... and this is whether Ashfur could be Bramblestar's possessor. The book gives many hints that Ashfur might have something to do with everything (possessing Bramblestar, giving Shadowpaw his vision, etc).
But the whole book also makes it very clear that StarClan can't communicate with the clans and thus can't help them.
According to the spoiler thread, not even a single StarClan cat appeared in the book, apart from the bonus scene and possibly the cat from the prologue. And it is questionable that he is not affected by it, since he is StarClan cat... So, how exactly could Ashfur have managed to possess Bramblestar and give Shadowpaw the visions?
It's not like there's a secret portal that only he can use. I also doubt very much that there is such a thing. And even if there were, StarClan would notice that. I mean, StarClan is huge. It has a lot of members. So it would be weird if they didn't notice his absence someday. They probably would notice it at the latest when curing Bramblestar's sickness.
And cats like Bluestar, Yellowfang and Hollyleaf would not allow this.
So does anyone of you have a satisfying solution?

This is what I'm trying to figure out as well. So many signs point to Ashfur, but maybe he left StarClan just before the frost blocked the connection, or maybe Squirrelflight staying StarClan's hunting grounds before her time affected something. Or maybe he's in league with someone who's been helping him.

Well, they didn't cure Bramblestar's sickness. He's in limbo.
I imagine that this wasn't really planned if it was Ashfur. They mention it's been moons since the moonpool froze over, so maybe he just saw an opportunity to finally get revenge and jumped on it?
I mean, if Starclan can't contact the clans, would the Dark Forest be able to? And let's say it's Sol, did he believe in StarClan? What happened to him when he died?
There aren't really many satisfying solutions. Just a lot of questions.

This is what I struggle with as well. If Ashfur is in StarClan, why does he of all cats still have connection to the living?

This problem gives me the longer I think about it a headache. Well, maybe Ashfur shows up in SH and we get a clear answer. Or Kate accidentally will leak something like she did with Rootpaw...

I'm thinking whoever this cat is (possibly Ashfur) took the opportunity to leave StarClan just before the lake froze over completely and latched on to a gullible cat (Shadowpaw).

maybe the series can finally drop the "only clan cats have an afterlife" BS. if it is sol (which i personally want), then have him be his own spirit not starclan or dark forest related. please for the love of god, the unspoken rule of ONLY starclan or ONLY dark forest is ridiculous.

There is scene that where Shadowpaw goes to the moonpool alone and lighting falls from the sky, after that he begins to hear the voice constantly. So the thing came at least from the moonpool. And then we have the prologue of the starry warrior.
