In the books, it's never really clear exactly how the cats think about numbers. If I remember right, they seem to have some concept of discrete numbers, but it's not discussed much.
I remember in Watership Down, the author clearly sets parameters for the rabbits' conception of numbers: They can count to four, and anything above that is hrair, which if remember right simply means "thousands".
Personally, I like to imagine that, in a Warriors-type setting where the cats are anthropomorphized a bit, cats count using base eighteen, because they have eighteen claws. For example, twenty would be thought of as eighteen and two, or thirty-nine would be thought of as two eighteens and three. So this is limited, as they can't count higher than 324 (eighteen eighteens), but that should be more than enough for Clan purposes. And probably, some cats are likely to be far better at counting than others. I imagine most can count to eighteen, maybe two eighteens, but tend to struggle after that.
What about you guys? Do you have any headcanons as to how cats in a fictional setting might count?

hmm, in the books they seem to mostly just use human terms for numbers.

They use tail-lengths, fox-lengths, and tree-lengths to measure distance. But that's all that is ever covered.

While the cats can count in the series (they counted votes in the casting stones ceremony, for example), I doubt that they have developed positional number system. They'd more likely use an additive numeral system, with a rather low maximum value that is in their comprehension. For most things they just don't need big numbers - I'd say something around twenty is reasonable.

i'm guessing they can at least count to four since that's the highest amount of kits given to a queen in this series. and they have their own conversions with four half-moons is one moon, three moons is one season, four seasons is year round(they probably notice after four seasons the cycle starts again) stuff like that. it's probably higher but eh.

Maybe in a very primitive sense?
Like how many ancient societies would actually have a tally system of sorts, which indicated that a numeral system did exist, but wasn't as established as the decimal system the ancient Egyptians ended up establishing.
So, like, they know the numbers in their head, and they're able to communicate it, but (since they're cats), their system is very basic.

They have shown to have numbers before such as the scratches on Jayfeather's stick and the counting of stones when they were taking a vote. I'm assuming that all they can do is count. The highest number that has been said was five (as in the five clans), but since they can tally votes, they can probably count more than that. Maybe to thirty?
