So basically my mom and I make stuff to sell places like Etsy (soon we're gonna be doing an anime/gaming/comic convention too) and my mom was looking at Lolita-style stuff (ya know, dresses and the like) and was thinking it's well within her skill range to make. Problem is (according to her at least; I haven't looked into it at all) a lot of stuff is quite specific with styles, colors, etc. and a lot of it is also "brand name" and really expensive, as far as she can find. So I figured I'd ask and see if anyone on here is into that sort of style, what advice/input you can give, and what your opinion on hand-made Lolita stuff would be, the type of stuff you look for, etc. So, any opinions/input/comments?

"Lolita" isn't really something you should strive for? I'm honestly not trying to insult you or your taste in fashion. I really hope you're 20+ years old because?? I remember being dressed up like that and called a loli and it was absolutely disgusting and thinking about it makes me sick. I just think it would be better to go for something different but I assume you're an adult and can do what you want anyways

Nah son I'm not dressing like that. No, Lolita fashion is just a general category of fashion that's popular with anime fans (you see it in lots of animes; I would say even the majority have Lolita style influence somewhere in them) and you'll see it a lot at, like, conventions and stuff. I have lots of friends who enjoy that style. It's pretty much just poofy dresses, lots of lace and bows, etc.- an almost porcelain doll sort of fashion. The name honestly implies that it's worse than it is. Though, I wouldn't recommend just going out in the world like that cuz it's a pretty unusual style, but it's fine for like, anime conventions, Halloween, and that sort of thing. I have quite a few friends who are into it and they never have a problem, but again, that's not how they dress normally (well, most of them).
But yeah, just to make it clear, I'm a dude- I'm not gonna be going anywhere in frilly, lacy dresses, with the exception of my inevitable Maid Equius cosplay lol so this isn't personal fashion advice I'm asking for, I'm basically asking people who are into that style their opinion. If you're not into the style, this thread isn't for you.

Exactly, but sort of exaggerated. Base Victorian style, add lots of frills and bows and other accessories to give a sort of childish/porcelain doll type feel, and there you go: Lolita in a nutshell. From what I understand, there are a lot of subcagetgories of the style, but that basically summarizes the umbrella term of the Lolita style.
