strider will make this look pretty later ~ characters: Kylie Morgan - Kylie is a somewhat thinly built 15 year old whose height is a little shorter than 5'2. She has long blonde hair with waves towards the ends that is either hung loose or pulled up into a bun. She has very fair, creamy colored skin and sharp steel-blue eyes. She is also slightly baby-faced with rounded cheeks and full lips. She has typical clothes among her age group, though if looked closely one can see the wear in them. At first deemed shy at a glance, Kylie is just quiet to those she doesn't know and prefers to keep to herself rather than indulge in the common gossip of her peers. However, with those who she does consider friends, she really does enjoy the company and can be pretty easy-going. A stressful home life keeps her preoccupied from others, though, as she currently helps to take care of her ill mother while her father is off at work. Iris Barnes -

Iris Barnes looked outside the window of her apartment, letting her elbows rest on the banister of the balcony. The city was a bustle of motion and noise, with people shouting to each other from one side of the street to the other. Carriages raced by quickly and erratically, the horses that led them either in a hurry to get home or spurred on by drivers were just a bit too impatient. Being so high up above the city, Iris could see a lot. She could see the smoke rising up from factories, could see men in their offices going about their daily work. It was mid afternoon - many of them should be leaving soon, her father included. He worked too far away for her to see properly, but she knew she would have to go and set the table soon enough for his return. She had a few hours, at least, to take in the city, as she always did. School was done for the day, and though she could see a few of her classmates mingling in the streets, or on carriages, Iris had no wish to go down and join them. Many of them lived in her neighborhood, sure, but she had little interest in spending time with them now after spending the entire week with them before. She hated how they seemed to flirt with any young man who came near them. She tried to ignore the little voice in the back of her head that claimed it was jealousy. Not that they were able to flirt, but that they weren't flirting with her. That was a thought she would never let her father hear. Iris sighed, taking in a breath of the New York air. It wasn't as nice as the air in the country, but it wasn't as bad as the stuffy air in the rest of the apartment - and it meant she didn't have to deal with her brother at the moment. She felt invincible on that balcony - like she was floating above everything, seen by nobody.

Kylie Morgan jogged through the streets of the city, a light skip in her step along the way. Today she'd been given a little extra money to stop at the bakery on her way home from school, and she clutched the bag of goodies close to her chest as if afraid to give it too loose a grip. She could still smell the freshness and her mouth watered. She could hardly wait, but first would have to be dinner, of course. Still, she hoped it would bring a smile to her mother's face as her father had ordered it be a surprise for her. The image of her mother in bed flashed its way through Kylie's mind at this thought and she fought to shake it out.
Distracted now, a group of smaller children rushed past and Kylie barely had any time to react as her mind had wandered from the path. She tried to sidestep at the last minute, but she caught the heel of the last kid and tripped chest-first into the sidewalk below the apartment building, long hair falling from its bun due to the force of the fall. She coughed once, the wind knocked out of her, and she struggled to gather herself now, her senses jostled.

Iris watched silently from above, her eyes catching on the site of Kylie with her bakery bag. It was sweet, the excitement on the other girl's face, the way she seemed seconds away from giving in and opening the bag to eat whatever was inside sooner, rather than later. It was even sweeter the way she held back. She let her gaze drift away from Kylie - who she was pretty sure she recognized from school, but she really wasn't certain - and towards the group of small children playing in the street and on the sidewalk. She didn't begrudge them their fun, but their shrieks of laughter were grating to say the least. Iris was moments away from withdrawing back into the apartment to get away from the noise when something caught her eye - a sudden flash of a dress upended, hair flying free from what had previously been a carefully coiffed style. The kids seemed to continue on as if nothing happened, but the girl seemed to be having a hard time picking herself back up. Without thinking twice about it - because she wasn't the hero type, and any real thinking on the matter would have convinced her not to help - Iris raced down the flights of stairs to the street, where she hoped the girl would still be laying. "Are you alright?" she called, tugging open the main entrance to the apartment building, before she could even really see Kylie. Her own dark hair had begun to fly away from its up-do, but she found she didn't care at the moment.

Kylie sucked in a hard breath, forcing the air into her lungs as she used her elbows to brace herself against the ground. Ah, her clothes were all scuffed up now. Maybe the stark white blouse hadn't been a good choice to wear today, she thought to herself as she noticed the black and dirt smeared along her sleeves. The door to her side opening caught her eye and she looked up when someone called out to her, blinking at the figure of a girl there. Embarrassment immediately flooded her face and Kylie forced her gaze back down to hide the red on her cheeks behind her loose hair.
"Y-Yes," she managed to get out, chest still heavy from the fall. She pushed herself up so she was at least on her knees now, though a frown tugged at her mouth as she saw the state of her skirt. The dark fabric worked to hide the grime from the sidewalk, but there were a couple of spots that would need sewing to fix the fraying threads. She looked back up at Iris, still flustered, and gave a small nod. This girl went to the same school as her, right? Kylie thought she recognized her, but any name was lost to her in the moment. "Sorry to have made you come down. I-I'm fine now," she then said, rubbing the back of her neck. She hadn't missed the flyaway strands of Iris' hair; had she run to check on her?
Oh. Kylie moved her legs and her face fell at the crinkle of the bag under her weight. No, no, no. Sure enough, shifting away and lifting the bag up revealed the flattened outside and most certainly the inside mirrored the same. The pastries...

"You didn't make me come down," Iris replied, her hand on her hip. "I saw you fall and I was worried, so I thought I could come down and check on you." She held out her hand so as to help Kylie up from her kneeling position, if the other girl wanted. She noticed the pastry bag and the way Kylie's face seemed to fall, and something in her made a decision.
"My father gave me some pocket money yesterday," Iris informed Kylie. "I was planning on perhaps getting a new petticoat, but I have plenty as of right now, so I don't really need more." It was a flimsy excuse, she knew, and her father would want to know where the money went, but if the neighborhood boys had tripped Kylie, then the least Iris could do was offer to buy her some more pastries to replace the ones that had been crushed. At some point, Iris knew she and her brother had been on the small child side of it. She didn't know if they had ever tripped anyone, but she doubted they would have noticed if they had. "The children here are practically little demons," she half-joked, adjusting her skirt and petticoat so they looked nicer. So she seemed more the shrewd and mature adult she wanted to be perceived as. Really, the actions of the kids had angered her, that they had just left Kylie on the sidewalk like that.
Iris hesitated for a moment, before placing her hand back between herself and Kylie, this time for a handshake. "I'm not sure I know your name, actually. I've seen you at school, but I suppose we've never had class together, or had an excuse to make acquaintances. My name is Iris Barnes." She hoped she seemed proper, but she really couldn't judge the image she was putting out of herself. She wanted to make a good first impression, which usually she didn't care much about. She could be petulant and angry and vindictive against the right person if they'd done something to her, but all Kylie had done was fall, and in Iris' eyes, it was the least she could do to help her and make sure she replaced the pastries that had been crushed. The girl reddened as she realized she had never made her intention clear. "I... I apologize. It may have seemed as though I was bragging, but... I thought perhaps... I could replace those pastries for you."

"Oh. Well...thank you." She wasn't all to used to someone going out of their way for her. She was simply a stranger among the streets of New York, surely no one would care about one girl tripping. Kylie glanced back up from the crushed bag as Iris stepped forward to hold out a hand. She hesitated to take it, her eyes widening instead as the girl went on to talk about her money. She couldn't actually be offering to help, could she? Kylie didn't know what to say to that. Her lips parted to speak but her words fell flat. "Uhm--" She partially hid her face behind the bag, still flustered over having caused this scene, and her eyes kept flickering from Iris' face to the ground.
After a second Kylie managed to stand up, wincing a bit in the process and guessing she probably had gotten some kind of friction burn on her knees when falling. She attempted to fix her clothes before full on facing Iris, though there wasn't much she could do at this point. She'd just have to look a right mess for the time being, she supposed. Well... "I'm Kylie Morgan," she said after the other's introduction as she reached out to gently accept the handshake. "Right, I have seen you around." She didn't mention the fact that she normally kept away from most other kids was probably the reason that they hadn't actually spoken before.
But it was sort of sweet, Kylie thought, at the way Iris tried to properly present herself. A little smile tugged at the corners of her mouth before she gave pause to then quickly shake her head at the offer. "I couldn't possibly have you do that!" she protested. "It's your own money, after all, and I...I'm practically a stranger to you." Kylie would feel much too guilty if she allowed Iris to pay for it all just because she hadn't been paying enough attention. She worried her lip between her teeth, her own cheeks gaining a slight flush.

"Nice to meet you, Kylie," Iris replied, straightening her posture and offering a smile. It wasn't difficult to tell what Iris was feeling - she wore it pretty plainly on her sleeve - and it was clear she was flustered, but decently content. And Kylie's smile made her feel even more that running down was probably the best thing. She couldn't shake the feeling that Vern would hold it over her head for a while, teasing her for being so quick to jump to a stranger's rescue, but part of her wondered if she even minded. If she could help Kylie, wasn't that worth her brother's teasing derision? He really would never let her hear the end of this, especially when she gave him such a hard time for his generosity. Iris Barnes hated hypocrites, but there was no denying that in this situation she was one herself.
"I know your name, and I've seen you at less than your best already," Iris replied bluntly. It wasn't meant to be an accusation or any sort of comment on Kylie as a person, just a statement of fact. "Through no fault of your own, of course, but given the circumstances I would hardly say we're strangers. Besides, it's not my money, really. It's my father's. And I haven't the need for it." She regarded Kylie with her piercing grey gaze for a few moments before making a decision.
"Either you let me, or you have no say in which pastries you get." With that, Iris turned heel and began to walk back to the pastry shop. She figured Kylie would follow, but she hadn't been bluffing. If Kylie didn't follow, she would buy several pastries and bring them to school with her on Monday sot hat she could give them to Kylie then, should she see her. Of course, the pastries would be stale, but whose fault would that be? Nobody's. But they wouldn't be stale if Kylie let Iris do it now. At least, that was what was going through Iris' mind as she made the first several strides towards the pastry shop. Several steps down, she stopped and turned around. "Though, if you keep standing there, you may be bowled over by another hurricane of little boys," she added with a smirk, waiting for Kylie to catch up.
