I've been thinking about her all week for some reason and I rarely do that anymore with characters in the series. Since I could only remember that she was Onestar's mate and she went on the beaver journey I looked into her more and she was... pretty chill. Like super chill. She wasn't just respectful to anyone and everyone no matter where they were from or who they were but she actively tried to break up fights and encourage her clanmates to avoid conflicts. She's an angel on earth.
In fact, the only time she's seen talking crossly about anyone was, ironically, Onestar, after he had died and she was furious with him. I mean I don't blame her- even if I wasn't necessarily upset that my husband had a prior family... I'd still want to know beforehand and it'd suck being lied to.
And idk, I don't know how to feel about she being his mate. On one hand it kinda makes sense- before Onestar went south he, too, was kind to everyone no matter who they were- maybe a bit too friendly- but it makes sense that they'd originally have a lot in common. However it could be that, due to him originally being her mentor, he simply taught her how to be that way. But even if that's true, teaching and example only go so far and it's clear that she's just naturally that one way or another.
But over all what bugs me the most is not knowing why, despite Onestar's drastic change in personality, she remained his mate despite them suddenly being complete opposites. It could just be poor writing, but honestly I'd say Whitetail is the most consistently written character in WindClan- while some flip flop between hostile one day and friendly another, they seemed to know Whitetail's character pretty well and stuck to it perfectly. They clearly knew that Onestar was a massive dushe now to the other clans and at the same time clearly knew that Whitetail was extremely friendly to everyone- yet purposely mentioned how they were sharing a den one time and perminantly confirming their relationship.
And really, we'll never really know cause their relationship wasn't really talked about despite eventually throwing Heathertail in as their kit later on. And as far as I know she doesn't appear much in Crowfeather's Trial. Did she still love him because she kept believing that the former him was still inside him? Was he willing to confide in her and give up his persona when he was around her? Or did she just keep hoping he'd go back to his old self one day? Cause everything we've seen of her is that she hates hostility- especially superficial hostility and so you'd think the new Onestar would drive her crazy.
But, alas in OOTS is when their relationship is confirmed Onestar is showed to be often at his worst with the exception of AVOS of course where he got infinitely worse.
So it's like... baffling. What did she see in him? What did she know that we don't? Driving me crazy...
