Derek Parker There isn’t much to note about Derek, however, he is a person that you remember easily. He has brown hair and smoky blue-grey eyes, and stands around 5’10”. His skin isn’t pale, but it isn’t exactly tan either. It’s somewhere in the middle. Across his skin are he scars that are the testament of his childhood. Most can't be seen due to his clothing, but his back mainly is scored with the beatings of a drunk father. Usually he wears jeans and a loose t-shirt with a necklace of small wooden beads. Derek is the kind of person who tries not to get to upset about anything. Key word is try. Despite the hardships of an abusive childhood, somehow the boy walked away with a kind demeanor. He tries to find the positive in everyone and everything, always giving people the benefit of the doubt unless they prove themselves to be bad people. If they are good, then he will be a loyal friend, always willing to lend a hand to those who need help or a shoulder to lean on. Yet he is not all whole and well. The boy is troubled with panic attacks. Triggered by stress or overwhelming emotions, he will have a moment of uncontrollable anxiety and fear that lasts anywhere between thirty seconds to two minutes. However, this is only one side of the coin for him. Derek has multiple personalities, or really, just two. This has a huge way of how he interacts with the world and people around him since he really can't control when he switches between personalities. One minute he will be himself, the original Derek, and the next he will be a fabrication of his broken mind, an escape, a coping mechanism he created to shield himself from his father. It's hard for him to be out in public sometimes, and, since he is fully aware of what the other "person" is doing, he is often times embarrassed when he has this shifts. Sam Sam is Derek's second personality. Created, unknowingly, when the boy was five, Sam is very much like a younger version of Derek. The child that never got to be. The purpose of Sam was more of a defense attempt during his father's drunken or angry state. Forever stuck at age six, Sam is the embodiment of six year old Derek, never growing up even if Derek does. He functions on the basic levels any normal six year old would. His concepts of right and wrong are fuzzy, he is single-minded, and all education he should have obtained is completely forgotten. It's as if he were to step back in time yet kept his current body. Sam is a lovable little guy, but he is extremely unstable mentally. He is skittish and terrified of most adults, especially men, and most of the time, he's the one who gets the majority of the panic attacks. He clings to those he trusts the most, getting very upset whenever they have to leave or he can't see them. If anyone takes on an angry tone, the boy will retreat into himself, shying away from that person and trying to make himself as small and invisible as possible.
(Sure thing! Sorry if it's not the best. I'm tired, but really want to start things off before heading to bed.) Derek walked down the hallway of his school. By now, the building was empty of other students. The reason: He had an episode with Sam. It wasn't often the younger personality would bother him at school, a place that was hard enough to deal with as it was. However, today he had been restless. The second personality had been craving attention and decided to take over during his last class, chemistry. It's safe to say that chemicals and six year olds don't mix well. He had to admit, though, Sam had done a good job trying to sit still and pretend to listen to the teacher. It just wasn't good enough. He had accidentally broken an empty beaker which resulted in him being sent to stay with the nurse while he recovered himself. It took about an hour, but eventually the child removed himself from control, leaving Derek to deal with the aftermath. Was Vi still waiting for him? Or had she already headed back home? Usually, the girl always waited for him so they could walk home together, but he knew on days like today, she shouldn't have to wait on him. It took a lot out of her, he knew, just showing up everyday. To ask her to wait for him after an episode like today was stretching it. Vi always waited, but still he wondered if today she had decided to get a heads start on him or not.

Violetta tried very hard to be patient with both Derek, and Sam when he made his appearances. They just seemed to be matching each other for bad days recently. She heard from the rumor mill that he'd ended up at the nurses office, but at the same time she'd come in late to school because she missed the bus and had to walk, meaning that she didn't get the usual breakfast provided to low-income teens, along with having to walk over a mile and a half just to get there in the first place. To top that, she hadn't even seen Derek today because of the whole mess, so she was just about ready to fall asleep sitting up in her last class of the day.
She popped her knuckles, trying to relieve some of the pain that just never seemed to leave them lately, when Derek finally decided to grace her with his presence. Vi could tell it was Derek just by looking at the way he held himself, Sam was often extremely clumsy, and both shy, but also loud. Derek was more demure and subsequently, did not have two left feet. "Hey Derek." She greeted quietly, sticking her arms back into her fore-arm crutches so they could head out. Her joints were absolutely burning, and she was a little fuzzy on her feet simply from not having eaten yet that day. She'd make it home fine though, she always did. And Derek didn't need anything else to worry about after the day he'd had.
((Don't worry about it! I'm about to head for bed too. I'm glad we could start though.)

At the sight of his best friend waiting for him, Derek smiled. Sam pushed at his consciousness, wanting to greet the girl who he adored. He wanted to run to her, to shout and hug the girl. However, Derek managed to keep the child at bay. It was easy when the boy had already gotten rid of his extra energy later. Still, his steps quickened to reach her
"Hey, Vi!" he greeted with a wide, slightly tired smile. "Where have you been? I didn't see you this morning. Are you feeling okay?" Okay, so maybe Sam was influencing his torrent of questions, but for the most part, Derek was himself. He had been worried about Violetta when she hadn't shown up that morning, which might have been the cause for Sam's take over during class. He couldn't help but be scared that she was having a bad day with her joints. Could she have been stuck in bed, in too much pain to move today? She didn't have many of those days, but he always hated seeing her suffer when he couldn't do anything to help her.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to reply earlier this evening!)
Violetta immediately nodded at Derek's question. "I'm okay." She answered quietly. "I'm ready to get going though." The Italian added. "I missed the bus this morning, so I ended up being late." Admittedly, it had been a very long day after that whole mess. She didn't even enjoy her trigonometry class, and that was coming from a Dyslexic who had a tendency to fail all her other classes but art if it was very reading heavy. "I know you didn't have the great day though." She mentioned, leading towards Derek getting to vent about his day as well. While they walked -or in Vi's case, kind of hobbled along towards the main doors of the school.

(It's all good. ^^ )
Derek frowned. "You missed the bus?" he asked, Sam finally taking a back seat in his mind. For the moment anyway. "You mean you walked all the way here? Why didn't you try to call anyone? You know Tim would have picked you up. I would have at the very least come to walk with you." Violetta didn't live the closest to the school. While for a normal student their age, a car would be the chosen mode of transportation. However, neither one of them were in any condition to drive. Well, Vi could, he couldn't. With his personalities prone to shift at unpredictable times, driving was the worst thing he could do. That's where Tim came in. Tim Jennings, their social worker, was the only adult that had been a constant in both of their lives for a long time now. The man limited the number of charges in his care so he could dedicate time and effort into each one. He had done a lot for the pair, and never failed to drop everything to come to their aid if they called. So why hadn't she called him this morning when she missed the bus? Sure, she still would have been late, but at least she would have saved herself so discomfort.

"He's got that new case this week, remember?" Violetta reminded him. "Since the twins got adopted, he was assigned another family. Five kids. Hopefully, he won't have them for long but he did not the extra stress of coming to get me." She explained. Plus, then Tim would've wanted to know where her foster parents were, and why weren't they driving her like they said they were? The answer was simply that they couldn't be bothered to -just like she wasn't getting her 'scripts, or consistent meals. But, this home was better than the last one, and that's really all she could ask for. "I didn't want you to be late either Derek." Vi chastised. As they exited the school, several members of the football team made their appearance known by throwing balled up pieces of paper at Vi, and inadvertently, Derek. On her first day at this school, she'd been able to distract them from harassing a freshmen, and this had been her punishment ever since.

"Oh yeah," Derek murmured. He had forgotten about that. Of course, he knew of the twins adoption, and he was happy for the two of them. Especially since they had found a home together instead of being separated. But now the man had taken on a new set of siblings who needed help. This had to be the most kids he was taking care of that he could remember. No doubt the social worker had his hands full at the moment. He followed her out of the school. "I don't care. I'd rather be late than worry if your out laying on the ground somewhere in pain," he pointed out. When the balls of paper flew their way, the boy moved to place himself between her and the "attackers". It was an automatic response, an instinct ingrained in him from a time his little sister was still alive. He was used to beatings, and while he didn't enjoy them, he would rather take them in order to spare someone else. While this wasn't really anything major, he still tried to protect Violetta as best he could.

In response to the other teen, Violetta sighed. "You know I wouldn't let that happen again." It was one time! Why'd he have to keep bringing that up? A combination of questionable asthma and low blood sugar that caused her to fall over and just... Not get back up again until she had to.
When the jocks started their jag again, Violetta was grateful that Derek was able to ignore them. Sadly, Sam wasn't, so the players had gotten a 'win' via a teary reaction. Ignoring them hadn't worked so far, but as long as they were only throwing paper, she wasn't too concerned.
(Goodnight! I wanted to get one post out to you before I went to bed, since we haven't had a chance to really RP yet.)

Derek gave a small smile. "I know you, Vi," he replied. "While you wouldn't do it on purpose, you always let yourself get caught up in half a million things until you forget to supply your basic needs. You go until you crash and burn. It'll happen again, sooner or later, if no one is there to make sure you're somewhat taking care of yourself." All of this he said with fondness. It wasn't her fault that she had some much to keep her busy. She had to worry about not only herself, but him as well at times. Mainly when Sam wanted to play. It wasn't easy.
Derek didn't spare the jocks a look as they walked out of range. He knew from experience that ignoring a bully wouldn't make him leave you alone. How many times had he tried with his own father? The jocks would continue their amusement one way or find someone else to be their victims. There was really nothing they could do. Or, at least in his mind. They could fight back, tell a teacher, but the boy had long ago accepted being the one mistreated. Even if he knew it was wrong, the chances of him standing up or doing anything about it was slim.

Vi bristled a bit at his words. While she preferred to think of herself as independent, Derek was far from wrong about her needing supervision to remind her of necessities. Like eating, drinking, wearing a mask for her asthma if the weather and pollution called for it. She'd add taking her meds to that list, but she currently wasn't on any because her foster parents were convinced she was drug seeking. Nevermind the fact that she wasn't on anything for pain management. Instead of barking at him like she might've been keen to do, Violetta answered, with a smirk, "Oh I don't know. I just don't think drinking water is good for us, y'know?"
Thankfully, today the football players didn't follow them off of school grounds, and they were soon away from their 'attackers'. At this point, Violetta could breathe a sigh of relief, moving towards releasing the anxiety she'd been holding in her chest. Like Derek, she saw no other options to prevent the harassment, so while grinning and bearing it was not easy, she did so to keep things from escalating.

"Yeah." Violetta agreed. "But I think I do okay." Sure, today wasn't the best example of that, but all in all, she wasn't as bad as she'd been in the past. There was a definite improvement, because she used to not even use braces, let alone crutches, to aid in her walking. She was notorious for eating things that caused flare ups, like junk food and things that caused inflammation in her joints. It really did bother her that wasn't capable of independence. But, as long as she can help Derek and Derek can help her, the raven-haired girl would accept their symbiotic relationship.
(I won't be super active tonight, just a heads up. I'm glad we're finally both on though!)

"I will give you that," Derek said. "Somehow, you've managed to keep yourself up and going even when you have to chase around Sam. I have to commend you on that." Since he was fully aware of what his younger personality did, he didn't know how Violetta put up with him. He was literally a man child. Okay, so he wasn't a full grown man yet, but he was possibly the height he would forever be at. So chasing him all over the place, dealing with him leaning and laying all over her, it couldn't be the most pleasant experience. Yet she could do it, and that's something he would always be in awe about.
(Okay! And so am I. ^^ I've missed these two a lot, actually. It's so good to see them back together.)

Violetta laughed. "I think Sam is more controlled around me than other people though." She pointed out. Truthfully, she'd taught Sam quite a bit of self control, which was surprising in and of itself. He didn't run off for no reason, and typically listened pretty well. She assumed that it was because Sam knew she was a little limited in terms of actually forcing him to obey. Derek was about a foot taller than her, which in turn meant Sam was as well.

It was a weird thing when Sam took over, and a bit embarrassing on Derek's part. Vi had done wonders with the boy, but there was still only so much you could teach a six year old. Sadly, what couldn't be taught was what he needed the most. "That's because he likes you," he pointed out truthfully. Children are more willing to obey people if they like them. Or, at least, that's what he's heard. Then he added playfully, "And you spoil him." At the accusation, Violetta laughed. "I don't know what constitutes spoiled these days." She objected. If the kid wanted something, and she could provide it, why not? It was much easier to provide for a six year old than a high schooler anyway. In that moment, she misstepped and tripped herself up -not hitting the ground, but losing one of her canes in the process. "Crap." She murmured. It didn't bode well that she was tripping over her own feet only two blocks away from the school.

"You give him everything he asks for. It's not good for him," Derek said, but really he didn't really care. Spoiling Sam wasn't going to hurt anything. There wasn't a lot of bad behavior the kid could learn. Having the body of a high schooler meant that people were less hesitant to discipline him. Besides, Sam deserves to have a decent "childhood," one that Derek didn't have.
When she stumbled, Derek acted out of reflex more than processing what was going on. His arms went out to catch Vi, hoping to keep her from the ground. He couldn't say the same for her crutch, but that was fine. "Are you okay?" he asked, worry tinting his words and expression.

Violetta was so thankful that Derek had finally grown into his height, despite being short in elementary and middle school. he fact that he was well over a foot taller than her made it very easy for him to keep her upright. Sadly, this wasn't the first or the last time he'd had to grab her arm to keep her from falling. Violetta bit her lip, sighed, and responded. "Yeah, but it's just one of those days, you know?"

Violetta hated that Derek had to carry her in the past. It was embarrassing, and again linked back to her need for independence that she just couldn't seem to grasp. It had become commonplace about a year ago when she'd been ill with pneumonia, and Derek just never stopped. So while she was used to this, and it was something bearable, she knew Derek wouldn't relent. Especially if she fell again. "Just for a little bit." She agreed. The raven-haired girl took the cane she had in her hand and collapsed it as far as it would go to put into her backpack. It wouldn't fit all the way, but it was easier than trying to carry them while holding onto Derek's neck.
