Chapter One Homecoming “Welcome back.” The voice seemed distant hollow as if the years spent in passing had changed it more than they should have. The young man stood at the top of the grand stairs leading to the mansion of a house. The wood paneling had faded as if no one had re-stained it. The man’s hair was tousled and dark lines creased his face. It had been a long flight, to this place witch in a way was his home. He had spent his childhood and much of the summer times after he was 12 and until he was 15. That had been 5 years, no wait almost 6. Tomorrow was his 21 birthday. He had been summoned back to the house on the hill to see the man he had once called Father. The tall oak door creaked out, a large dog came out too join the man. “Your still around old friend.” The man said fluffing the Irish wolfhound looking dog’s fur. “Your Father said too plan to see him at super.”The older man stepped out. The family butler the same one form the man’s childhood. “Thank you.” The man said. “Welcome Home, Ethan.” The older man said. “It’s good to see you and Grim.” Ethan said running his hand over the dog. The dog and the butler had practically raised him. The older man came forward to hug him. Ethan bent to hug him. “Any idea why Father called me home?” Ethan said tentatively. “Your father is dying; I think he called you here to beg forgiveness.” The butler said as he looked over Ethan. “Dying, Why didn’t he call for me sooner, Sam.” Ethan said in shock. “He wanted too but he didn’t feel you would come. Your brother said you would.” Sam said. Ethan’s face light up “Is he here.” He asked the words coming out rapidly. Ethan’s brother Jasper had long been one of his best friends but on their Father’s orders they had not spoken. “Yes, he has been for while now. Take Grim with you. He is in your rooms.” Before Sam had finished Ethan had shouldered the heavy bag and rushed into the house The dog was at his heels, a boy and his dog once more. Ethan climbed the grand staircase to the hallway. He walked on, his mind was full, racing with excitement, ready to see Jasper. This center part of the house had been home to the family, the wing to the left the servant housing and the right wing the guest rooms and offices. Ethan stopped at a room and knocked tentatively. The door was flung open in his face. “Ethan.” The tall youth said as he warped around him. Hugging him almost choking him. 5 years almost 6 years apart hadn’t changed Ethan’s little brother. “Happy birthday little brother, 19 years old at last.” Ethan said. “Happy Birthday ,tomorrow.” Jasper said to him smiling. “It’s good to be home.” Ethan said beaming now. “It’s better with you here too.”Jasper broke the hug now. His blue eyes were misty with happy tears. Ethan noted that Jasper had left his black hair long and messy. “I know, it’s been far too long.” Ethan said as he ran a hair in his black hair. “What have you been up too?” Jasper asked. “School, work, I’m a lawyer.” Ethan said, “And you?” “Same, I’m going away to school next year.” Jasper smiled, “Sit down.” He said as he sat back down on the ornate bed. Ethan flopped down next to him. Grim jumped up between the two boys. They talked and talked as the clock hands showed the passing of time hour by hour. The boy’s caught up on the years they had spent apart. Time seemed too move much too quickly and at last a great bell rang out, signaling dinner. Ethan heard the bell and looked up. “Dinnertime already.” Jasper said puzzledly. “Yeap. Father still eats early I see.” Ethan said matter of factly. “Old habits die hard.” Jasper stated. “Shall we go down?” Ethan said in as manner showing a lack of care. “Yes, Get it over with.” Jasper said. Grim had leapt off the bed and he waited near the door now. Ethan got up and opened it, he left his bag on the floor. Jasper got up and the two brothers made their way down the staircase. Ethan’s nerves were high, worry about seeing his father left him less cheery. Jasper on the other had was practically bouncing, glad to have his brother home and in time for birthday dinner. They walked down the thick rugged hallway. Jasper opened the door to the dining room. Ethan’s eyes spotted the oak table were so many dinner’s had been eaten. Then last time he had sat here he had been sent away. Banished, told to never return, made to feel unwelcome. In an ornate chair at the head of the table sat a pale, thin, white haired older man. “Father.” Ethan’s voice cut off. The old man was once handsome, tall and will built. Jasper took a seat close to their father, on the left side of the table. Ethan winched as he stood before the man. “Hello son.” The voice was weak and shaky. “Hello Father.” The words fell flat lacking all the normal pattern of his voice. As if the old man’s words where all used up, he simply pointed to a seat. Ethan sat pushing the chair back and in slowly. The butler Sam appeared; he poured the wine into Father’s glass and then Grape juice closer to wine into the boy’s. Musty Cherry and Grape smells filled the room. Ethan sipped the drink with little thought. The drinking was the only sound for a few seconds. “Ethan it’s good to have you home.”Father started to speak then a fit of coughing stopped him. The mood was solemn, grim. Jasper and Ethan’s eyes met then glanced away each deep in thought about everything. More attempts to speak and more coughing as well as wheezing as the soup was brought out. Lemon and Lamb filled the air now mixing with the fruit. Ethan was taken back to dinners passed. Mother, Father, Jasper and him, before he was 12 and things changed. Ethan took up a spoon, an ornate one, a soup spoon, form the set given to his mother by her mother. Odd he remembered so much about a spoon. It was just a spoon. Ethan moved the spoon towards the bowl. The warm lemony lamby dish filling his month as it had on Jasper’s many birthdays and at other times over his years here. Near the hearth Grim dinned form the silver bowl. “I’m sorry.” It was close to a whisper, “I sent you away.” Father said then coughed yet again. “I know…Put aside the past I’m home. I’m not going anywhere.” Ethan said, “Save your words we have much to say Father.” Fish and more lemon drifted into the room. “Salmon is my favorite not your Jasper.” Ethan said as he stopped the pink fish. “I know….. but this is your welcome home dinner as much as it is my birthday and your tomorrow.” Jasper said smiling. “Thank you Brother.” Ethan said as his fish was set before him. Dinner was a quiet; knives, forks and glasses the only sound. When the plates where cleared away for dessert; Father rose to give a toast then fell back into the chair. “Father toast form your chair.” Jasper chided, “If you must toast at all.” The glasses were filled once again by Sam. Ethan had a thought where is the staff. “Like Father fired them,” He said under his breath, “Probably the night I left at least all the staff that could have known.” Slices of white cake on plates were placed before them. Ethan smiled the cook was still the same. “On your,” Cough Cough,” Birthday,” Then Father coughed again it got worse each time, “I’m so proud.” Cough Cough, “To call you son.”Cough Cough, “Jasper.” The boys listened this would be the second to last toast Father would give. “I offer a toast to my son.” Father said slowly. The boy’s tapped glasses with their Father. Then they ate and drank. When the plates were cleared away Sam came and stood by Father. “It is late, I will see you in the morning.” Father and Sam left the room with a good night form his sons. Ethan rose to his feet and telling Jasper goodnight, called for Grim. As they had so many times before Grim and Ethan climbed the stairs. He grabbed his bag and entered his room across form Jaspers. Soon the dog and Ethan were curled up on the bad dead to the world.
