If you know me you know that Redtail is one of my favorite background characters in the series.
Ahem, now that that is out of the way...
What did you think of Redtail's Debt, in Path of a Warrior?
I loved the dynamic between Tigerclaw and Redtail, however I don't think Tigerclaw would have been able to manipulate Redtail so easily as he did in RD. This was what Bluestar said of him in ItW, during his vigil:
"I always relied on [Redtail's] judgement, for it bore witness to the needs of the Clan, and was never swayed by self-interest, or pride."

I would have found it really interesting if we got to see Redtail admire Tigerclaw for the apparent loyal, strong, and brave persona we hear everyone believed he possessed in the early TPB books. As we only see Tigerclaw from Fireheart's perspective, who knew basically immediately he was evil, it would have been more innovative to me if we understood why so many of the cats in TC trusted and respected Tigerclaw, with only subtle little hints throughout the story that Tigerclaw was actually evil all along (ones that the reader would be more likely to pick up on then Redtail). That way, the betrayal would have been better written - we, the readers, knew Tigerclaw was bad news the whole time, but we can understood why Redtail didn't, and there would have been that real tragic element. This doesn't mean he couldn't have manipulated Redtail at all, but the cartoonishly evil acts we see Tigerclaw commit in front of Redtail just don't work. (BP had the same issue with having Bluefur seeing Tigerpaw viciously attack a kitten and then apparently forget all about that)
Having Redtail kill Oakheart basically threw the entire novella into a timeline divergence LMFAO, considering that was one of the things that spurned Fireheart into continuing to investigate.

Don't like it solely because I find it absolutely embarrassing that the authors can't keep their shit consistent. Seriously, they make good money to write this series, they should put more effort into making sure they do a good job. Quite an insult to the fans.

It was a disappointment and an insult to me as a first arc fan.

Geez, I guess I'm the one left out with the (somewhat) positive opinion, aren't I? For me, I'm just happy they remembered to write about Redtail at all. However, what I wasn't as happy about, was how they implied that Redtail wasn't able to become deputy on his own, that he needed any cat's help to do it, let alone Tigerclaw. As morningflower said, it diminished Tigerclaw's character as "cartoonishly evil." The stuff Tigerclaw did to Redtail reminded me more of what Darkstripe would do to Longtail.

Don't like it solely because I find it absolutely embarrassing that the authors can't keep their shit consistent. Seriously, they make good money to write this series, they should put more effort into making sure they do a good job. Quite an insult to the fans. This was my biggest gripe. It would have taken a single google search to "remember" that one, and there's no reason at all that it would have been a purposeful retcon. I also didn't like that Bluestar was characterised as a total moron, and that Redtail's own family was completely glossed over - you're telling me he thought of his apprentice and not his daughter or mate in his dying moments?? Okay. All that out the way, I did genuinely really like the development of his and Tigerclaw's relationship. I think I'm in the unpopular opinion boat on that, and Redtail's also one of my favourites so I'm biased, but there was that one line that sent chills down my spine: "'You owe me more than one,' he purred cheerfully. 'You owe me your life!'" Also Redtail's contrast with "you don't owe me anything" to Ravenpaw was a nice "huh" moment. All in all I enjoyed it up until the end; if it had didn't have the glaring error I think it would have been a perfectly good novella.

It was fine, it was kinda useless though. A lot of retconned in personality and it glossed over a lot of details. Also why didn't Redtail fight back against Tigerclaw? He clearly showed that he was very capable in battle but the authors went with "Tigerclaws broad shoulders and huge paws" over a fight between the two.

haven't read it yet, but judging by the replies on this thread it doesn't seem to be that good
