So, we know from DotC that the Clans have borders because of Clear Sky's obsession to make sure no one died like Fluttering Bird did. Once he realized his wrongdoings, he promised that there wouldn't be anymore guards at the borders.
And then a little while later, it's Gray Wing who suggests that the groups should stay separate due to the circumstances at the time.
And it seems like this just became the norm ever since. Yet throughout the series, we've seen the Clans work very well together whenever it's necessary. So, do you think the borders should just be done away with (not necessarily have the Clans be one big Clan, but just have them be less restricted at least, similar to how things initially were) or are you okay with them having borders?

I think they should go back to the way they were in DOTC/MFV. It would have made more sense as a plot to restore the Clans to what they originally were, especially with the return of SkyClan. It feels like every arc has tried to drive home this point. They are apart yet United.
Separated groups are needed, DOTC shows this, but they should still work together. Patrols should mostly be used just to make sure enemies like rogues, foxes and badgers haven't strolled into their territories, and to share news between Clans outside of gatherings. I really liked how in the MFV manga we see that the clans have no problem with other clan cats visiting eachother casually, instead of guarding their camps with such hostility. As long as they are not hunting on another clan's land, they should be allowed peacefully.
That being said, squabbles would obviously happen - it's natural. But the other Clans should intervene more like we saw in Wind vs Sky.

I just feel like there’d be more understanding if borders were relaxed. The clans have developed such twisted views of each other due to their lack of exposure that just getting to know each other outside of the rather filtered and biased gatherings would be good for them. Sure things wouldn’t change overnight, and I bet there would be a generational difference with Ivypool and Breezepelt awkwardly avoiding each other but their kids chatting casually- but over time it would be an improvement.
I mean think about it- at least half of the warrior code is the result of strict borders- clans start considering trespassers as dangerous and an us vs them mentality brews, resulting in frequent fights, ending inter clan relationships, and further codes delegating the laws of battle and how old you have to be to fight. Deputies started becoming leader instead of kin when kin weren’t good enough at forming battle plans- and several unwritten codes could be linked as well.
And I mean- considering it’s called the Warrior code, it’s pretty self explanatory, it’s the code of cats who fight other “civilized” cats like them- they don’t follow it when fighting other wild animals or even rogues. Sure it includes some other codes like taking care of clanmates and not wasting food, but the majority of it either relates to is a result of strict borders.

Like sylveon said, they should revert to how borders were in the MFV manga period: still there, but much more casual visits to other Clans. It's simpler that way. I thought this would happen by the end of AVOS.

I see no problem with the borders the way they are. To change them now, after all this time, would cause infinitely more problems than it would solve. There would be the types of cats who are not limited by morality but simply by physical boundaries who would now have nothing stopping their anger or evil. There would simply be mass confusion on all fronts. Half of the Code would become meaningless. The fact that the borders simply stayed, after Clear Sky's crazy rule was over, is natural and very good.
While perhaps eventually things would even out, in the short term there would be nothing but chaos.

I want the series to end with each Clan intact, but with peace & understanding between them, to the point where there are open borders and cats can choose to settle down in the Clan that best fits them. Cats who enjoy swimming live in "RiverClan," cats who prefer the open moor live in "WindClan." It just makes sense. I hope we're gearing up for that but I don't have my hopes too high. :-P

Honestly I hope this is what TBC leads to by the end of the last book. No borders, and causal visits to other Clans, etc. Kind of like what Sundance mentioned in their post.
