for some reason, my neighbor's cat hates me and it makes me rlly sad. i'm always really nice to him, but he just... doesn't like me. he'll come up to me and act like he wants attention (rubbing against me, meowing, purring) but whenever i try to actually pet him he hisses at me and scratches me and runs away. im just trying to be ur friend buddy.

okay i get it but maybe the cat's just skittish and getting used to you? one of my cats is skittish and does this sort of thing when she's getting used to a new person... like she approaches the person, kinda sniffs and gets up close to them, and then runs away when they start to pay any sort of attention to her (and this can go on... for a longggg time). idk if this makes you feel any better, but it might not be you, it might just be the cat's nature. also related, lmao (i was lowkey gonna post the meme by itself t b h but decided against it)

My best friends cat Lunar runs from me anytime I go to her house. I've known this cat for years, and at one point she would come close and just watch me (if I so much as looked at her too long she would dart off), but after a two year feud with my friend I've started going over briefly again but she doesn't even so much as cone out of hiding. Her other two cats like me, but Lunar is just skittish. Don't take it personally. It's pretty common

The cat does like you!! Cats dont come up and do that to just anyone. But not all cats actually like to be touched.
Think of the cat like a friend who doesnt like to be hugged. They are still your friend!
Instead of touching the cat, maybe try just bringing them a treat or something to play with.

Cats aren't very social animals. They would rather be sleeping or eating. Sometimes they're in the mood to be petted but they're just solitary. Now dogs on the other hand want attention almost all the time. They need human companionship, especially from their families. When I went to Europe a few years back my dog was very depressed. But you should've seen her when we came to pick her up from my dad's friend's house.

Yeah but those are your cats, that you are used to and they are used to ypu because they see you and themselves as being part of the same "clan", if you will. This other cat is not and probably just needs more time to warm up a little bit more is all.
Also just one more thing i want to add because its so untrue and bothers me a lot, cats are very loving when they want to be and its on their terms. They wouldnt "rather be sleeping or eating", when a cat likes you they make it known. Just. Not the same way dogs make it known, which is why people need to stop comparing cats to dogs.

THANK YOU finally someone who understands cat behavior!!! They are very social, very loving creatures. Not at all in the same way dogs are though. That's like comparing apples to corn.

Just because one animal expresses love in one way doesn't mean there's other ways other species express love
