I'm stealing the topic from Mothflight, who stole it from Fernstep. Also, I wrote this after the book originally came out, so it doesn't mesh with Darkest Night and River of Fire.
Around the end of Shattered Sky, Darktail reveals that he didn't kill most of the ShadowClan warriors who tried to leave, but instead got them captured by twolegs somehow. They're all stuck in a shelter somewhere. He taunts Rowanstar with the knowledge that his Clan is broken.
At the beginning of the book, Tigerheart is seeing Dovewing again, but there are no kits. Rowanstar is worried about the lost warriors, but can't afford to send a patrol to bring them back. Ivypool is angry at Tigerheart for starting up his relationship with Dovewing again. She loves her sister and is trying to dissuade her from it, but she's furious at Tigerheart, pointing out that he has a duty to his fragmented Clan, which he's ignoring by seeing Dovewing. She says that he's like a kit that never grew up, and that he shouldn't be deputy. She also tells him that if he truly cares about Dovewing, he'd end their relationship.
A little bit later, Dovewing is taken by the same twolegs that took the lost ShadowClan cats. Tigerheart goes to Rowanstar and tells him to send him to find the lost warriors. He doesn't even need a patrol, he'll go alone. Rowanstar says that he can't afford to lose his deputy, so Tigerheart steps down as deputy, and Rowanstar appoints a new deputy, Evilclaw. (Okay, that's not his name, but all we need to know about this cat is that he's awful and the wrong choice to lead ShadowClan. I'm just calling him Evilclaw because I don't feel like picking a cat for him to be.)
Tigerheart heads out, and Ivypool shows up to tag along. She knows that he wouldn't leave his Clan unless it was to find Dovewing, and she wants to help. The two strongly dislike each other, but they're united by how much they care about Dovewing. (Ivypool dislikes Tigerheart for the stuff outlined above, while Tigerheart is still angry at her for nearly killing Flametail's spirit.) On the quest, Ivypool criticizes Tigerheart a lot, and it's often deserved, but not always. However, Tigerheart becomes more mature over the course of the story, and Ivypool softens, apologizing for being so harsh before, while Tigerheart finally forgives her for Flametail. (Because of Flametail stuff, we also get some information on and flashbacks to Tigerheart's time in the Dark Forest.)
When Tigerheart and Ivypool get to the first twolegplace, Fuzzball really wants to come with them. They try to ditch him, but he follows them to the train station. He springs out at them, and all three of them accidentally fall into a train. From there, they're forced to keep him around, and he grows from a clumsy kittypet to someone truly worthy of being a warrior.
After reaching the city, Tigerheart, Ivypool, and Fuzzball are taken in by the guardian cats, who know where the shelter is. Instead of just being a random side story, the point of the guardian cats is to teach Tigerheart how to be a good leader, so he learns leadership lessons as he tries to help them. After a little while, Tigerheart and Ivypool decide it's time to try to save the cats from the shelter. They leave Fuzzball behind and take some of the guardian cats with them. The attempt is a disaster, and while they do manage to get Dovewing out, some of the guardian cats are captured instead. None of the ShadowClan cats get out, although Spire is a cat in the shelter, and he takes the breakout attempt as his sign that it's time for him to escape.
Tigerhart actually considers the mission a success, since they saved Dovewing. Ivypool becomes furious with him, and says that he's supposed to care about his Clanmates as well. She's happy that Dovewing is okay, but Tigerheart is being completely irresponsible, yet again. They end up physically fighting, releasing all the tension that's been building up. After the fight, they collapse, exhausted, and talk things out. They don't reconcile at this point, but they both admit to making some mistakes.
Tigerheart and friends train for a second attempt at the shelter, and also face new challenges that arise for the guardian cats. Fog shows up around this point. She wants to take what the guardian cats have, by any means necessary. During this time, Tigerheart greatly matures.
Eventually, it's time for the second attempt at the rescue. This time, they actually bring Fuzzball along, and his knowledge of kittypets and twolegs is instrumental in helping them succeed. Nothing goes as planned, but through teamwork and innovation, Team Tigerheart manages to save everyone and escape. On the way back, they're ambushed by Fog, who was lying in wait for them, knowing they would be exhausted after the rescue attempt. One of the guardian cats sacrifices themself to stop Fog and get everyone else home safely.
Very soon after the attempt, Spire has a vision that Rowanstar is on his final life. Tigerheart has wanted to stay with the guardian cats and live a peaceful life with Dovewing, but knows that if he does, it will be Evilclaw who leads ShadowClan next. He says that it's time to go back home. However, because he got knocked onto the train by Fuzzball at the beginning, he doesn't know which tracks to follow to get back. Spire knows the way back, and Tigerheart trusts him to lead them there. The cats race back to ShadowClan.
During the journey, Tigerheart realizes that he's important to ShadowClan, while Dovewing is the heart of ThunderClan. He accepts that he can either have his Clan or Dovewing, but not both. They mutually decide to end their relationship, but remain on good terms this time. At this point, Ivypool and Tigerheart fully reconcile, and they become friends.
It's revealed that Spire is sick, and by leading them, rushing back to get to ShadowClan, he's been destroying his health. He collapses just before they would have reached the lake. Tigerheart leaves him with cats that can care for him, and tells him to rest and recover. Before Tigerheart leaves, Spire tells him that Rowanstar lost his ninth life, dying a hero, and that Evilclaw will be going to get his nine lives the next night.
The cats race back towards ShadowClan so that they can get there before Evilclaw gets his nine lives. They return to ShadowClan just before Evilclaw is about to leave. Some ShadowClan cats are resentful of Tigerheart because he hasn't seen the hard days that they endured. Tigerheart confronts Evilclaw, and Evilclaw becomes worried that the ShadowClan cats will reject him for Tigerheart. He angrily says that he deserves his nine lives. Suddenly, the camp is in peril. Maybe a fox breaks in to attack it or something. Evilclaw takes this as an opportunity and ditches the Clan, running off to get his nine lives before anyone can strip away his deputy position. Tigerheart stays and proves himself as a leader by helping ShadowClan defeat the fox with no casualties. He wants to make sure everyone is okay, but Puddleshine tells him to hurry to the Moonpool and stop Evilclaw.
Tigerheart rushes to the Moonpool, hoping he's not too late. When he gets there, he sees that Evilclaw has been delayed by Spire, who came to the lake anyway because he knew he was needed. Spire blocks Evilclaw's path and tells him that he is not the right cat to lead ShadowClan. Angered, Evilclaw attacks Spire and leaves him mortally wounded. Tigerheart challenges Evilclaw, telling him that he doesn't care about ShadowClan, just about himself. He says that Evilclaw is no true leader. Evilclaw snarls that he deserves to be leader, and that he's had enough. He attacks Tigerheart as well, and they face each other in battle. Evilclaw nearly wins, but Tigerheart remembers a trick that he learned from the guardian cats and uses it to get the upper hand, killing Evilclaw. However, he is mortally wounded as well.
Tigerheart lies down to die with Spire. Tigerheart apologizes, saying that if he hadn't come into Spire's life, Spire would have lived. However, Spire says that it was better to be free and to help Tigerheart than to live a long but meaningless life. Spire admits, "I had hoped to see the widewater before the end, but it's enough to die here, with you, beneath the sea of stars." Tigerheart tells Spire that he can join those stars. Even though he doesn't have any authority to do it, he gives Spire a warrior name, Spiresight. Spiresight dies right as Tigerheart weakly attempts to chant, "Spiresight! Spiresight!" Dovewing, Ivypool, and Fuzzball catch up to Tigerheart and he thanks them for helping him save his Clan. He finally dies, hoping that Dovewing can find someone else who makes her happy, and that ShadowClan chooses a leader that will restore the Clan.
In StarClan, Tigerheart is at peace at last. Evilclaw has been defeated, and the lost ShadowClan warriors have been returned. (Dawnpelt is actually dead, though, because having her alive would mess with Tigerheart's character arc.) He meets with Rowanstar, who says that Tigerheart has made him proud. Tigerheart is glad that he can finally rest, and wants to see Dawnpelt and Flametail. However, Rowanstar says that ShadowClan still needs him. Tigerheart is conflicted between returning to his life of hardship and finally being reunited with the cats he loves and misses. After struggling with the decision, he decides that his Clan is what's most important to him, and that returning to serve them is the only real choice. It's the choice he will always make, even if he's only need to pick ticks off the elders. Rowanstar tells him that he is much more important than that, and begins his nine lives ceremony.
Tigerheart is startled that he is to be leader, since he gave up his position when he left to save Dovewing. Rowanstar shows him a glimpse of the world of the living, and he sees that quite a few ShadowClan cats, including Puddleshine, reached the Moonpool just after he died. Rowanstar says that the ShadowClan cats have chosen him as their leader. Tigerheart receives his nine lives from Rowanstar, Toadfoot, Rippletail (RiverClan), Applefur, Dawnpelt, Spiresight, Hollyleaf, Blackstar, and Flametail. He receives his name, Tigerstar, and returns to life as leader of ShadowClan.
He wakes up and the ShadowClan cats cheer for him. Tigerstar gives a speech about how he has strayed in the past, but he understands now that his Clan is everything. He promises to lead them through the darkness, whatever it takes. If they are united, they will survive.
Then, he makes Fuzzball and the guardian cats who came with the group into official members of ShadowClan. Thinking of his brother, he gives Fuzzball the warrior name Flamespirit. Flamespirit is really excited by his new name, and says that it's a cooler name than Tigerheart. Tigerstar tells him not to push it. (My runner up for Fuzzball's name was Flamespark.)
The book ends with one last conversation between Tigerstar and Dovewing before they head back to their Clans. There's still a bit of sadness, but Tigerstar tells her that as long as she is happy, whether she finds someone else or not, then he is happy. They turn and head toward their Clans, and Tigerstar doesn't look back. He thinks that his carefree days are behind him. However, he has grown during his journey, and now he is ready to give everything he has for ShadowClan.
