Prologue
Anguished yowls echoed eerily through a marshy clearing. Silhouettes of cats could be seen watching anxiously nearby, while the moonโs reflection danced on the rippling puddles of water across the soggy ground. A dark ginger she-cat dashed out of thickly woven reed den, her paws skittering across the wet clearing as she made her way under the roots of an old willow tree. Tucking some herbs under her chin, she quickly paced back to the reed den. Inside, a white she-cat with beautiful long fur was panting heavily. Her belly was swollen with her unborn kits, and she struggled as spasms racked her body. Pressing the leaves to the queenโs muzzle, the she-cat gently murmured for her to eat them. Obeying weakly, the laboring queen lapped them up. A huge spasm shook her like a wave then, and a kit slid out. The ginger she-cat quickly nipped the sac and began to lick life into the kit. However no mew ever escaped its tiny lips. This kit was stillborn. There was no time to mourn just yet, however, as another spasm pushed out the second kit. Desperately hoping this one would not meet the same fate as itsโ littermate, the she-cat nipped the sac and licked it heavily. Tiny squeals of life escaped itsโ lungs after a few tense moments, and the she-cat gave a sigh of relief. The queen collapsed weakly, breathing heavily. She tried to turn her muzzle towards her newborn kits, but couldnโt gather her strength to do so. โHow are they?โ she rasped finally. Worry for her precious babies pounding in her chest.โAre they okay?โ Reluctant to tell the queen about the stillborn kit, she gently nosed the live one towards her belly to feed. โYou have one healthy son, with beautiful white fur like yours.โ โAnd the other one?โ Gently the she-cat grabbed the lifeless kit and laid it near the queenโs side. โIโm sorry Snowblossom, but your daughter was born without any life.โ A wail of grief escaped the queenโs throat as she gazed at her lifeless daughter. Gently she pulled the kit closer to her and buried her muzzle in their silver tabby fur. The still living kit let out squeaks of defiance, struggling to feed as his motherโs side heaved with sobs. โHush little one,โ the she-cat murmured, licking the tiny tomโs head. โYou will be able to feed soon enough.โ As the she-cat left Snowblossom to grieve, she was met with curious gazes. A mottled dark gray tom looked down from where he was perchedโon an old withered willow tree trunkโand steadily climbed down from it. โApplebreeze, what is going on?โ Applebreeze took a shaky breath. โIโm sorry Rainstar, but I must get more herbs for Snowblossom. One of the kits was stillborn, however the other seems strong.โ The old leaderโs eyes glazed with sadness. โMay StarClan light his path. No kit should die this way.โ โWhere is Stormfang?โ Applebreeze asked. Surely the father of the kits would want to know? Then again, as she glanced at the warriors den, the medicine cat felt resentment seethe from her claws. Rainstar shook his head. โItโs best we tell him come morning. Let Snowblossom grieve in peace.โ With a snort of contempt, Applebreeze went to gather more herbs from her den. Digging out her stores for something that would calm the hysterical queen, a sudden vision hit her. Red eyes pierced through the darkness of the den, sending shivers up her spine. Was StarClan sending her a vision now of all times? But as soon as it came, it ended. Pushing the unsettling image of red eyes away from her thoughts, she quickly gathered what she needed and rushed back towards the nursery. When she reentered the den, Snowblossom had calmed down some. The queen had her head lifted, gently licking her daughterโs cold fur. Dropping the herbs beside her paws, the medicine cat shifted her gaze towards the tom-kit. He was kneeding strongly, and his back legs churned with the effort. Despite her worries, Applebreeze knew this tiny kit would be strong enough to survive the night at the very least. โI...I want to bury my daughter,โ Snowblossom spoke suddenly, her voice quiet. โPlease, let me bury my precious Sweetkit.โ Applebreeze dipped her head solemnly. โIn the morning,โ she promised. โPlease rest first. Your son still needs you.โ โMy son...โ her misty gaze turned towards the snow-white kit at her belly. โHeโs so strong, so beautiful.โ โHe certainly is,โ Applebreeze murmured, hoping to distract the queen from Sweetkit at the moment. โDo you want to name him?โ Staring at her son, Snowblossomโs eyes glowed with both love and grief. Stretching her muzzle with effort, she placed her nose on his head. โIcekit. His name will be Icekit.โ Applebreeze stared at the queen and the tiny kit, her thoughts whirling back to the vision of the piercing red eyes. Just what awaited the Clan in the coming moons? Could this new life be a warning that StarClan had sent early? Nonsense. She shook her head and turned to leave the den. Icekit would grow up like any other ReedClan kit, and become a warrior. Applebreeze was certain of that.
Chapter One
Sharp red eyes watched a frog hop across the marshy ground, awaiting the moment to strike. Behind those eyes, a long-haired white tom kit crawled along the wet ground, mimicking what he had seen the older cats do. With a great leap, he splashed into a puddle sending muddy spray all over his snow white pelt. The frog leaped away frantically, and the tom kit quickly pounced after it. However fast the kit was, the frog was even faster; making itsโ way to safety into a shallow stream.
โFrog-dung!โ the little tom kit spat. He almost had the frog at his claws. If only the puddle hadnโt been there!
Another kit padded over to him, his pelt a dark gray. โYou almost had it! Too bad you didnโt catch it though,โ his amber eyes sympathetic.
โWho wants to catch a frog anyways?โ mewed another kit, a dainty blue-gray tabby.
The first tom kit huffed angrily, still cross with himself at his failed catch. โI could have shown Stormfang! He would be so impressed if he saw I caught that big frog all by myself!โ
The other two kits exchanged an uneasy glance, before a growl made them all spin around.
โWhat are you kits doing out of the nursery?โ a dark gray tabby leered down at them through silver eyes, his tail tip twitching irritably. โQuit getting underpaw and stay in the nursery where you belong!โ
โBut Icekit almost caught a frog!โ the little gray tom defended.
The older cat gave Icekit a withering stare, one that made the white kit shrink in his pelt. โSo you think you actually have what it takes to catch something, do you?โ
Icekit straightened up, trying to show his father how much he grew in the past two moons. โY-Yes! I was really close but-โ
His father gave a contemptuous snort. โA little defect like you couldnโt possibly match up to any of the other kits. Why donโt you just go and stay in the nursery, under your motherโs belly where you belong?โ
Stung, Icekit flinched at his fatherโs harsh words. Why did Stormfang always insist on being so hard on him? What had he done wrong that made his father so disappointed in him?
โThatโs not fair!โ Icekitโs friend complained. โIcekit is super great! Why do you need to be so mean?โ
Stormfang snarled at him. โBe quiet Marshkit, no one asked you!โ He swept his tail through a puddle, splashing the three kits as he turned away. โI have no more time to spend on useless kits.โ
No longer feeling up to being outside, Icekit slunk off back towards the nursery. Inside, his mother was sitting up in her nest, grooming her long thick white fur. She stopped instantly when she saw Icekit, and quickly wrapped her tail around him.
โWhatโs wrong, my love?โ she asked, pressing her muzzle close to his.
Icekit burrowed into his motherโs warm fur, grateful for having at least one parent that didnโt seem to hate him. โStormfang was disappointed in me again.โ
Snowblossom tensed, her deep blue eyes narrowed angrily. โWhat did he say this time?โ
Icekit frowned and looked up at his mother. โI tried to catch a frog to impress him, but failed. He said I belonged in the nursery, not outside.โ
Giving an exasperated sigh, Snowblossom let a small growl escape her throat. โHonestly! What did I ever see in that flea-bitten tom?โ She looked down at Icekit with a gentle gaze. โYou donโt listen to a word he says, you hear me? Youโre perfect just how you are.โ
Am I? Icekit wondered. It was no secret that most cats flinched away from his eerie red gaze. Surely it wasnโt just Stormfang who found him defective in some way? He didnโt know, all he knew was that he wanted to desperately prove himself to both his father and Clanmates. Why StarClan cursed him with such unsettling eyes, he had no idea; but he was willing to do whatever it took to show everyone how great he could be.
โWhy donโt you go back outside and play with Marshkit, and Puddlekit?โ his mother suggested, licking his ears affectionately. โDonโt mind the warriors, just enjoy the time you have as a kit, little one.โ
Shaking his head, Icekit sunk into the nest. โCan I just stay with you? Iโd rather take a nap instead.โ
Purring, Snowblossom curled around Icekit and began to groom him. โOf course, my love. You get all the rest you need.โ
Happily dozing beside his motherโs warm belly fur, Icekit faded off into sleep almost instantly.
The next morning, Icekit felt a lot better. He burst out of the nursery with Puddlekit, and Marshkit at his heels, as the three kits raced towards the reed shallows. Skidding to a halt, puffing, Icekit waited for his denmates to catch up.
โNo fair!โ Puddlekit complained almost instantly. โYou got a head start!โ
Icekit snorted. โDid not! You two just arenโt as fast as I am!โ
Marshkit ignored their quarrel, his gaze fixed on the shallows. He turned to look at them. โAre we going to play in here or what?โ
Icekitโs whiskers twitched excitedly. Although it wasnโt even close to the depth of the river that surrounded the camp, the shallows were perfect for kits to learn how to swim. And if they were lucky, there may even be a minnow or two to catch!
Puddlekit splashed in before both of them, squeaking in surprise. โItโs cold!โ
โOf course it is, frog-brain!โ Marshkit teased his sister playfully. โItโs almost leaf-fall remember?โ
Icekit studied the clear shallow water a moment, before sliding in. His paws nearly touched the bottom, and he felt himself paddling to keep balance above the water. Gaining confidence in his paw strokes, he glided around Puddlekit.
โItโs not so bad,โ he told her, amused at the obvious annoyance in her gaze.
Marshkit joined in last, his tail sticking up straight out of the water like a reed. Icekit suppressed a snort of laughter at the ridiculous sight.
โYou look like a reed!โ Puddlekit purred, paddling over to nip playfully at his tail.
โHey!โ Marshkit yelped, splashing her. โThat hurt!โ
As the two littermates proceeded to chase each other around in the shallows, Icekit paddled over to a boulder that overlooked the water. Clambering onto the rock, he shook out his long fur and looked around. The camp was nearly empty; most of the warriors out on patrols. Aside from Sunstone heading towards the dirt-place, her swollen belly of unborn kits swaying under her, no cat seemed to be around to pay any mind to three noisy kits.
Icekit felt something wet press against his pelt, and he blinked to see Marshkit had joined him up onto the boulder. โWow, the camp is pretty quiet.โ
Puddlekit climbed up to stand on his other side, her ears twitching. โI hope Rushwing brings us back something to play with again.โ
Icekit suppressed a feeling of envy. Rushwing was his friendโs father, and unlike Stormfang, spent a lot of his spare time with his kits; usually bringing things like feathers or pretty stones back from patrols for them to play with.
โOh, look!โ Puddlekit chirped happily, sliding down the rock. โThere he is now!โ
Marshkit angled his ears towards the camp entrance, and Icekit could make out black pelt of their father emerging from behind Swanfeather, carrying a large trout in his jaws. Marshkit quickly bundled off after his sister, leaving Icekit alone on the boulder. As he watched his two friends greet Rushwing happily, he couldnโt help but feel an emptiness in his chest. Once again, the young tom kit felt the familiar grief of having a father that wanted nothing to do with him. Splashing back down through the shallows, he made his way back to the nursery; despite everything, at least Snowblossom would always want him.
Chapter Two Icekit watched from the nursery as the elders busily swarmed around Rainstarโs still body. In the past moon, the old ReedClan leader had become weaker and frail from his old age, before passing peacefully in his nest just before sunhigh. Icekit wasnโt sure what the elderโs were doing to Rainstarโs body, but he was told to stay in the nursery as the vigil was prepared. The sun was low in the sky, a gentle cool breeze whipping across the clearing as cats gathered from afar; each awaiting their turn to share tongues once last time with their former leader.
Willowtail was among the elders, helping arrange Rainstar properly. The ReedClan deputy had served Rainstar for nearly six moons, and had shared a close bond with the old tom cat. Applebreeze brought more herbs for the elders to use, and Icekit shifted closer to the edge of the nursery to get a better look. Marshkit and Puddlekit were fast asleep in their nest, their mother, Lilypetal, snoring softly. The tiny mewls of Sunstoneโs newest arrivalsโDapplekit, Specklekit, and Spottedkitโwho were just born half a moon ago, were muffled by their motherโs soft murmuring.
Snowblossom peered up from their nest, her blue eyes glowing in the darkness of the nursery. โIcekit, come back to the nest. This isnโt something for you to see.โ
โWhy not?โ asked Icekit. Shouldnโt he be sharing vigil too with his Clanmates?
โThis is a sacred ritual,โ his mother explained softly, as to not wake their denmates. โRainstarโs spirit is being sent to StarClan, and they do not need a kit getting in the way. Now, come to bed dear; youโll miss out on the naming of our new deputy tonight if you sleep in too long.โ
The new deputy! Icekit had almost forgotten. Willowtail would go to receive her nine lives tonight, but right before that she would choose the new deputy of the Clan. Gazing out across the clearing, Icekit wondered who it would be. Perhaps Mottlecloud, Willowtailโs mate? The two had Milkpaw together, so maybe she would choose her kin to follow after her? Or maybe even Goosefur, who had the experience as an older warrior. Excitement prickled his pads. Maybe the new deputy would persuade Willowtail to let him become an apprentice sooner than six moons! Icekit thought the idea was reasonable. After all, he was bigger than his denmates and had nearly perfected his minnow hunting technique in the reed shallows.
โIcekit,โ Snowblossomโs voice was firmer now. โCome. You need your rest, you can watch the naming of the new deputy instead.โ
Deciding it was best not to upset his mother, Icekit turned and curled up in the nest beside Snowblossom. As his mother licked his ears, he felt himself doze off into a deep sleep.
โIcekit, wake up!โ
Blinking his eyes open tiredly, Icekit could just make out the blurry face of his friend Marshkit. Puddlekit was shifting her paws anxiously at the entrance of the nursery, while Sunstone dozingly nursed her kits. Both Lilypetal and Snowblossom had gone, leaving the three kits alone.
โWhat is it?โ he yawned, sitting up slowly, noticing that the sky outside had gotten darker.
โWillowtail is about to name the new deputy!โ Puddlkit told him. โSo hurry up! I donโt want to miss it!โ
The naming ceremony! Icekit had almost forgotten in his haze of sleep. Quickly gathering to his paws, he dashed out after his friends. He noticed Rainstarโs body was gone, and briefly wondered where they taken him. Before he could ask, he noticed Willowtail emerging from Rainstarโs old den. The sky was dark with hues of violet and deep blue, and her breath billowed in the cool evening air. Climbing onto the Highbranch, she called out the usual summons for the cats to gather.
Icekit watched as the warriors Creekpelt, Shellskip, Swanfeather, Goosefur, Beechtail, and Lichenfall all emerged from the warriors den nearby. Rushwing, Mottlecloud, Frostleaf, and Stormfang all looked up from their conversation, while the two apprentices: Milkpaw and Twigpaw, hurried over from the apprentices den. The elders, Sedgeheart, Kinkfoot, Webclaw, and Blizzardtuft all sat at the entrance of their den, while Applebreeze and Reedpaw peeked out from the roots of the old willow tree that made their den. Snowblossom and Lilypetal were nearby, keeping a close eye on the three kits as the ceremony began.
โWe honor Rainstar tonight, a brilliant leader to our Clan for many moons,โ Willowtail started, dipping her head in respect briefly. โTonight, before I receive my nine lives, I must choose a deputy. After a long day of thinking, I have chosen,โ She lifted her muzzle to the sky, as if to tell Rainstar herself of her choice. โI say these words before StarClan, so that the spirits of our warrior ancestors may hear and approve of my choice. The new deputy of ReedClan is Stormfang.โ
Icekitโs blood turned cold as he watched his father step forward with a mixture of pleasure and surprise in his eyes. He faced Willowtail, his head held high.
โI will do my best to serve you and our Clan for the remainder of my life as a warrior. I am honored to have been chosen.โ
โStormfang! Stormfang! Stormfang!โ the Clan cheered, all except Snowblossom, who was watching with displeasure in her deep blue gaze.
Icekit didnโt feel like cheering either, nervous that his father had been chosen. Just what did this mean for him? His father already thought he was defective, what if he convinced Willowtail not to make him an apprentice? Shaking, he quickly ran back to the nursery. He didnโt want to think about it. He knew that somehow this would end badly for him. Why Stormfang of all cats? Why not a cat who actually liked him?
โIcekit,โ his motherโs soft voice could be heard from behind.
Icekit just buried his face deeper into the nest, afraid to face to his mother. What if she would come to agree with Stormfang too? What would happen then?
His mother simply curled herself around him, cradling him in her paws. โMy precious son, do not be afraid,โ she told him quietly. โWillowtail is an honorable warrior. Nothing will come of this my love, not for as long as I live.โ
Icekit gaze up at her with wide red eyes. โBut what if something happens and you die? What then? Stormfang hates me! Donโt you see that? He thinks Iโm a defect! What if other cats start to think that too?โ
โYou are not a defect!โ his mother mewed fiercely, shocking Icekit. โNo matter what your father says, you are no different than any other kit. You are perfect just the way you are. And even if I die, I will always look after you. Donโt you dare forget that.โ
Still shivering, Icekit buried his muzzle in his motherโs soft chest fur. He wanted to believe her, but what cat would honestly think differently? Icekit didnโt know, nor did he want to think of it. All he knew now, was that his future in the Clan was more uncertain than ever.
Chapter ThreeโIcekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Icepaw.โ Willowstarโs voice echoed through the frost-bitten clearing.Icepaw stood in the center, his long white fur neatly groomed. He stared up at the ReedClan leader nervously, not daring to take his eyes off of hers. In the past three moons since she had become leader, Icepaw still felt uncertain, but was determined to prove himself now that he was an apprentice. โYour mentor will be Swanfeather,โ Willowstar continued, dipping her head to the black-and-white warrior. โI hope Swanfeather will pass down all she knows on to you.โIcepaw turned to see Swanfeather approaching, and lifted his chin. Willowstar looked down to address her as she approached. โSwanfeather, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You have received excellent training from Sedgeheart, and you have shown yourself to be stern and fair. You will be the mentor of Icepaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to him.โโI certainly will, Willowstar.โ She turned to Icepaw, and gently touched noses with him. As the two cats stepped back, the cats all broke into cheers for the new apprentice. โIcepaw! Icepaw! Icepaw!โShying away from all the attention, he caught the gazes of Marshkit and Puddlekit from outside the nursery. Quickly he scurried over to them, bumping his muzzle against Marshkitโs shoulder. He wished his friends had been made apprentices with him, but they were half a moon younger and not quite old enough to be apprenticed. โYouโre finally an apprentice!โ Marshkit purred happily. โIโm so jealous!โ Puddlekit added, scuffing the ground with her paws. โWeโre not that much younger than you are!โLilypetal slid out of the nursery, her eyes warm as she gazed at her kits. โOh yes, but you will be โpaws soon enough. Now come, itโs too cold out here today.โDisappointed that he couldnโt talk to his friends more, Icepaw turned away from the nursery. Snowblossom was quick to greet him, smothering him in purrs and licks. โIโm so proud of you!โ she mewed happily. โYou be a good apprentice to Swanfeather, you hear? Make sure to listen to everything she tells you!โIcepaw gently pushed away from his motherโs hold. โI will! Just let me go!โEyes misty, Snowblossom gave him one final lick on the head and backed up. โNow go on! You mustnโt keep your mentor waiting!โSwanfeather was waiting a distance off, sitting neatly with her tail curled over her front paws. She gave him a friendly blink as he approached. โAll set?โIcepawโs felt fizzy with excitement. He was finally an apprentice! He couldnโt wait to see ReedClanโs territory, and find the best fishing spots for hunting. Bouncing on his paws, he let out a loud purr. โWhere are we going first?โโSince itโs your first day, I thought Iโd show you the river,โ his mentor explained. โOur territory has a lot of water, so the first and most important thing for you to learn is how to swim.โIcepaw began to follow her as she led the way out of camp. โIโve been practicing in the reed shallows for moons now! How hard can it be in the river?โSwanfeatherโs silver eyes glazed over with a serious look. โMany cats have drowned by underestimating the river and the power it holds. Donโt ever get too arrogant, Icepaw,โ she warned sternly. โThe moment you forget just how powerful it is, is the moment youโre likely to be sucked in by the currents.โShuddering at the thought of being stuck underwater, Icepaw gave a solemn nod and followed more quietly. Not far from the entrance to camp was a small river, one that separated the camp from the mainland. He peered over the side to get a better look at the murky depths, but could see nothing but a dull brown color. The river itself seemed so calm; was he really to be worried like Swanfeather insisted?โIโll go in first,โ his mentor instructed. โOnce Iโm up to my belly fur, I want you to slowly wade in. Thereโs a drop off where the water goes over your head, so donโt be too alarmed. If anything happens, Iโll be right here to grab you.โNodding, he waited for the black-and-white she-cat to reach the water. Once she was set, he slowly stepped into the water, wincing at the coldness of it. Carefully wading through, he came to a stop beside Swanfeather, though unlike her, the water rushed up almost over his back. He watched his mentor neatly glide off the ledge, swimming confidently in the deep end. She turned to watch him, awaiting his turn. Icepaw took a deep breath, and followed in his mentorโs pawsteps. Slowly, he felt the ground give way under his paws, and he struggled briefly to keep afloat as the current threatened to suck him under. Finally, after some of the longest moments in Icepawโs short life, he managed to steady himself along the current. Proudly he churned the water around Swanfeather, keeping his chin above the water with little effort. โGreat job!โ his mentor praised. โYou handled that much better than I thought you would.โWarmed by his mentorโs praise, Icepaw climbed out of the opposite bank. Shaking his fur out, he gazed ahead of him. The marshlands stretched out for miles, reminding Icepaw just how vast ReedClanโs territory really was. Swanfeather joined him on the bank, before walking on ahead. Icepaw quickly followed, enjoying the squelching on the marshy peat underpaw. They finally came to a halt, as Swanfeather led him down a slight slope. Emerging through some reeds, the river opened up much more largely than it did before. Unlike the river back near camp, this water was much clearer and glistened in the morning sun. Just as he was about to get closer, Swanfeatherโs tail bared the way. โThis river is much stronger than the one before,โ she warned him. โWeโll be staying near the more shallow end, but I donโt want you rushing in. Itโs far too dangerous.โListening attentively, he gazed back out across the river. Just on the other side was a large patch of woodland, and if he breathed in hard enough he could smell a scent he wasnโt used to.โWhatโs over there?โ he asked, nearly retching at the pungent scent.Swanfeatherโs eyes glowed with amusement. โThatโs LeafClanโs territory. Here is where we share the border with them. Further down we share a border with PineClan. Thankfully the river serves as a natural barrier between our Clans, so theyโre less likely to attack us in our own territory.โโSo the river not only feeds us, but protects us too?โ Icepaw asked, amazed at how much the river provided them.โThatโs right,โ Swanfeather mewed proudly. โAlthough the river causes us itsโ fair share of troubles too. When it floods it endangers us, and itโs also dangerous to swim in at times. Youโll learn in time just how beneficial and dangerous the river is to us.โEager to learn more, Icepaw stared back down at the river. โSo can we keep practicing at my swimming?โSwanfeather purred. โOf course, letโs go.โAs he followed his mentor down to the river, Icepaw felt a swell of pride. ReedClan was the best Clan ever! And once he mastered swimming in the river, Icepaw knew that he would be able to accomplish anything.
Chapter FourAfter a long day spent swimming, Icepaw was happy to get settled in his new nest inside the apprenticesโ den. He faintly missed curling up in Snowblossomโs warm fur, but was too tired to dwell on it. Before long he dozed off, and the next day came quickly. โIcepaw!โ Swanfeatherโs mew could be heard calling him from outside.Groggily, Icepaw got to his paws. Still dreary from sleep, he stepped out into the brisk morning air. Swanfeather was waiting patiently for him nearby, and he suddenly remembered that today he would be taken on a tour of the territory. Shaking the last traces of sleep from his body, he rushed over to meet his mentor.โAre you awake now?โ she asked, eyes gleaming teasingly.Icepaw nodded with a stifled yawn.โGood,โ Swanfeather meowed. โAs I told you yesterday, we will be exploring the territory. Now that youโve had some nice lessons at swimming, itโs time you learned what else belongs to us.โโAre we going to see the gorge?โ Icepaw asked, whiskers twitching with excitement as he paced beside his mentor. โI heard it had a huge wall of water that sounds like thunder!โSwanfeather purred. โYes, that will be our last stop actually. Itโs also the border between us and PineClan. Keep in mind to stay away from the ledge, the ground is unstable there,โ she warned.โIโll remember!โ Icepaw promised, splashing into the small river that guarded the camp. Once across, he shook out his pelt and sniffed the air. Swanfeather followed slower, leading Icepaw down a through some woven down reedsโflattened by countless seasons of cats. As they walked, Icepawโs gaze followed a frog hopping along the path. He quickly pounced at it, but the wriggly creature slipped through his claws and into the water nearby. Swanfeather let out a loud purr of amusement.โYou have to be quicker than that.โIcepaw wrinkled his nose. โI could have caught it if it were so slimy!โ He shook his claws, sticking out his tongue in disgust.Swanfeather snorted and gently nudged him as she moved on. Icepaw followed after her until they emerged to an opening. His eyes widened when he saw a large clearing of springy marshland. Water shimmered brightly along the surface, disturbed by Twigpaw and Milkpawโs battle training. โThis is the marsh pool,โ Swanfeather told him. โYouโll spend a lot of time here training, so get a good look!โIcepaw watched his denmates excitedly. Twigpaw rolled away from Milkpawโs attacks, and quickly flung himself onto the white she-cat. Milkpaw let out a yowl of defiance as the two rolled across the marshy ground. Icepawโs whiskers twitched with anticipation at Milkpawโs next move, but was poked by Swanfeatherโs nose.โLetโs go,โ she told him.Disappointed at not seeing how the training ended, Icepaw reluctantly followed his mentor away from the marsh pool. The two cats continued on, this time along the river. Colorful leaves danced along the riverโs clear surface, reminding Icepaw that leaf-fall was just around the corner. From what he was told by Snowblossom, the trees would soon all lose their leaves and leaf-bare would comeโbringing cold and snow. Gazing up at the sky, he wondered just what snow was like. He remembered the eldersโ muttering about the river freezing up, but he found that hard to believe. The river? A solid block of ice? Impossible! After a while of walking through the marsh, Icepaw felt his paws starting to get sore. Just how big was their territory anyways? It felt like it went on forever! Tail dropping with exhaustion, he looked up as he heard a loud thundering sound. Swanfeather looked up too, glancing back at him with a twinkle in her eye.โI hope youโre not too tired to see the gorge,โ she teased.Instantly perking up, Icepaw bounced on his paws. โAs if! Letโs go!โLaughing, Swanfeather led him closer to the loud thundering sound. What Icepaw saw amazed him. Stretching up high above was a wall of water, thundering down into the river below. Water droplets sprayed in every direction, casting a small rainbow hue across the gorge. He noticed the ground nearby narrowed into a channel, and a full grown cat could easily leap across the gap. Awed by the beauty of the falls, he gazed down below. The water churned in a thick white foam, making it impossible to see the water below as a mist bathed his fur. โBeautiful, isnโt it?โ Swanfeather murmured, gazing up at the waterfall.Icepaw simply nodded, taking a deep breath. A rank stench bathed his nostrils then, causing him to retch. Backing away from the waterfall, his hackles rising, he smell the air again. The scent was strong, and one that Icepaw did not recognize. To his surprise, Swanfeather seemed to notice, and caught on quick. Her eyes narrowed as she smelled the ground, before turning on Icepaw with urgency in her eyes.โIcepaw, we need to go back to camp. We have been invaded!โ
