Lightning padded through the forest, her ice blue eyes and ears alert for the sound of any other rogues or prey. She was further from home than she usually went, she could barely hear the running of twoleg monsters on the busy streets close to where she made her home a whole season ago. Stopping in her tracks, she felt her jet black pelt raise on her back when she heard a twig snap behind a large oak tree. She tried to scent whatever it was, unsheathing her claws. She twitched her tail in delight when she scented a vole. Perfect! As she crept silently, the night wind was cool in her pelt as it blew the scent toward her. She almost let out a purr when she saw the shadow of the little body sniffing about. Only a few feet away, she pounced. Quickly killing it, messier than she wished to. Lightning purred in delight as she began eating it, thinking about her past. She moved here only a season ago, when she was just a little over six moons. Her family was captured by the twolegs and she managed to escape them by hiding in a mouse hole. Being small had its benefits then. She taught herself almost everything she knew, apart from some of the hunting she remembered from her mother. Lightning sighed, she missed her littermates and mother. She always thought that one day she would find them. Quickly finishing off her vole, she walked toward home. She tried to scent any more prey she could possibly get to bring home.

Green eyes glistened behind a spray of maple leaves. Olive peered down through crimson foliage, trying to catch a glimpse of the forest floor, her snowy-white paws quivering as she forced back rising fear. Stay calm… Just stay calm…
The emotions stirring in Olive's chest broke through her stoic resolve, allowing fresh memories to spring unabated into her mind. She was jerking awake from a nightmare, only to hear a crash from the kitchen. A deafening, whirring sound was coming from outside her housefolk's den. Her Twoleg was being carried away, disappearing into the back of a huge white monster. Blinding blue-and-red eyes were slicing through the night. And after several sunrises, hunger was driving the kittypet to venture beyond her garden into the woods behind the Twolegplace.
Now, from her dizzying perch, Olive felt her tortoiseshell-and-white pelt stand on end. She heard a flurry of barking in the distance, growing louder by the heartbeat. Terror overtook the newly-made loner as the dog she’d scented from her makeshift nest on the ground burst into the hollow; the she-cat shook uncontrollably, causing the branch below her to sway beneath her paws. “Help! Somecat, please!”

Lighting perked her ears when she heard a dog barking dangerously close, as well as another cat's cry. Im not alone? This is my spot! She thought as she quickly padded in that direction. She was protective of her territory but she has a stronger sense to help the cat. She began trotting toward the area, the scent getting stronger. It was another she-cat and the strong scent of dog. She let out a low growl as she unsheathed her claws. She felt her heart beat faster when she saw the she-cat in the tree, looking terrified. Lightning froze when the scent of another cat drifted through her nose. Who else was here? She ignored it as she ran toward the tree quickly, climbing it quickly. "Who are you?" She spoke quickly as the barks got closer, not climbing on the branch. She tried to think of what she could do to get them to safety. Her mind buzzing with ideas, the dog was now in sight as it looked for them. She was glad it was mostly dark, the moonlight making the animal visible. She glanced around and noticed a thorn bush tucked between a rock pile. "Never mind that, over there!" She hissed quietly as she flicked her ears and jumped down silently. It would hurt, but not as much as a dog bite.

Olive blanched as the stranger plummeted down into a thorn bush. She can't be serious! But as she glanced down at the dog lunging at the branch just below her, its massive fangs snapping and golden eyes glaring hatred, she realized she had no choice but to follow. She dug her claws into the bark, steeling her courage. Here goes nothing! She was about to leap when, suddenly, the dog tore off across the hollow. Olive stared in disbelief as she realized another stranger, this one a green-eyed tom, had diverted its attention. "Look out!" she yowled, taking an unthinking step forward. She fell off the branch with a shocked mrrow! The wind was knocked out of her as she crashed through the thorn bush. After staring stupidly up through the bristling stems for several heartbeats, she realized she was uninjured and pulled herself to her paws.

A monster roared past, crimson pelt gleaming as it belched noxious fumes. Flare blinked his smarting, watery eyes as he glanced quickly from left to right; all was clear. The lean, fiery-pelted tabby streaked across the Thunderpath and pelted into the forest. He skidded to a halt and took deep, calming breaths, drinking in great gulps of fresh air as he slowly turned in place, sharp amber eyes roaming over his surroundings. He was free! Flare felt his heart surge in his chest at the thought. He had often come to the forest to rest and hunt for a few days at a time when Scrap forayed into the outer edges of Twolegplace with his closest followers, but the knowledge that he had to return before his father arrived always weighed him down and honed a bitter edge on his temporary freedom. All that had changed, however. Flare closed his eyes as he relived the moment:
Flare stared at the ground, bracing himself for what he knew was coming. A heavy paw clouted him across the face. Scrap’s claws traced a furrow across his cheek. “You don’t tell me what to do! You belong to me!” the powerful black-and-white tom hissed. Flare felt something move in his chest. Something sparked, burst into flame, surged through him, roared through his veins. It was anger. Anger and defiance. With a yowl ripping from his throat, Flare lunged upwards, raking his claws across his father’s face, slanting towards the neck. “No! You’re wrong. I don’t belong to you. I don’t belong to anyone!” Scrap slumped over, his legs buckling underneath him. Blood spurted into Flare’s eyes. When he blinked the droplets away, he almost wished he hadn’t. His father lay before him. Dead.
Flare shook away the awful memories, feeling the toll of his flight through Twolegplace weigh heavily on him. Pain was lancing through his cheek, and he could still feel blood slowly trickling from the wound. He didn’t get the opportunity to check out his reflecting in a pool of water, but he had a feeling it wasn’t going to be pretty. Not that he cared. Flare knew that he had had every right to take on his father’s leadership of the alley cats, but all he wanted to do was distance himself as much as possible from his former life, so he had fled while everyone was still frozen in shock. The forest was fresh and clean; a perfect place to start a new chapter of life. As the tom managed to wrench his thoughts away from the past and focus on the present, scents touched his nose; that of three cats, and a gradually fading stench of what could only be dog. Fear curdled in the air. Flare padded toward the source of the smells, curiosity pricking his pelt. He finally emerged into a small clearing, where he beheld two she-cats and a tom, standing rigid as if in shock. One was obviously a kittypet. He waited for them to notice him, too exhausted to exercise proper caution.

Lighting growled when she emerged from the bushes, limping. She got a few thorns in her paw when she accidentally stepped on a thorn branch. When she managed to get to the clearing she let out the quietest whimper as her paw touched the ground. I think thats all i stepped on?She thought. For the first time, she looked up. There were more cats here, she noticed two tom cats walking up, and the she-cat she realized must be a kittypet, was still here. Probably to scared to move. Lighting had to admit that fear struck her when she saw the other two cats. She tried to hide her injured paw, which wasn't that hard considering it was hard to see blood on black fur. She let out a small growl as her fur rose, unsheathing her claws. She would fight if she had to. She had been alone for a long time, rarely ever seeing another cat. She could scent them everywhere, and she saw a few kittypets but not many like her crossed her path yet. These toms were definitely larger than her so she would have to be smart.

Flare looked around at the other cats. A blue-eyed black she-cat caught his attention as she growled aggressively, her fur prickling. Her slight limp did not escape the tom’s eye. He unsheathed his claws in turn, meowing in a firm voice, “Hey, I didn’t come here to fight, but if you want some fur to fly, I’m ready for you.” He nodded at her paw, which she seemed to be holding stiffly, careful not to put weight on it. "Though I don't think you're in any condition to. A facial scar actually allows you to move your paws, if you know what I'm saying." Flare flicked his tail at his wounded cheek.

Lighting narrowed her gaze as she sheathed her claws. How bold of him! She sized him up, taking a good look at him and tried to think about how long he was on his own. He was probably a better fighter, especially if he knew she was injured. "Bold of you to think an injury would stop me from defending myself." She growled back, but flattened her fur more as she narrowed her gaze at him. She could make out the scar on his face in the moonlight, he was very noticeable.

Wincing as thorns scratched against her sides, Olive backed up several paw steps, fear coursing through her. She was instinctively careful not to keep her eyes off the loners. Old memories resurfaced of the time she'd spent with her mother and littermates, before she'd met her Twoleg; her mother had told them stories of fierce wild cats who roamed dark alleyways and attacked kittypets without mercy. I have to get out of here! But she couldn't bring herself to move. The black she-cat had tried to help her escape, hadn't she? And the first tom had fought off that horrid dog. She owed them her gratitude-- maybe even her life. She couldn't just run away without thanking them. Not to mention the fact that I won't last long out here on my own. The thought made her shudder. Maybe they can show me where to find some food. There must be a garden out here where the birds won't know to watch out for cats. Otherwise, they wouldn't be able to survive without Twolegs. Olive took a deep breath before padding forward into the open. "I'm sorry to interrupt but...Thank you," she meowed, dipping her head to the she-cat and green-eyed tom in turn. "I don't know what I would've done if you two didn't show up!" She hesitated for a moment, her tail twitching uncertainly. "M-My name's Olive." She turned to the ginger tom and lowered her head respectfully.

Lighting sighed as she relaxed more when he changed the topic. "This kittypet was about to be attacked by a dog when i heard her cry. I came here to help but the dog got distracted and left. And I have no idea who he is?" She said as she flicked her ears to the other tom. She blinked as she watched him, still deciding if she would attack him or not. She no longer thought he was a direct threat, but he was cocky and she didn't know what to think of it. She tensed as she tried not to wince when her paw relaxed, hitting the ground slightly. She let out a small whimper as she looked away. The last thing she needed to do was look weak in front of possible dangerous cats. She knew it would be difficult to get the thorns out later, she could feel her paw throbbing but she tried to ignore it. What now? The dog was long gone, and now there were four strangers standing in front of each other, a kittypet and three loners. She glanced back at the kittypet when she began talking. She gave a small nod as she gave her a once over. Why was a kittypet so far into the forest alone? How was she alive?

Flare nodded at the black she-cat’s explanation. “Ah,” he mewed, but before he could get further the kittypet-Olive, she was called-began to thank her saviors. Flare thought he might have seen her in Twolegplace when he was in Scrap’s band. As he took in her bristling fur and wide, scared eyes he wondered if she recognized him as one of the cats who terrorized the cat who lived in the garden next door to hers. Or perhaps she was reacting to the other cats this way, as well. “Yes, I am curious.” he meowed cautiously, watching her carefully for any signs of recognition. “Why aren’t you warm in a Twoleg den right now, instead of deep in the forest?” How did you even survive for this long? Was on the tip of his tongue, though he refrained from voicing the inquiry.

Lightning almost let out a purr of laughter. She settled in a slightly awkward position as she attempted to get the thorns from her paw, her task almost impossible for her to bend that way. She twitched her tail in frustration as her paw throbbed in pain. She should probably search for some herbs to help it. But she currently needed to stay here, she was a little curious about these cats. It was rare she came along any like this. She was about to ask the kittypet something but decided to keep her mouth shut, flicking her gaze to the tom.

Olive stared at her paws. "Well... My Twoleg's garden looks out over the big Thunderpath, so I've always been able to see the woods from on top of my fence. My Twoleg left. I waited for him to come back, but first I finished the food in my dish... Then I caught birds in the garden-- I'd never bothered them before, so it took them a while to stop visiting. I didn't know what to do then, but I knew it was dangerous to try and find a new Twoleg-- there are dogs and wild cats everywhere. Even my neighbor Smoky is always hiding from these awful rogues, and he's only a little bit farther into Twolegplace than I am. So... I set out yesterday to try and find a nice garden in the woods." She finished, certain her last statement would seem quite sensible to the loners.

Lighting flicked her ears as she kept her gaze on the tom. Did he hear what she was saying? She couldn't believe what she just heard. She sighed as she waited for the tom to speak first and just turned her attention back to her paw. She thought about what she could do with this cat. She did feel a little bad, she never knew what it was like to live with a twoleg, but im sure that was the biggest comfort for this cat.

Olive tipped her head to one side, her confusion making her feel defensive. I've never heard the forest was dangerous! I've never met a cat from them. "How do you know? You smell like you live in Twolegplace, not in the woods. I've heard plenty of birdsong since I came here. And what could be scarier than a dog?"

Lighting nodded in agreement when the tom spoke. She let out a sigh when she thought of the twolegs that lived near where she stayed sometimes. They has grey fur on their heads and were quiet. "If you want, I can take you to somewhere you could live with grey furred twolegs. They are slow and quiet. Or you could try ruffing it." She said, ending with a huff. She wasn't too sure how to act around these cats. She growled to herself as she pinched her pad with her teeth. Lashing her tail in annoyance. It was that dogs fault. No, it was the kittypet's fault, now she couldnt defend herself.

Olive blinked, a curious mixture of emotions swirling in the pit of her stomach. The ginger tom's descriptions were enough to set her mind spinning. Creatures bigger and fiercer than dogs? How could that be possible? Still, he seemed to know what he was talking about, and she couldn't deny that she had little experience defending herself. The tortoiseshell she-cat's whiskers drooped as she realized how silly she must seem to these loners, mewling. Still, she was a bit loath to abandon her carefully thought-out plans. I was hoping to find a woodland garden. But.. Maybe I should take up the black she-cat's offer. My old Twoleg had gray fur, too... "Do the Twolegs want a house cat?" she asked suddenly, unable to keep the hopeful excitement from her mew.

Lighting shrugged as she gave up on her paw for now. She ignored the pain as she looked at the she-cat. "I dont know, but they seem nice enough, they feed the other kittypets that wander out, and the odd loner. I haven't been close enough to see. She got up to her feet once again and looked around wearily. She wasn't too sure what to do, as much as she hated cats being kittypets, she didn't want to babysit the she-cat if she decided to be a loner. Lighting wasn't too sure if she was cut out for it. A twinge of sadness poked her as she remembered her one sister being a lot like this she-cat before they were all taken.

A thrill of excitement ran through Olive. "They sound nice! ...But, are you really alright with guiding me there? I can't imagine the route won't take us past all sorts of rogues, and dogs..." Her eyes stretched wide. "Plus, you're paw's in pretty bad shape! I can't ask you to put yourself in danger for me in that condition." She glanced at the ginger tom. "You said you know this forest, right? Do you think... Maybe there's a place I could stay until her paw heals up? Then I'll be out of your fur faster than you can say 'dinnertime'!"
