Bear
He trotted happily through the forest, stumbling into a dark brown she-cat. "Sorry!" He exclaimed, as he backed away cautiously. She turned to face him. "It's alright." She said with a smile. "I'm Vixen." The she-cat, now known as Vixen, said. She had a rather friendly tone that made the tom trusting of her. "What are you doing out here all alone?" She purred, coming closer to him. "Hunting." He replied vaguely, keeping his distance. "I don't bite." Vixen stated, blinking her big eyes. "Could I join you?" She asked. Bear nodded, and led the way to his favorite hunting spot. "You two are new faces." A voice sounded from a nearby fence, a small and unassuming looking black, ginger and white mottled she-cat sitting on the grooved wood with calm eyes. Though she looked small, scars littered her shoulders and muzzle, and there was a ferocity in her eyes that was mellowed by cool calculation. Lybex peered down at Vixen and Bear, having been on one of her trips from the city to the more mellow Twolegplace where she had raised her kits moons ago. She licked a paw, crooning. "Are you hunting?"

Willowsong let out a quiet purr, happy that the young cats would be going with them. It would have weighed on her for moons knowing they left them out here to fend for themselves. "Pebble, Mist, you may watch us hunt but try and stay downwind from us to not alert the prey. Once you're back with the clan we can give you proper hunting lessons, but you might learn a thing or two from just watching us."
She trotted onward to the next two-leg fence, scenting the air for any nearby prey. Her ears perked as she saw a squirrel racing across the top of the fence. She stalked it from the ground hiding along the low brush, she waited patiently as it cleaned its paws before it leaped off the fence only a tail-length away. Willowsong pounced, landing square on the squirrel before it even had a chance to run. If there was anything that Willowsong was good at, it was hunting.

Skyflight took a deep breath, feeling much more at home now that she was high up in the air. She quickly spotted a few birds settled on an adjacent roof. She crouched taking in her surroundings. She would have to be quick and make sure she did not startle them until she was close otherwise, they would easily escape. Skyflight inched her way across the roof, before jumping across to the other side out of site of the birds. When she was sure they were all distracted, she darted over the top of the roof towards the birds, leaping through the air at the nearest one. She grinned as she landed on the sparrow, killing it quickly. Suddenly, she felt herself begin to slide on the roof, she had never been on such a strange sloped surface before. She yelped, pulling her sparrow with her. Skyflight caught herself by digging her claws into the shingles after she had slid down the roof a whole foxlength. She shook, heart pounding at the thought of sliding off the edge. Silvercloud stood up when she heard Skyflight yelp. She watched the edges of the roofs. "Skyflight? Are you alright?"

Sometimes it was better to have allies than enemies, even if she preferred to live and work alone. ╚═══━━━─── • ───━━━═══╝ Mist and Pebble both nodded their heads at the ThunderClan she-cat's instructions, keeping a few tail-lengths downwind of the two warriors. After watching Willowsong catch the squirrel, Pebble quietly mewed, "That's kinda like how you catch the mice, isn't it?"
"Sort of, but I try to get a little closer and make sure that it can't feel my pawsteps. I can't leap that far yet like she can, but one day I will."

Skyflight gathered herself before carefully picking her way back to the roof she had come from, sparrow in tow. Once her heart rate had slowed, she placed the bird down beside her and peered over the edge at Silvercloud. "I'm okay, I just didn't expect the top of that nest to be so slippery. I started to slide down it before I dug my claws in," she admitted her voice still shaking.

Silvercloud flicked her ear in guilt. She should've warned Skyflight. Before she had come to the clan, Silvercloud stayed off the twoleg nest roofs because her clawless paws couldn't get a grip on them. "I should've warned you. When you're ready, come on down. We've got a good haul already. We should check on those ThunderClan cats."

Skyflight shook her head, "It's okay Silvercloud, I should have been more cautious. I'll be down in a moment." She disappeared back over the ledge, picking up her sparrow and walking cautiously back towards the tree she had climbed up. With a big leap, she crossed the gap between the roof and the branch before rejoining Silvercloud on the ground. "Where do you think the Thunderclan cats went to hunt?"

Silvercloud ignored the pang in her chest at how easily Skyflight jumped down from the roof and climbed down the tree. She always tried to ignore the way it felt being the only cat in a climbing clan that couldn't climb. At least I can help here. Silvercloud looked up and down the alley at Skyflight's question. "They might have looked for those gardens we spoke of earlier. Let's back try and see if we can find their scent." She picked up the rat and headed back to where they entered the twoleggedplace at.

Skyflight nodded in agreement, unable to reply with the sparrow hanging from her jaws. She walked beside Silvercloud, looking more relaxed now that they were heading away from the heart of the twolegplace. She knew she would feel much better the second the stepped paw back under the comforting shade of the forest.

Ghostscreech had moved off to follow the scent of a blackbird, dropping into a hunter’s crouch as he stalked after it. As he neared the bird, he paused for a moment, watching as it pecked at the seeds on the ground. Ghostscreech suddenly lunged out at the bird, landing squarely on its back and biting its neck before it could give a warning cry to any other prey that could be in the area. Saying a quick thanks to StarClan, he picked the bird up and approached Willowsong, dropping it at his paws. “Nice catch.” He said to her before looking over at the two kits. Giving a flick of his ear, he picked the bird up and dropped it in front of Mist and Pebble, “Here, you two should eat something before we leave. It will feel like a long journey back to the forest if you don’t.” Ghostscreech mewed. He would just have to make sure he caught some more prey before they left to make up for the prey he gave them.

"Thank you!" Pebble mewed, indebted to the tom's kindness as he moved toward the bird. Mist gingerly joined him and together they tasted bird for the first time. Pebble found it to be delightfully bitter, a nice contrast to the typically sweet mice that they'd had for so long. The feathers were soft; as they began to eat, Pebble made sure to set several of them to the side-- new feathers for a new nest!
"This doesn't taste too bad," Mist noted. "It's a bit tart."
"Almost as bitter as the daisy leaves that Mouse had us chew into a paste for Ragweed before he died, remember?" Pebble replied.
"Were those daisy leaves?"
"Yes-- and Mouse made us put more in Ragweed's nest so his body would ache less." Pebble's eyes clouded over. "I miss that old tom."
"Well, he's gone now," Mist replied after swallowing the last bite of blackbird. She rose to her paws and gave each of them a good lick. "I think we're ready, Ghostscreech." Pebble nodded in agreement.

Willowsong smiled at Ghostscreech, her ears heating up at his praise. "Thank you, nice catch yourself. Stay with them for a moment, I will go find something else to bring back in place of their bird." She slipped away into the underbrush easily, returning with a plump vole several moments later. "That should be plenty of prey to bring back. Hopefully the other patrols were just as lucky."

Ghostscreech gave a nod as Willowsong slipped away to find something else and turned to watch as the kits finished eating the bird. Once the other warrior had returned and the kits had finished their bird, Ghostscreech stood up, moving to grab the two birds they had caught earlier, “Let’s hope so.” He responded to Willowsong as he unburied the birds, “If they did, then both of our Clans will eat well tonight.”

"How many Clans are there?" Pebble asked. "You mentioned ThunderClan and SkyClan. Are there more? And you mentioned a Lightningstar, too! That's a really cool name, by the way, Lightningstar-- as are Ghostscreech and Willowsong." He paused and turned to his littermate. "DO you think we'll get cool names, too?"
"Maybe instead of asking question after question, we could go to their camp and have our questions answered there," Mist mewed, irritably flicking her tail and ears. "You can't just dump questions on a cat and expect them to answer all at once-- that's mouse-brained."

Willowsong purred in amusement as she began to walk back towards the meeting point, once they had reached it she settled down and placed her vole beside her. She was surprised to see that they were the first to come back. She turned to face Pebble and Mist to begin explaining slowly, "There are five clans, Ghostscreech and I live in Thunderclan, led by Lightningstar. Ghostscreech is our deputy, second in command. Skyclan is led by Spiritstar with Whitesun as deputy. Neither of them accompanied the Skyclan patrol today, but some of their senior warriors are present. The other three clans are Riverclan, Shadowclan, and Windclan. Riverclan is led by Earthstar and Diamondheart, Shadowclan by Cedarstar and Cloudscar, and Windclan by Swiftstar and Sagefoot. Each clan has its own territory and specialties. I can explain more once we get back to camp, but if Lightningstar lets you stay, you will most likely get an apprentice name. You would be Mistpaw and Pebblepaw."

Ghostscreech dropped the two birds next to Willowsong’s vole and squirrel, glad to see that they already had a small pile growing. He could only hope that Featherfoot and Tigerpaw had as much luck as they did. Ghostscreech sat down next to the other warrior, taking a couple of minutes to groom his fur while they waited for the others to come back. Licking a paw and drawing it over his ear, the deputy looked over at Willowsong as she explained the concept of the five Clans to the kits, letting her do the talking. He doubted he would be able to explain it as well as she could.

"Why do they all have star in their names?" Mist asked, putting her first question forward. "Is it just a coincidence? Were they littermates given all the same part to their name? Maybe they were really close as kits?"
None of those options sat well with Pebble-- it couldn't have been a coincidence, and given that the Clans sounded like they had different cultures, they couldn't have been littermates or too close to one another. "I think there's another reason, but I'm not sure what," he mewed.

Willowsong giggled at Mist's question, their complete lack of knowledge of the clans quite charming to the young she-cat. It wasn't often that she met someone who hadn't heard of the clans before. "No, the leaders are not related. They had normal warrior names before they were leaders. When a cat becomes leader, they travel to our moonstone. A special stone that you can speak to our ancestors with, we call them Starclan. If Starclan accepts the cat as the new leader of the clan, they are granted nine lives and the ending -star to their name. Lightningstar's name used to be Lightningfur. If Ghostscreech were to become leader, his name would change to Ghoststar. Does that make sense? I'm sorry I know it's a lot to take in."

Both cats' eyes went wide. "Cats can really have nine lives?" Pebble mewed. "That sounds like a big responsibility."
"I wonder why every cat doesn't just get nine lives," Mist replied. "It'd certainly do most cats a lot of good and make it easier on families of cats." I wonder what it would take to get that far... Maybe... maybe if this works out, I could do that one day... I could keep Pebble safe for many more moons... Pebble, if he had known what his sister was thinking, would've disagreed entirely. Only certain cats deserve that kind of power, in his opinion.

Featherfoot brightened as Tigerpaw returned from beneath the bushes, just as he had instructed. He purred, placing down the second squirrel he had caught. “Yes you did! Just as we practiced, excellent job! Look at all the prey we’ll be bringing back today. I’d say it’s been quite a success. Let’s bring this back to Ghostscreech and the others.” He offered.

"We were fortunate." Ottermask nodded in agreement with Owlwhisker. "Fires don't effect our territory much, but if a flood happened..." He trailed off with a shake of his head. Looking up, Ottermask nodded to a fenceline a few houses down. He perked up when he saw it. "That's Shimmer's garden. Hopefully, she's outside today." "Oh, that would be dreadful." Owlwhisker murmured, not enjoying the idea. He quickly perked up seeing the fenceline that Ottermask had stated was Shimmer's. Owlwhisker was intrigued to meet her, and he decided to ask Littleshadow if she knew Shimmer when he got back to camp. For now though, he purred. "It's a nice day to be out, so maybe we have a good chance. Does she come outside alot, or does she prefer to stay in with her twolegs?" (It's been so long that I'm going to go past the earlier conversation, pretend that Earth commented on the fire and stuff) Earthstar stopped and looked up at the fenceline, quickly recognizing it from the last time he was here. He glanced at Ottermask when Owlwhisker asked about her habits. It would surely be unfortunate if they came all this way for her to not show up. How does Ottermask know she won't go and leave one day? he wondered. He knew some Twolegplace cats were former kittypets who had escaped from their dens.

Our ancestors don’t just give out nine lives to any cat in the Clans, it’s a right reserved only for the true leaders. To be a leader means taking care of the Clan’s members and protecting them with all nine lives StarClan gifts them.” The deputy added, flicking his ear. Ghostscreech still held doubt that he would be the leader ThunderClan needed, but he trusted Lightningstar’s judgment in him. He just hoped that he would be ready when the time came.

Both of them turned towards the voice, a bit startled. Vixen examined the she-cat, studying her every detail. She was rather small, though her voice was rather loud. Bear tilted his head to the side, partially puzzled. "I was." Bear said calmly, looking over at Vixen. The two had just met, though he trusted Vixen a bit more than this new companion. Vixen relaxed a little, stretching and sitting back on her haunches. Bear spoke up first, taking a step forward. "I've been here awhile." He said vaguely. In fact, he had been there all his life. He mostly remained unnoticed, blending in with the shadows. He liked it that way. He wasn't willing to reveal to the she-cat he had been abandoned at birth quite yet. Vixen yawned, as if she was growing bored of the conversation. "My turn." She said, stepping forward. "I was born in the forest. My parents are kittypets that escaped, but they're gone now." She said, a bit solemn. "We don't even know your name." Bear said, suddenly.

Willowsong nodded, "Having nine lives allows leaders to sacrifice themselves in order to save their clanmates, a sign of a cat who truly deserves the nine lives given to them. Many leaders do not tell their clan when they lose a life, but Lightningstar has been our leader for many many moons. Since before I was born! I'm sure he has given away multiple lives in order to protect our clanmates." Her eyes flickered over to Ghostscreech for a moment, wondering if the leader had shared with his deputy how many lives he had given up. As much as it pained her to think about, Willowsong was sure Lightningstar didn't have many left.

Firepaw stalked after what would soon be his third catch of the day, a plump dove that could feed the entire nursery. The SkyClan apprentice had already caught a squirrel and a mouse, and he didn’t want to let the ThunderClan apprentice show him up on the first conjoined hunting patrol. Firepaw had already missed the first few birds he had come across and he didn’t want to miss this time. He lunged out a bit too soon, and the dove started flying off, letting out a warning cry. Hissing in frustration, Firepaw launched into the air and sunk his claws into the dove, bringing it back down to the ground and quickly biting its neck. Why was it so hard for him to catch one stupid bird? He was a SkyClan apprentice, for StarClan’s sake! He could almost hear his brother and sisters laughing at his clumsy catch.

He bunched his muscles and sprang up on the fenceline to look down into Shimmer's garden. It was just as he expected it to be. A standing stone Shimmer called a bird bath, flowers lined the fenceline. A willow tree. Ottermask blinked when he didn't spot Shimmer in her usual sunning spot. He looked back at Earthstar and Owlwhisker. "I don't see her yet, but she might be inside. I can probably get her attention if I get close enough."
