SPIDERFANG || TERRITORY The black-and-white tom couldn't help the pang of hurt that clenched his heart as Fawnleap hurried away from him, and his tail drooped til it hit the floor. He sighed, watching her run further and further away from him, never taking his eyes off her. Maybe it's just not gonna work, he thought, dismayed, does she even like me? Like, at all? Spiderfang glanced sideways at Wolfthorn and Ravenpaw, and with a flick of his tail he beckoned the two to follow him as he also picked up the pace til he broke into a run. His pace was loping, his long legs allowing him to gain ground rather quickly, and soon he caught sight of Fawnleap again through the undergrowth. He chased after her, forcing himself to go faster, honing in on her scent and the sight of her leading him on. He wished she'd slow down for him: maybe she'd run by his side, their pelts brushing, scents merging. In my dreams, he chastised himself, sneering at his own thoughts. He glanced briefly over his shoulder to make sure Wolfthorn and Ravenpaw were following; he wanted to actually do some real mentoring today.

Wolfthorn Wolfthorn rolled her eyes as Spiderfang just watched Fawnleap run away. “Spiderfang?” The tom suddenly broke into a run, and Wolfthorn followed after. She dashed forward, keeping Ravenpaw at her side. Her fluffy tail streamed behind her, flowing like a leaf on the wind. It felt good to stretch her powerful muscles.

Fawnleap skidded to a halt, panting heavily. As a well tuned warrior runs didn’t usually take so much out of her but the hot weather and her thick dark coat were certainly making it hard. The she cat flicked her tail and turned to the rest of the patrol “should we split up for a little while?” Fawnleap stretched as she continued “Wolfthorn and I will go one way if that’s okay, I suppose you would want to get some mentoring in with Ravenpaw” Fawnleap twitched her ears at Spiderfang. ================================================================ The little tabby kit huffed but agreed anyway, he could sense that dawnpelt was covering something up but he didn’t really care in all honesty. Acornkit was just looking for something to occupy his itchy paws with.

Wolfthorn Wolfthorn slowed as Fawnleap skidded to a halt ahead of her. She trotted up to the senior warrior, breathing a little abnormally, but not quite panting. She liked to think she had good stamina. Wolfthorn responded to Fawnleap before Spiderfang could. “Yes, I think that’s a good idea,” Wolfthorn said a little passively aggressively, annoyed Fawnleap wouldn’t address her as well. I guess he is an older warrior, but it doesn’t mean young cats get to be tossed to the side.

Spiderfang winced at Wolfthorn's passive-aggressive tone, and was quick to nod his head in agreement. "Yes, that sounds fine," he mewed rather stiffly, mostly as a result of the awkward situation, "as long as Ravenpaw is alright with it."

Sleekmoon Sleekmoon dipped her head to Honeyslip padded away. She picked up one of her own soft, wide white paws (perfect for stalking!). Maybe I should’ve volunteered, Sleekmoon pondered. Sleekmoon was notorious for her silent steps, but that’s not to say Honeyslip wasn’t a good stalker. And... Sleekmoon had sort of maybe kind of been hoping she’d do a lot of this herself, to show the clan her warrior skills. I’ll lead the hunt, it’ll be fine. Sleekmoon reassured herself. She drew her tongue over one of her rough, pink pads, waiting patiently for Honeyslip to return.
Lightningfin Lightningfin gave his sister a reassuring smile when she volunteered. When she walked off, he stood and stretched his long legs. They were still a little sore after their race, but felt good. He paused for a moment, unsure of what to do, then unsheathed his claws, seeing them sink into the ground. Seems like they’re getting a little long. Lightningfin liked to have longer claws then usual, which made fishing easier, but if they got too long, they were quite uncomfortable. He padded over to a nearby tree and reared up, scraping his claws across the rough bark in order to dull them. I wonder how long Honeyslip will be, Lightningfin thought to himself, Sleekmoon’s cool ‘n all, but she seems like... she’s planning something. He paused to glance back at the young molly, who was grooming her paw. Hmm, probably something mysterious. Lightningfin resumed his scratching, Sleekmoon’s just mysterious like that.

Honeyslip tiptoed around to the other side of the tree, keeping track of the strong scent of rabbit. It got weaker as she pawed away from the first hole, but picked up again as she neared the undergrowth. She found a hole smaller than the one Sleekmoon saw; the sound of squeaking wasn't as loud here. Honeyslip continued around the perimeter, as rabbits usually had two or three more holes. Almost directly across the clearing from the hole she found was another one, hidden underneath a bush. She kept their locations in her head, then padded back to the other warriors. "There's two across from each other; one over there," she said, flicking her tail in each direction, "and another beneath that hazel bush."

Sleekmoon Sleekmoon listened intently to Honeyslip’s report. She thought for a moment, then said, “We’ll scare them from the main hole and the one beneath the bush. I’ll take the other hole they’ll be attempting to escape from. Lightningfin, you take the main hole and Honeyslip, you can take the bush one.” Sleekmoon paused to let the order sink in before saying, “You two get in position first.”
Lightningfin Lightningfin nodded to the mollies and padded off to his hole. It was the largest one. It reeked with the smell of rabbit. Lightningfin crouched in front of the hole, waiting for the signal. His belly grumbled in protest, Go! Catch one now! A delicious, juicy rabbit!, but he suppressed his hunger and resisted the urge. He kept his long ears pricked, intent on doing everything right.

Honeyslip nodded to Sleekmoon. The other she-cat normally didn't talk so much, but she always had a great eye for strategy, battle or hunting. She hurried back to the bush with quick but light steps, then slipped underneath the bush beside the hole, where the scent was strongest. She peered out to Sleekmoon with bright blue eyes, awaiting a signal. This was a great chance to get a lot of prey if they pulled this off.

Spidertail reached the nursery to stand in front of Dawnpelt and Acornkit. Her ears pricked as she heard the queen mention her name. "Gossiping about me, hm?" she asked jokingly, then looked down at her little grandson. "It looks like Dawnpelt is boring the fur off of you." Her gaze was still warm as she turned back to the queen. She definitely had less than a moon to go before her kits came. Spidertail could remember how excited she was before Nightrose was born... but also incredibly bored.

Sleekmoon Sleekmoon waited for the siblings to get in position then circled around to the hole where the rabbits would be scared out. She found it fairly easily, and saw it was the perfect hole; small enough for only one rabbit at a time. Her fur tingled with anticipation. She could see Lightningfin’s bright golden pelt through the trees, and condo scent Honeyslip ducked under a bush nearby. She focused on the hole, staring into its rabbit-y depths. Finally, she gave the signal: “Now!”
Lightningfin Lightningfin saw Sleekmoon slink towards where Honeyslip said the hole was. She seemed to find it, stopping in front of a spot blocked by undergrowth. His eye met hers for a moment, though Lightningfin couldn’t tell what her expression was. He dipped his head in response, hoping she knew he was ready. After a few heartbeats, she yowled the signal. He ducked his head into the hole and shrieked, making sure the entire hole was blocked. He saw a stampede of rabbits dashing towards him, their eyes glazed with fear. As soon as they saw him, they spun around and dashed through another tunnel, though a young stray rabbit came straight for him. He lashed out and killed it swiftly in surprise, and tossed it to the side to continue guarding the hole.

Honeyslip waited patiently for the signal and gave a little jump when Sleekmoon called out. She watched Lightningfin shriek, then fixed her eyes on her own hole. She kept her head away from the opening so none of the rabbits would see her. At first, she couldn't hear anything, but then the thumping of rabbit feet grew near. One rabbit popped out, and she quickly shot forward and bit its neck, then moved it to the side. Another one shot out soon after, this one smaller and younger, and she had to follow it a tail length or two before she could grab it and kill it.

Sleekmoon After she yowled, she heard Lightningfin’s shriek. She waited patiently for several heartbeats before she heard the thrum of the rabbits’ paws. They began dashing through the hole, not noticing her quick claws in their blind fear. She began lashing out strategically, trying her best to get as many as she could. To her dismay, a few swift ones slipped away. That’s fine, Sleekmoon thought in a pause of the flow, they’ll make more. That’s probably the smartest thing to do: to let a few go. She looked around at the large amount of fresh-kill scattered about, then let the last lucky ones escape. She called out a meow to let Lightningfin and Honeyslip know there were no more.
Lightningfin Lightningfin didn’t get any more rabbits coming towards his hole. Every few moments he hissed or growled to direct any stragglers towards another exit, but otherwise, his hole was calm. He only heard the distant squeaks and squeals from the other holes. Soon, he heard Sleekmoon’s meow. He recoiled from the hole, assuming that meant ‘stop’. Lightningfin ruffled his fur and trotted over to where Sleekmoon was. His face lit up when he saw the amount of prey, “Wow! This is... wow. We’ll need several trips to get all of this back to camp!” Finally, StarClan has shown us a light at the end of the tunnel! Or, a rain at the end of the tunnel. Some water would be nice.

Honeyslip didn't have any more rabbits either; she figured they must have all went to Sleekmoon's hole. When the warrior meowed to them, she slowly crawled out from under the bush and padded back to her and Lightningfin. Her tail lifted into the air with pride. "We did it!" she purred, her voice still soft but excited. This prey will last us a while, at least! She looked toward Sleekmoon, eyes shining. "Good job finding the den for us."

Sleekmoon Sleekmoon, despite herself, became overcome with embarrassment from the praise. “Yes, this worked out perfectly.”She groomed her bushy chest fur to hide her growing smile. She could just imagine leader her patrol back to camp, loaded with prey! The senior warriors may let her eat with them! She shone with pride, and it hadn’t even happened yet. Sleekmoon composed herself quickly and glanced around at the piles, “Let’s grab as much as we can hold, bury the rest, then head back to camp. We’ll have to make a few trips.” She padded over to the side of the rabbits’ hole and began digging out a pit to tuck away the prey in. We have to go back for that squirrel, too. Sleekmoon took a moment to smooth her ruffled fur.
Lightningfin Lightningfin grinned at his sister, “Yeah, that was great Sleekmoon.” Sleekmoon stayed as calm as ever. She directed them to dig out holes to hide the prey, which was smart, because even though they were definitely done with hunting for the day, this prey needed to be preserved. As Sleekmoon padded to once side of the hollow, he went to the other, beckoning Honeyslip with a flick of his long tail.
