Prologue
โWeโve all been ruined.โ His deep voice echoed through the dark room, causing chills to run down my spine. My mouth opened to speak up; however, no sound came out as I stood silently and stunned by his sharp words.
โSir, Iโm sure we can fix this; itโs what weโre all here for. The Red Night may have destroyed our old lives, but I stand here to live a new one. We must fight for what we think is right and for what will save us all.โ Another voice, the one of a strong woman cut through the intense air. She slammed her palm against the rough wooden desk, which had papers stacked at every corner.
The loud bang exploding from her hand silenced the room; turning low whispers to complete and utter quietness. Yet, we all snapped back to reality when a low growl erupted from under the desk, leading to a large Doberman pinscher crawling out and โgreetingโ us, except we knew the knowledge hidden beyond its dark eyes. The pinschers' jaws opened, and what shouldโve been a bark was fluent English.
โYou woke me with your foolish body language.โ He said in a low growl, turning towards the intense woman. She glared in response while folding her arms over her chest.
โPerhaps you shouldnโt have been sleeping in such dire times. Go, run along, youโre no help at the moment anyway.โ
The man who previously sat at the exhausted wooden desk stood up immediately as the two began to bicker. โQuit it you two, this is no time to start a fight. As our trustworthy deputy just finished saying, we are in dire times. If youโre not here to help, you might as well leave.โ
The Doberman pulled his lips back into a snarl when he heard the powerful man speak. โOh, really. I at least expected some support from you here. However, if Iโm that much of an outcast Iโll be on my way. Donโt expect me to be running back in joy when you need my help though.โ
And the silence returned; with the soft sound of claws scraping against the marble floors, the Doberman exited the room.
-
His paws pattered along the gravel roads as the frozen sky glared down on his shimmering pelt. With a nose raised in the air, he followed the trail towards a more city-like life. As a Doberman, he had powerful shoulders with sleek long legs and large pointed ears that seemed to hear every possible sound.
As he entered a suburb full of old crumbling buildings, he could hear the voices of multiple people. Everyone was walking along the cracked roads peacefully while minding their own business. It wouldโve been midday around this time.
The Dobermans pace quickened as he heard a familiar voice in the distanceโ which is when he saw a group of people surrounding one very important person.
Suddenly, his bones began to crack, pop and shift while his fur retracted, then he slowly changed into a different shape and color. The body of one dog had now transformed into a completely different breed; a Greyhound. He began to sprint down the road while stealthily maneuvering through the crowds of people.
The manโs voice grew louder as the hound approached and he could finally hear what exactly was being said. โAlas, we are caught in the middle of a war. Yet, we will rest here and remain civil in these horrific times. We will use our abilities as our own, and to support others in need. We are not here to follow orders of a teamโ but to make decisions of our own and to lead ourselves out of these dangers.โ The crowd clapped and cheered for the man as he finished his sentence. Even though the Civil group was known for having no leader, he seemed to be the one who led them in the right direction.
The hound stepped slowly to the front of the crowd as it began to disperse; luckily he made eye contact with the man before he left. As the greyhound walked up to him, he spoke in a rough tone, but with positivity in his voice. โI see youโre as popular as ever, which quite a change from a few years ago. Is there any new news for you all?โ The sleek dog sat in front of the man with his tail neatly wrapped around him.
The shaggy-looking man cracked a smirk while shoving his hands in his pant pockets. โWe havenโt worked together in ages, my friend. Iโm surprised to see you back here.โ He paused while shifting his gaze to the buildings around him. โNothing important has happened recently, itโs just the usual issues. The people just donโt know what to do with themselves anymoreโฆโ He then looked back at the dog with a smile. โWhat brings you here?โ
The greyhound pawed at the rough ground beneath him, unsure of how to say the subject that was on his mind. โWhen the moon fades, so shall we, but the discovery of a young, yet powerful being may save us all.โ
Suddenly the man's smile slowly faded and his eyes widened in shock. โDonโt tell meโฆโ he was cut off by dogโs low bark.
โThis isnโt the right time or place to be speaking of our situation, but the time has come as for our world is in a dire state.โ With his snout pointed up at the unmoving sky, he let out a sigh. โWe must find the boy.โ
Chapter 1 -- Eris
I was alone.
For years, all I hoped for was a life I was willing to live for- surrounded by the people I love. However, I soon realized that life wasnโt that easy and it would knock me down as many times as it could. This was after the first accident, the accident that I thought would be the worst possible thing that could ever happen, but boy was I wrong.
My parents died when I was seven, which seems so long ago now- but I can remember that day like it was just yesterday. They had been struck by a semi-truck while on their way to get something. I never knew what it was, they told me it was a secret before they left and I canโt help but feel guilty as if it was all my fault. If I had pestered them long enough, they wouldnโt have been in the intersection as the truck blasted through.
I remember the feeling of loss that I had as I hoped it had been painless for them.
Around a month later, I had moved in with my uncle, Gale. He was considered to be the black sheep of the family, being in his late thirties and not really getting anywhere far in life. Sure, he had worked in construction and made good money, but previously he had dropped out of school and never made a family. I donโt think my parents liked him very much, but he was all I had left.
When I first started to live with Gale, I didnโt know how to feel about him. He was a little strange, not really knowing how to take care of me at the time but I think he got used to it as I matured. As the years passed with him, he taught me everything I know to this day, and I realized he was my world. I never thought of him as a parent or guardian, but more as a trusted friend that I knew would be around for me whenever I needed him.
Many people didnโt like Gale because of his personality, yet I always thought he was a great guy even if he wasnโt good at making the best decisions.
Then, around a year ago I began to lose hope once again. Gale developed lung cancer, which sadly wasnโt a surprise considering how many cigarettes he had smoked in his lifetime. It was hard for the many months that he had suffered, and as it got worse and worse, we knew his life was going to end soon. Iโm glad he never had to see how our world is now, and Iโm glad he was able to raise me to become the person I am today.
For some time I had nobody; I lived in a foster house full of people I had never met before. The emotions I felt inside me was depression and loneliness. Their helpers tried to be kind to me, attempted to include me, and wanted me to join in all of their activities, but I had no hopeโฆ I had nothing. I was a mindless drone.
But then came the night that should have destroyed all of Terra Firma. All time had stopped. The people now refer to it as the Red Night, and it all began five months ago. The sky was blood red for five hours; everyone was prepared to die. We thought our planet had reached its end without us even realizing; the chaos felt like it had lasted forever.
As the final stages of twilight flashed through the sky, a strange phenomenon began- people were changing. Around a quarter of our population (750, 000 people) froze with our world and a quarter of our resources. We were all left in shock, wondering if these people could ever be brought back to life; helicopters had flown all over to gather all the frozen resources and people to start Project Adligat, the attempt of keeping everything alive but in a true frozen state- this is held by the government.
If Iโm being honest, that was the last time we had heard from the government; the rest of the people in our world began to divide into their own cities and villages. We didnโt know what to do, nor did we know what was going on, until we realized something must have been different from the surviving remnants of our world.
We had changed. We had all become something significantly different from anything else we could ever imagine. The people received abilities, all varying from completely different things. From the knowledge scientists have received so far, it seems to be that we are the only living being that has learned how to use these abilities and control them, but why are there still living animals and plants? Why does this cause us to be alive? We still do not know.
When everyone received these special abilities, we all felt so much more powerful than weโve ever been before, which sadly led to the division of our people. Everyone wanted to be able to take control of the situation while trying to figure out what was going to happen to our planet. Therefore, the three main groups arose; the three stages of twilight: Civil, Nautical, Astro.
The Civil group is full of the more โnormalโ citizens who want to still try to live their life, or perhaps figure out on their own what happened to this world. They donโt really have any true โleaderโ; however, there is a handful of people who try to keep things together within their system.
Next comes the Nautical group, which I would like to consider the โgood sideโ. The Nautical is a very complex group of people who use their abilities for good. This team is full of scientists, soldiers, doctors, and the leader, Tallis Conrad, with his deputy Rowena Adams. This diverse group is trying to figure out what exactly happened to our planet and perhaps trying to decide if itโs safe to stay or not. We are preparing for the worst.
Lastly is the Astro group. This group is also full of very diverse people with different kinds of abilities; however, they all follow one leader- who they consider to be their king: Alastor St.Calibur. He was a very successful businessman before the Red Night had ever happened, so itโs no wonder he became so powerful in our world. It seems that the Astro and Nautical are enemies, due to their different ideas. Astro has a system in which they only focus on abilities and how to develop them, they donโt necessarily want to leave our world- but they want total control.
Therefore, we stand here with our world divided as we attempt to gain more knowledge about what will happen to Terra Firma, and what will happen to us.
