I know a lot of people don't like his relationship with Yellowfang, and that Raggedstar is a very unpopular character because of his reputation in that relationship. Before Yellowfang's Secret even came out, Raggedstar was put out to be one of the best leaders Shadowclan ever had. (This was in Secrets of the Clans I believe.)
So I think what I'm asking here is why do you think he was portrayed as a great leader when, realistically, there was much more turmoil under the surface as far as his leadership and relationship with Yellowfang were concerned? Your opinions on this ship are welcome as well. Do you think he was directly abusive or manipulative in his relationship? Should he have ended up with Foxheart?

He was a good leader, the problem was his secret personal life that was a piece of shit and his bias in putting Brokentail in the deputy position.

He was an okay leader, but his personal life and bias was a major problem. His relationship with Yellowfang was a major thing here, especially when he appointed Foxheart as deputy just to make Yellowfang jealous (which is really dumb). Then he appointed his apprentice Cloudpelt deputy, a much better choice with good reasoning than Foxheart or the latter, Brokentail. He then appointed Brokentail to the deputy position because he was his son, and that doomed the Clans. You shouldn't let personal bias get in the way of how you run your Clan. It possibly puts the Clan in danger, and Raggedstar failed to see that until it was too late. That and, I don't feel like he listened to his medicine cat (Yellowfang) that much because of personal bias against her for "betraying" him.
