Hey, my friend Sanity and I are working on writing an original novel and we'd be curious to know if anyone here would be interested in the concept? The main character is a pansexual neurodivergent (written by an author who is pansexual and neurodivergent) princess with fire magic, who works with a group of her royal friends + her Royal Advisor in order to end the unfair discrimination against the shapechanger race in her world. The rest of the main cast is also queer. (My avatar is Sanity's drawing of the main character, used with permission)
Here's a small preview of chapter one!
Laurella’s room was not what one would call lavish. On the contrary, it was quite bare. It contained only a double bed, always neatly made, a writing desk, and a bookshelf stocked with texts the princess wanted to keep close by. Even the walls had very little to draw the gaze, plastered with red wallpaper that blended in with the rest of the palace and a clock, as well as mahogany door leading to her private bathroom.
Indeed, the decor of Laurella’s room was as quiet as the Crown Princess herself. She would only appear at public events a few times a year, the most recent of these being the celebration of her seventeenth birthday a few months ago, the day she became an adult in the eyes of her kingdom. Even then, she had only spoken when necessary, preferring to keep her thoughts hidden behind a polite smile, escaping to her room when the party was over to reread a well-loved fairytale.
Reading had always been more appealing to Laurella than any form of social interaction. The palace staff were all well acquainted with her, from butlers to tutors, but none could say they had formed any deep connection with the future queen. They’d hum and err when asked about her, eagerly changing the topic to be about her little sister, bright and bubbly Catalina. Despite her great importance to the Fire and Lava Kingdom, Laurella was not an individual many liked to discuss.
Still, she enjoyed the solitude. Hiding from the world with a book was paradise to her, and she dreaded the day she would have to abandon her stories and rule as queen. Until then, she whiled the weeks away with tales of gallant heroes, and learned all she could about the history of the kingdoms of Vaelia. For the most part, she was left alone, even by her beloved parents, King Ignatius and Queen Ashalla.
Today should have been a day like any other. It was just before noon, and Laurella was enjoying a story about a witch prince who ran away from an arranged marriage when a knock sounded. Laurella blinked owlishly for a moment, before slowly putting down her book and making her way over to the door. “Who is it?”
“Augustus, Your Highness,” an elderly, male voice replied. “I apologize for the short notice, but there are some visitors from other kingdoms your parents would like you to meet. Please get yourself ready; I will come by again in ten minutes to escort you to the dining hall.”
