I think of fanfiction like a garbage dump. There are piles and piles of garbage, but a few rare and wonderful gems mixed in. You gotta dig through the garbage to find the gems.

Yeah, there's definitely some..interesting fanfics out there. I know I've seen my good share. Just try and block it out and maybe read something fun to distract yourself from it.

I think of fanfiction like a garbage dump. There are piles and piles of garbage, but a few rare and wonderful gems mixed in. You gotta dig through the garbage to find the gems. it's true. i've read some truly gorgeous fic (like, so good that i hope to this day that the author has pursued a career as an author fulltime), but i've also read some painfully written fic. the trick is to learn to recognize when it's gonna get ugly + to recognize what kind of content you enjoy in a fic and what kind you dislike. personally, i hate band aus and most college aus, so i avoid those, but i deliberately look for fantasy aus, especially the kinds involving mermaids, dragons, pirates, and the like. a good indicator is often the grammar, even in a drabble or crack fic. if it looks and feels rushed, not a good sign. if it's cleaned up, if there's some sharp humor, if it actually feels like someone put love and care into writing it, that's a good sign to proceed. also, if the author puts tags on the work, look at those. don't be like me, who failed to pay attention and walked blindly into a fic that featured the death of a main character in one of my otps. that was a mistake. i feel regret. but yeah, check the tags, because those can give you a heads up of what you're getting.

It makes me kind of sad that so many people associate fanfiction with smut, and it has a negative reputation because of that. But they're not wrong in assuming that's what the majority of fanfiction is about. There's definitely a heavy demand for it. Personally, I don't get it. (I am a very bitter gen fic writer.)

I read a fanfic where one character was just feeling the others head of dirty hair and it was weird i think the character was just FACINATED with the fact that the other didn't wash his hair Just wtc. I dont understand humanity anymore. Actaully I thought that long ago.

I literally have like 3 good fanfictions that I love. They're all three aus and two are for the same fandom but the weird part is that they're such aus that they have basically nothing to do with the fandom... and also it's not even a fandom I like. But I LOVE the fanfics. It's a bizarre situation.

Fanfic gets a bad rep. I honestly only read fan fiction through recommendations of good fic these days. It's much safer than digging through the Internet by yourself. It is a learning experience though, learning all the code words and lingo, and figuring out what you like.
AO3 also has the best tag system ever. Therefore, it's the only fic site I willingly browse through freely. Although half of it just seems to be smut, people are good with saying what is involved with their story. So if I see, PWP, I know to stay away for example. People are also seemingly more mature there for some reason.
Though crack fics like My Immortal and Starkits Prophecy hold a special place in my heart for how funny they are.

It's difficult weeding out the good from the bad, but as a long time fanfiction reader/writer, Ive got some tips if you ever want to start reading them again
