I haven't seen anyone else talk about this on here yet, so I thought it'd be interesting to discuss. During Bristlefrost's warrior ceremony, we get this:
Notice how Bramblestar almost seems to be hesitating. Do you think he was already possessed by this point, or do you think it was really him and something else was troubling him, like the lack of contact with StarClan and/or the harsh leaf-bare?

I liked the idea of it being Ashfur being all "uhhh what do I do what do I say what should I name this cat" but I don't think he was possessed by this point so...I'm guessing StarClan not being there?

I don't think he was possessed yet. He might have just been worried about the lack of connection with StarClan.

At this point I've come to accept most of the stuff coming out of Bramblestar's mouth has something to do with him being worried

He obviously was, if it was him, then Bristlefrost's name would have been Bristlethistle.

I thought it was him possessed at that point but then I realized it was too early then. It seems likely he hesitated because their connection to Starclan was pretty much gone by that point and thus it made it awkward for him.

Judging by how much emphasis he puts on the warrior code I'd say whatever's possessing him had some control but Bramblestar had to die for it to be complete.

Bramblestar was acting notably strange before he died, so he was likely trying to fight the possession until he finally died and lost all control.

Ashfur is probably still salty. It's noted that Squirrelflight decided to live to be with Bramblestar. So the only logical thing to do is to posses Bramblestar and push Squirrelflight away, making her want to be with Ashfur.

I think Ashfur will be in Bramblestar's body in the 2nd book and Rootpaw will have to help Bramblestar's spirit that he can see get back to his own body and get Ashfur out

I think the illness was gradually taking hold. Rootpaw or Shadowpaw did say he sensed something dark in the early parts of the book when he touched Bramblestar.
