Lucy has been in the room when Ryder woke up, watching some towels that she had used to clean the blood up outside. She had been awake since she heard him arrive and it was really quite late at night now. She turned her head as she heard him groan and stepped back over to him. She reached over and put a hand on his chest. "I wouldn't move," she told him seriously, taking on her doctor's tone. "I don't know who you are, and I didn't look at your face, but as soon as you can walk I want you gone. I don't want to be known for helping murderers."

Lucky hesitated. She did recognise that voice, but she didn't want to believe it. "B-because I'm a doctor," she responded, her voice shaking slightly. "And you're my patient and you were dying." She shuffled closer to him, running out the town she had been washing into a small basin on the table. She placed the cool cloth on his face and wiped it away gently. "And I can't have someone die on me when I can prevent it." She said seriously, pointy not looking at his face as she adjusted the towel over his forhead.

Ryder turned his head with great effort to look up at the woman. Though his vision wasn't clear, he could still make out a few details of her face. A face he hadn't seen in so long, yet he still remembered perfectly.
His own face hadn't changed much. His hair was a bit longer than it use to be, but his face remained clean cut. No trace of a beard could be seen. Dark lashes threatened to cover his blue eyes as he fought to stay awake.
Without thinking, he reached up and weakly grabbed her wrist. His lips parted as if to speak. However, the man never got a chance to say anything before a coughing fit raked his body. Ryder held her wrist a bit tighter as his body tensed. His body jerked in the struggle of his lungs ridding themselves of the blood that had collected in them due to his injuries. When he finally stopped, he laid there, limp and wheezing for breath, close to unconsciousness once more.

Lucy started when he grabbed her wrist and immediately went to yank it away when she looked at him. She let out a choked sound when he started coughing and tried to pull way. "Ryder..." Her voice caught. "Ryder ... Ryder ... why?" She demanded, reeling back when it actually hit her that this man, the assassin, was her best friend. Her fiance. Someone who had died to her so so long ago.
She pulled her wrist away from his low loosing grip and she returned to the sink to get another towel. She used this to gently wipe away at his mouth. She placed the towel on his head and touched his cheek. Her hands were trembling. "Rest." She ordered softly.

Lucy shushed him gently, eyes starting to pool with tears. No, no no. She wouldn't allow herself to get close to him. Not again. Not after everything that had happened - she had a funeral for him! She had gotten over him. He was a distant, happy memory. She loved him for everything that he had been and now he was this? The very thing that everyone hated about this town. She choked back a sob. "Sleep, Ryder." She whispered to keep her voice from cracking. "I'm here. I'm not going anywhere." Her hands were still trembling as she tried to make sense of what had happened. She shook her head to herself squeezing her eyes shut. He was just another patient. He was just another patient and nothing else.

(mhm.)
Lucy had been awake all night, tending to Ryder. She was almost asleep on her feet as she moved back to pull the thin blanket back up to his shoulders that his thrashing had moved. She brushed his cheek and sighed, closing her eyes as she moved back over to the sink, picking up a glass of water to drink. She had stayed for long periods of time before, so couldn't say that she wasn't used to it, but the strain of seeing Ryder again felt like she had stayed up for nearly a week. She stepped over to check on him again. During the morning, his fever had gone down, and though he was still quite warm, he wasn't in danger of dying anymore. Lucy stared at him for a few moments before turning back to the sink to get a glass of water for when he woke up.

An hour before sunrise, Ryder had stilled in his sleep. Since his fever had broken, he was able to get maybe twenty minutes of restful sleep before he woke. He opened his eye, which was easier to do this time around, and gazed at the ceiling. He was a little dizzy from the blood loss, but for the most part, his head was clear. Slowly, he tried to lift his head, but the effort was a little much. So he groaned and tried to look around the room he was in. It did't take long for his sights landed on Lucy.

She was still trembling slight, now it was more from the lack of sleeo and stress than it was from seeing Ryder again. As professional as ever, she helped him sit up and silently offered him a glass of water.

"You were dead." She said cooly, but there was no hiding the tremble in her voice. "You are dead. Buried both literally and figuartivly in my mind." She didn't look athim, refused to let him see how weak she was because of this. "Youre just another patient. Nothing more."

Lucy flinched at his words, even though she had tried to stop herself from doing it. She curled her hands into fists and looked away. She looked like she was going to say something when there was a knock at the front door. She pointed him. "Stay were you are. The last thing I need is to be arrested because of you." Her voice was cold as she left the room.
There were guards at the door and she half closed it so they couldn't see inside. "How may I help you gentlemen?"

Lucy conversed with the guards for a short time. One got irate for a moment and demanded they let them in, but Lucy held her ground very strongly and ordered them to leave her property. They did, although with some reluctance and muttered threats. She came back into the kitchen nursing her wrist. "I put whatever you had on you over there," She nodded to floor where there was a locked chest. A key was above it on the counter. She stepped over to the cabinet by the kitchen and pulled out a roll of gauze. She wrapped it tightly around her wrist, using her teeth to pull it tight. She tested her fingers, satisfied that her hand wasn't broken. "You can leave whenever you want. They won't be back for a few hours." She was pointedly not looking at him. *shamelessly promotes self* wcrpforums.com/thread/10390/ga

She sneered at the floor, forcing her anger at the guards to overcome how she felt about his concern, "what do you think they awere looking for?" She asked, voce a liitle snippy. "Of corse they tried to frce thier way in. Despite my tilte, i am still a woman, no matter what I do for this town."

(It's okay!)
Ryder frowned and nodded. He had guessed the guards were searching for him after he had finished asking his question. With a groan, he pushed himself off the table and onto his feet. For a moment, he swayed, dizziness washing over him as he gripped the edge of the table. It took a moment for him to clear his head. Once he had recovered, he turned to her. "I am sorry, Lucy," the man said. "I've caused you more than enough trouble, and I promise that you will not suffer by showing me mercy. I will repay you, if you will let me."

For a moment, it looked as though she was going to help him stand, but she decided against it. She stared at him for a short while consiering what he had said. Her resolve soon crimbled and her shoulders slumped. "You can stay," she said cautiously, "until you recover enough to go out on your own." She eyed him, tilting her head, "for now, you can sleep in father's room. He is away and won't be back for some time. I need to retire. I'm almost asleep on my feet."

"That's why you what, Ryder? That's why you left me? Faked your own death because you wanted to protect me? As fragile as I look, I am not helpless." She glared at him, deciding I drop it for the sake of her health. "I cannot deal with this right now. Leave if you want, but you won't make it far in the condition that you're in." Without another word she turned and left the kitchen.

She leant down from where she was, halfway up the stairs. "They won't come back for at least 12 hours. I may not want you here Ryder as my old fiance, but I will keep you here as my patient. You are not strong enough to go running around the city in your condition, and if you are caught, it is likely that you will not survive an attack by the guards." She said seriously. "Now, I need to sleep before I pass out. I don't care what you do, Ryder, but as my patient, you are to stay and recover. At least until you can actually walk."

By the evening, Lucy had rested enough to emerge from her room. She defended down the stairs and stepped into the kitchen, staring to prepare a small meal.

Lucy sighed upon seeing no trace of her former fiance in the house. She would have called it a dream not for the bloody cloth left behind. She wondered if she had been too harsh with him and decided silently to herself, should she ever see him again, to make amends. She did miss him, very much. The betrayal, however, had cut deep and left a horrid scar. She knew that she would never be able to properly forgive him, but as much as she wanted to deny it, she still loved him.

"I'm glad to see you're eating," Ryder voiced as he appeared in the door way of the kitchen. He was fully dressed, and if it wasn't for his pale face, no one would have known he would have been injured.
Of course, the man hadn't simply walked out and left. He wanted to be sure that the woman he cared for wasn't going to have any lasting trouble with the guards after he did leave. It seemed only fair to make sure she was safe after she saved him from death. No, what he had been doing was searching for the mask he had dropped. Luckily, it fell off into one of her flower beds near the porch.
Now he offered a small smile, remembering a time when he would have stayed silent only to sneak up on her while cooking and hug her around the waist. He so badly wanted to do that now, but he knew better.
