I got Lost Stars recently. Read up to 5 chapters on the day I got it. Jump to today, I am up to chapter 13.
I will preface this by saying that character introductions are very important for me. If their first chapter gives me lots of information on them as individual people, then it's a good chapter. This is important for Warriors mainly, since there's multiple POVs and therefore multiple protagonists to introduce and set up all within ONE chapter.
Shadowpaw:
Keep in mind, I did not read Tigerheart's Shadow and didn't finish AVOS. I have read Tawnypelt's novella, that's it. Shadowpaw was cute as a kit in Tawnypelt's novella, but in this first book, I like him a lot more. It's obvious that since he's older in the main series books, I will think he's better as a mature young cat rather than a cute little curious kit.
His introduction not only sets up the plot of the moonpool being a constant problem in chapters to come, but sets up Shadowpaw's inner conflict of thinking there's something wrong with him than more than just his seizures and visions. From his first chapter, I believe he has lots of character and more going for him beneath the surface.
Rootpaw:
I want to say right off the bat that Rootpaw is my favorite POV right now. He is clearly set up the best. His relationship with his astranged father, how he disagrees with his father's views, how he wants to prove himself and distance himself from his father. Him being bullied because of his father, etc. All very excellent things to introduce in just one chapter. And in the rest of his chapters from then on, he is the most fleshed out and given lots of good personality scenes. And since I'm up to chapter 13, I like his development with Turtlepaw and Kitepaw so far. I hope they become friendly rivals now that they got over their initial grievances. Needlepaw is cute and I'm happy she's a kind and good sister. I'll bring this up later, but Rootpaw's feelings for Bristlepaw are way more natural and understandable compared to Bristlepaw's feelings for Stemleaf.
Bristlepaw/frost:
I hate her. She's my LEAST favorite POV and it's all because of how her first chapter is constructed...Actually, majority of her chapters in the beginning half that I read so far are like this. It's all centered around Stemleaf...This is the same reason why I dislike Sakura in Naruto Part 1--Sakura's dream and goal is to marry Sasuke. That's it. It's the same for Bristlepaw, which made me hate her right off the bat in her first chapter: her only goal is to become Stemleaf's mate. That's it.
The amount of time she has creepy thoughts about Stemleaf is alarming. This is the ONLY thing I got from her character in her introductory chapter. That is it...This is not a good way to introduce any character, especially a main one like Bristlepaw...What else is it about her? Her siblings are nothing but nice to her, aren't jealous when she is given an assessment first/early, and even Stemleaf goes out of his way to praise her, making readers and even Bristlepaw herself believe he likes her back!
There is nothing to Bristlepaw/frost so far that makes me think anything is special about her. Cats keep thinking and saying she's brave and has all the cats' respect, but I don't SEE any of this...There is just too much "telling" and not enough "showing." Same for Stemleaf, but he's just there because Bristlepaw likes him. That's all there is too him as well.
And when she became a warrior and confessed her feelings to Stemleaf, I was even more mad. So, she doesn't want to become a warrior for the glory of serving and helping her clan, but just so she can "finally" become Stemleaf's mate? Really? How shallow and horrible can a character be...? It's the same for Sakura from Naruto: she originally wanted to be a ninja just to get closer to Sasuke.
However, I want to hope that Bristlefrost won't be just another Sakura. Sakura had potential to move on from Sasuke and become strong for no one but HERSELF, but all that changed when Sasuke came back into her life in Shippuden...I just hope Bristlefrost will on from Stemleaf and realize there's more to being a warrior than just being eligible for becoming someone's mate.
When your only goal in life is to become a housewife...that's just plain sad and horrible...Bristlefrost annoys me still, but I will see if anything happens after chapter 12 to change my mind.
