair like the night sky and eyes the soft grey of morning. She liked to run barefoot through the woods, or take strolls in the rain. And Eldred had once liked that kind of thing too, love and adventure and laughter.
But right now they were in an argument, Helena’s grey eyes turned hard and icy. Eldred had told her of his intention to work at the palace, in the hopes of becoming the royal advisor.
”I can’t let you, Eldred!” she insisted “they’ll find out about your powers and you’ll be killed.”
”You don’t understand!” Eldred shouted
”And what don’t I understand?”
”That I...” he began, pausing to collect himself “That I can’t live in a world where I can’t be who I am, Helena.”
“Aren’t I enough?” Helena said with a sigh “I love you.”
“I love you too, but don’t you think that since you love me you should let me take this chance?”
“I can’t lose you. I won’t let you go!”
“Well maybe that isn’t your decision to make!”
With those words Eldred had turned away from his wife, his back to her. He couldn’t look at her right now.
“Eldred, stop it! You can’t!”
“Try and stop me!”
But that shout was where everything went wrong. With those words Eldred had whirled around to look at her, and a burst of magic, a wave of energy, had flown out of him and threw Helena back, her body hitting the wall behind her.
Eldred ran to her but it was already too late. He just knelt beside her and wept. The gift he had spent such a long time trying to make the best of, he was coming to realise that it was dangerous. That he had been a fool to think that such power could be safely used without learning how to properly control and contain it. It was something to be taken seriously.
And that was why for the rest of his life, Eldred had dedicated much of his free time to learning to control his power as well as cultivate it. And perhaps why he closed himself off so much. He couldn’t hurt anyone else.
