When people debate, do they simply try to point out facts or change their minds, or both? I know that the section is made for that, but it seems pointless as no one in the forums will change their minds no matter what people say (and I'm one of them)
I know I'm going to get people say that the topic is made for debating and such, but why can't people just simply post? Like an example would be you just wanna talk about Crowfeather's Trial or Ivypool, and several people are going to debate with you about it and we all know very well that nothing will change.
I know debating isn't arguing. But I'm wondering what's the POINT of it? It honestly gets frustrating sometimes. Like I understand if you're defending the character or something, but most of the time people are not going to change their minds so debating seems pointless to me.
I'm probably not even making sense lol. It's just a thing I've noticed in signatures and posts, that people say you won't change their mind. So it got me to wondering, during debates, is that what people actually try to do? I just don't understand why everything needs to be a debate on here.

It doesn't happen often...at all...but that doesn't mean we shouldn't debate or that's its pointless. Like how would one even talk with others about CT or Ivypool without debate? That'd be like impossible and really boring, and dare I say quite pointless

Debating isn’t really trying to change the other person’s mind. It supposed to help them see another side, not necessarily agree with it, but get them to understand it better.

That'd be like impossible and really boring, and dare I say quite pointless I mean, I suppose I can understand the point, but it feels like everything has to be a debate. Like, say I make a topic about Silverstream, can't people just reply saying "I like Silverstream because ______"? Like you don't always have to respond to the quote. It just gets frustrating because sometimes people just want to state their opinions. Debating happens when you respond to a quote and try to prove your facts and it ends up lasting longer than it should. Some even take it personally, like my topic a person not too long ago (I'm not calling out names and those involved, please don't either) purposefully tried to start one because they got mad that someone didn't like a character and it ended up into something a bit more inappropriate. It's just really frustrating why people can't just simply post. I know some fans have anxiety about this on here because there's others that act aggressive and do take it personally now and then.

What’s the point in posting something and then not wanting others to discuss it? There’s a fun aspect of “debate” or discussion especially with opposing opinions. I think the bigger problem is how easily people think a discussion or debate is a fierce argument or toxic. I can show you a harsh argument. But I’d rather talk about differing opinions.

I agree that people shouldn't take it personally, that's when it starts getting toxic...but why would you even want to post your opinions if you don't want anyone to respond to them? And honestly, if someone has anxiety which means can't handle debates, than they shouldn't be on here...

I'm with Moonblazer. If someone posts a discussion topic, and then someone responds and then the next person responds telling them not to argue with them.... If you don't want your points to be argued, it's best not to post them. Discussion isn't harmful and it shouldn't be taken personally.

When you post, expect a response. Otherwise there would be no point in forums. There doesn't need to be a debate all the time, but conversation is where it's at. Some things are taken too seriously.

I've always felt that posting here implies you'll get responses that may or may not agree with you. If everyone posted and we only ever agreed with one another, it doesn't make sense for these boards to exist. It'd be boring af. I also debate irl with topics that are very heavier than they are here (racism, sexism, government corruption, etc.), so these debates seem sort of tame compared to those, though I can see why sometimes they might appear intense.
Though on a cool note, I've actually had my mind changed on a few things from people here. For example, I used to fervently dislike Dovewing, but now I've mellowed a lot on her character (obviously not much, as people can attest to from my posts, but still). Oddly, I've begun disliking Mothwing more after talking in threads about her lol Another character I've gained perspective on is Twigbranch. People have helped me see her motivations better, so that's given me a new view on her. There's a few other characters where my mind hasn't been exactly changed entirely on them, but definitely challenged how I initially viewed them, and maybe even swayed my opinion. I enjoy it a lot.

I debate because it's just flat out fun! I just like doing it, nothing else to it. Sometimes I do see a new perspective or get pointed to a quote that I may have totally forgotten.
I actually rather dislike threads that are basically just an opinion each post with no relation to each other because at that point, where's the interaction? It might as well just be a poll.

I don't like debating anymore, because I've already heard everything there is to say to just about everything. I've been around on the Warriors forums for ten years. I've gone through every topic you could think of, and after a while it gets tired. If I say, "I don't like Ivypool" or whatever for example, I already know what people who disagree with that statement think. They like her because they think she's well developed, smart, interesting, caring, loyal, or something along those lines. All Ivypool debates are the same. The people who hate her feel one similar way, the people who love her all feel the similar way. Same thing with just about every character and topic in this series. I've seen it all before, and I just don't feel like going through the motions again when it's the same thing every time. It just goes in circles. This may sound stuck up, but that's how I feel. And before you say, "Don't post then." I barely do.

Debates can gradually change views as well. Like sometimes a few days later after I read/participate a debate, I would rethink stuff like "huh, maybe JayXHalf Moon is somewhat a cliche opposites attract trope that changes one for the better, well I still love them". So I think the educational part of debates makes it awesome.

Surprisingly I've actually changed my opinion over certain things quite a few times thanks to debates. For example, Jayfeather used to be my fav of the three, now I think he's just the least unlikable and is trashy like his siblings, wasted potential all around. I used to like Crowfeather and hated Breezepelt, but now that's pretty much switched. I couldn't stand Ashfur, but now I'm indifferent toward him, heck I even might like him. And I couldn't tolerate Rowanstar and his incompetence as a character until later when on in the series and after reading about him more. Now I tolerate, borderline like him, but ya know. Opinions can change, just because you have one, doesn't mean you're incapable of changing your mind. No one is forcing you to, you're free to your own opinion. But every opinion can be complex, and some just aren't that deep and honestly don't have to be.
However, there's a difference between having an opinion and having a wrong opinion.
Say, for example, you don't like Firestar as a character. That's fine. That's your opinion. But then you say, you don't like Firestar as a character because he's a gary stu, which is lmao...the most false thing I've ever heard about his character thrown around. Considering how many times he's broken the warrior code for Pete's sake. But yeah, again, you're welcome to your own opinions, but there is such thing as a blatantly wrong one too. Just because you say the sky is yellow, doesn't mean it is.

I don't really do debates, so...I can't say for sure if debates change minds or not. To me, though, debates are discussions of people's different opinions and how they respond to those opinions.

It's really fun, and personally I am totally open to changing my mind (at least I think I am). If someone presents an argument that is stronger than my own, chances are I'll agree. I'm pretty flexible.
