Please give me your thoughts! This is supposed to take place between SoD and APD.
It had been a few days since the Storm of Dogs. Bella stretched before itching her ear with her hindpaw. She then got up and shook out the frost in her fur. “Burr!” she barked and headed out of the hunter’s den. The golden dog looked around and ignored the hunger in her belly. After all, there wasn’t much left in the prey pile. She thought back to the time when she was a Leashed Dog and never went a no-sun without food in her belly, but it was different now, she was a wild dog and she wanted to prove that with all her heart.
She saw Lucky, her litter-brother, pad out of the den behind Sweet. Inwardly, Bella cringed. Out of all the dogs in the Wild Pack, he had to choose her as his mate? She and Sweet had never really gotten along and though Bella respected her well enough, she couldn’t help but think how Sweet and the former Alpha went at it on Lucky and exiled him afterwards.
Who are you to think she’s a bad dog?
It always snuck up on her without her wanting it to because whenever she recalled the past, it forced her to think about how she forced Lucky into being a spy for the Wild Pack as she was forming a plan to attack the Wild Pack with foxes. It had backfired on her and lead to the deaths of two dogs, one of them being a pup.
If Sweet was a bad dog, then what was she?
“Hey Bella!”
Bella snapped out of her train of thought when Lucky called out her name. “Yes Luck--Beta?” she corrected herself quickly.
“I need you to lead a hunting patrol.” he barked, giving her a friendly lick on the ear.
“Of course, Beta,” replied Bella.
Lucky turned away and Bella wondered who she should take. Snap was off on a hunting patrol of her own so there was less dogs than she would’ve liked. It was really the luck of the Spirit Dogs, thought Bella, that we got those huge rabbits after the Storm of Dogs. She was surprised to see Mickey was still in the camp. She thought that he would’ve gone with Snap. She hadn’t talked to him for a while, which was a shame because they were old friends. She had known him for a long time. He was talking to Bruno. It’s starting to feel like the old days.
“Hey Mickey! Bruno!” she called. “Would you like to go hunting?”
The two turned and their tails started wagging at the sight of her. “Of course, Bella!” they replied.
Before they got to the entrance, Bella saw Arrow, the black-and-tan Fierce Dog in the corner of her vision. He was sitting there, alone, looking lost and not sure as to what he should be doing.
Bella knew that feeling. When she was the Alpha of the Leashed Pack, she had doubted herself a lot, but in the end, she still made bad decisions.
“Arrow!” she barked.
She heard a low growl forming in Bruno’s throat and she bumped him with her shoulder. “Be nice!” she said quietly as she looked back at Arrow who was staring at the three of them.
“You’re welcome to join us,” she continued.
Arrow slowly got up, hesitant as he glanced at Bruno who no longer growled, but now glared at the Fierce Dog. Way to show gratitude to the dog who saved our hides! thought Bella.
The four of them padded out of the camp and towards the Endless Lake. While other dogs minded the strong smell of salt, Bella enjoyed it and she knew Martha would’ve too if she was still alive. Thinking about her dead friend caused Bella to fill up with sadness, so she shook her head and thought about something else.
The Endless Lake was in sight, but it was far enough, as to not distract any scent trails the dogs would pick up. Once again, hunger nipped at her belly. She rose her tail to stop the dogs in their tracks as she sniffed at the air, but there was nothing. She felt as though a heavy stone named disappointment was thrown at her.
She notioned with her head for the dogs to continue.
“I think I caught something!” said Arrow after a while of walking.
Excitement pricked at Bella as she took a sniff at the air. “I smell it!” she whispered.
Bruno rose his head to sniff the air. “I do too,” he huffed.
“It’s a deer!” exclaimed Mickey.
