Someone just threatened to, and I quote, "tear [my] dog's throat out if he barks at either [him] or [his] wife".
Excuse me, you piece of carp, but my dog has severe anxiety issues. He immediately gets thrown into an anxiety attack the moment he spots a stranger due to his abusive past. He will bark and cry and dart around as an alarm signal to both the stranger and us, a kind of "back off, you're scaring me" statement. Anyone with a logical piece of their brain can tell the difference between an attack bark and a frightful bark.
Furthermore, it's an awful thing to do to threaten the life of a person's pet right in front of them. Clearly, you've never met a dog. Dogs bark. That's just the nature of dogs. Secondly, don't you dare complain and threaten a barking dog when you are taking temporary home in a hotel who willingly welcomes dogs. And thirdly, but definitely not least important, NEVER THREATEN THE LIFE OF AN ANIMAL, BE IT VERBAL OR OTHERWISE.

the guy's awful
but regardless you should try and pinpoint the source of your dog's anxiety. past traumas influence present behavior, but present troubles can bring out past trauma. for instance, it could be that your dog doesn't understand what his place in the pack (family/household) is. nobody made it clear to him what things he's considered responsible to deal with or not. basically: "wait what am i suppose to be doing?? is this right?? hello, guys! what should i do?!" dogs means of communications as a pack are very different from ours.
for instance: if your dog gets very anxious, restless, etc. when people enter the house, do not send the dog away to their bed/spot/crate or put them up. in a way, this is telling your dog, "i don't trust you to handle this situation. go away." which confuses the dog, because in other circumstances you may be signaling full trust to the dog. this show of distrust can further their anxiety. best thing to do in such a circumstance: tell the dog to stand a short distance away and let him watch you greet the guest first. then invite the dog over to meet them. this tells the dog: "it is not your job to check strangers, that's my job. but i trust you to interact with them one i've given you the all clear."
idk if that's an actual problem your dog has, but take it as an example. anxious dogs usually need a firm hand, not a gentle one. they need their owners to be the clear leaders, so that the dog's position and responsibilities in the pack can't be confused. many, many anxious dogs just need clear boundaries. especially the previously abused pets. their past traumatic life has confused them as to where they belong in their new home.
source: my brother, a dog-trainer, and experience from our own dog (rescued from an abusive home)

Ugh, I hate when people are like that. My aunt/neighbor threatened to take our dog and neuter him if we didn't, since her female dogs were in heat and our dog liked to play with her dogs (You cant force someone to neuter their own dog! and maybe you should keep your female dogs inside away from the great outdoors where other neighbors male dogs roam free) We ignored her, but never let our down roam free again. He's always chained up to a tree, now...but the irony of the story is, that about every day, we see her female dogs loose and they like to go on our property and play with our dog. :/ Our aunt is what you'd call a female dog...if ya know what I mean...
