I just finished reading this novella for the first time, so I was wondering what people's thoughts were on it?
Honestly, I don't like 'destined to be certainly bad' plotlines, so I really didn't like the dream where Pinestar was told to kill his infant son. It was much better when Doestar was saying earlier that Tigerkit could turn out evil, if not given the right guidance.

I liked the novella just fine, save for the Tigerkit thing. Although, considering Pinestar would've been really old at this time as well as being disillusioned with Clan life, it's possible it was just his mind playing tricks on him, at least in terms of the whole "kill your son" thing was concerned. After all, Doestar even warned him what would happen if Tigerkit wasn't raised right.
Or maybe it was the Dark Forest pretending to be StarClan in order to scare Pinestar into leaving.
Or, y'know, maybe StarClan really was being that stupid.

Especially since we didn't see what cats were saying that to him, whereas Doestar's much more reasonable warning had a familiar face and voice attached. Honestly, whenever a 'StarClan' prophecy endorses the harming or ostracisation of kits, I like to think it's the Dark Forest cats work instead.

I honestly liked it. It was interesting seeing a different "perspective", of a leader who is rather weary of clan life and frankly to a point just did what others expected him to.
The Starclan thing however drops it down for me, because the "destined to be evil" thing is such bullshit I wish Warriors could stop with that because there's such a lack of free will with destiny being abused like that. Doestar's warning was good enough, in that it meant Tigerkit wasn't SET on the good OR evil path but could fall into the latter if Pinestar was not careful in raising him. Not only that, but the Starclan pressure thing just drops my opinion on them even more.
Outside that though, mostly everything else is fine. I liked Pinestar's PoV, I liked Shanty, and Jake in this book is adorable as usual. Lots of people don't like Pinestar for choosing to be a kittypet but frankly I found his view very interesting (And even understandable because tbh clan life can suck lol).

Before I read this, I knew Pinestar had decided to be a kittypet, and I had always thought he was a coward who didn't want to lose his last life. However, after I learned that he left so he wouldn't have to kill his son, that made me like him A LOT more.

His novella was pretty cool. I thought of him as a coward before as well, but this made like him just a little bit.

Pretty good. Still don't love Pinestar, but I understood him better after reading it.

it was interesting. the "kill tigerkit" dream was disturbing, but admittedly i do wonder how different things had been if pinestar had done it after all I'm thinking the darkness might have manifested in another cat or something

Goosefeather had the ability to speak with dead cats and to predict the future, but this so called 'gift' is useless and as far as i know he can't change, prevent or avoid the events in his visions. It's a curse, and he already had a vision about Pinestar at his nine life ceremony, this vision was a scene about Pinestar entering a twoleg den. Doestar and Thunderstar's warnings, the voices that told Pinestar to kill Tigerkit were only futile attempts to prevent the unavoidable imo. Since Goosefeather knew even at that time the prophecies about the great battle etc.

It just makes the series really depressing to me and takes away the agency of characters and stakes out of situations. I mean, it makes so much sense that Goosefeather is the way he is, because being told the future is forever certain and unchanging is an extremely morbid concept.
