This story was created in a chat about the Hybrids roleplay (can be found in the link section below). While we're always looking for new members, it should be noted that I've changed a few details about the world to fit my story. If you would like to join, please read and follow the world explained on that page.
NOTE: This is not broken up into chapters and updates will be pretty random. The only reasoning behind it is that I want this to be fun and stress free, so I didn't want to push myself to fit a certain schedule or word count. Despite the possible lack of organization, I'd still love if you guys read it.
Maxwell Harper is a young man, fresh out of college. Looking for a good way to make money, he ends up taking a job working with Rick Milton - a rich businessman. When Max arrives at Rick's house for his first day of work, he learns that the city has a secret. Everyone living there is a hybrid - a human with animal DNA. Max learns to look past his new friends' odd features and is in for a wild ride.

This whole story is the result of a late night conversation where I was winking and realized a spider hybrid could wink a lot more than I could with only two eyes.
Jack once tried to dye Donna's hair and he got in major trouble for it.

Just like I'd been promised, a small black car pulled up to the sidewalk where I was standing. I looked up as the driver rolled his window down just a crack. I couldn't see much of the person in the car, and what he could see was covered up by dark glasses and an overly large hat.
"Mr. Harper?" the driver asked, his cheery voice a stark contrast from the mysterious air of his arrival. When I gave a nod of agreement, he continued speaking. "Mr. Milton has been awaiting your arrival. Hop in and I'll take you there. By the way, I'm Beau, Mr. Milton's personal driver." That seemed to be all that the man, Beau, had in the way of introductions because he rolled his window up and I heard the doors of the car unlocking.
After a slight hesitation, I slid into the backseat and set my two duffel bags on the floor beside me. Beau looked at me in the rear view mirror, his dark sunglasses blocking out any view I had of his eyes. Though it was slightly suspicious, I tried to ignore the cold feeling of dread. After all, Rick Milton was a genius businessman. I couldn't turn down the chance to work for him.
Beau made a few attempts at conversation, but they all seemed to fizzle out after a few exchanges. With conversation out of the question, I pulled out one of the books I'd brought along and shut out the rest of the world as I read. Beau would let me know when we get there.
I was right.
An unknown amount of time later - I had gotten lost in my story and couldn't tell if five minutes or two hours had passed - we pulled into the garage of a large house. "Welcome to the Milton residence," Beau said with a chuckle. "You're in for a treat when you meet little Webster." With that, Beau opened my door before disappearing into the back yard.
The garage seemed oddly normal for such a rich man, but I didn't question it. I did, however, begin to question things when I looked into the front yard and saw spider webs decorating one of the trees. It was June. Wasn't that a little early for Halloween decorations? I just shrugged it off. Mr. Milton was certainly a busy man. Maybe he just kept the decorations up all year. It wouldn't be a surprise. After all, I had known a few people back home that seemed to leave their decorations up all year and they weren't busy. Or maybe he just really liked Halloween. My own sister was that way and Christmas decorations could be found within her house as early as September. She didn't seem to care that she was skipping two holidays.
With a deep breath, I pulled my gaze from the unseasonal decorations and knocked on the door leading from the garage to the house. It was a surprisingly modest house. While bigger than most, it was no mansion.
It took a few moments before the door opened, and I stepped back with a gasp. Surprised by what I saw, I didn't realize I stepped off the step and my heel caught on the concrete, causing me to crash down on the cold garage floor. "Uhhh..." I groaned, rubbing the back of my head.
The man... The dog... The creature... The whatever it was wore an expression of horror as it scrambled out of the house and kneeled at my side. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! Rick's right... I probably shouldn't throw the door open so fast. Apparently it scares people. But come in! I'll get you some ice or some pain killers or something. Rick isn't home at the moment, but he'll be here soon." He paused for a moment before his mouth opened in surprise. "Oh! I'm Jack, by the way. Rick's best friend. I kinda just chill here because I have nothing to do." Jack stayed silent after that, but his words were so rushed that it had been difficult to pick out everything he said.
At least I managed to get that his name was Jack.
Being spread out on my back on the concrete floor was not comfortable, so I propped myself up on my elbows and looked at how close I'd come to slamming my head on Rick's car. That would not have been a good introduction to my new boss.
"Come on," Jack stood up and bent down from where he was squatting to help me up. The dude was much smaller than me but seemed to have no trouble putting my arm around his shoulders and half carrying me into the house. Once inside, he lowered me into a kitchen chair and disappeared. A moment later, he reappeared with some bottled water and a bottle of painkillers.
I thanked him before swallowing two of the pills and draining the water bottle. Wow, I hadn't realized how thirsty I was until I was staring at the empty bottle in my hand. Jack was perched on the edge of the kitchen table, staring at me with his eyes narrowed.
Oh boy.
I really screwed this up. What if he was studying me? Sizing me up? What if he told Rick about my embarrassing fall? What if I lost my job before it even began? As these thoughts ran through my mind, I caught sight of the floppy brown ears atop his head and quickly wondered if it'd be considered rude to ask him about them.
As I opened my mouth to speak, so did Jack. We both shut out mouths at the same time and I could feel my face heating up slightly. "You can go first," I said, my voice a little squeakier than usual. Wow. I was so bad at first impressions... At least Jack seemed like a decent... thing. Jack shook his head. "Nah. I spooked ya back there. I think you deserve to go first," he offered. Knowing there was no use in arguing anymore, I nodded and looked him up and down. Though he appeared mostly human, he had two floppy tan ears on his head that matched the color of his hair. There was also a spot around his eye in the same color, a few shades darker than his pale skin.
"Oh, uh, sorry... I was just-" I really messed up. I could feel my face heating up at how rude my question seemed, even to me. "Nevermind," I finished weakly, looking down at my hands as I folded them in my lap.
"Hey." Jack's voice was a bit softer now, so I looked up when he spoke. He smiled when he saw that I was looking at him. "See, I don't live here, but I pretty much do. I'm here more than my own place, even at night. You know what that means? That means you'll see me a lot. Probably doing embarrassing things and most likely in my underwear. This is a weird speech, I know, but the point is that pretty much anything you have to ask won't be embarrassing or awkward because you're really gonna get to know me." His words were slower, though they only helped me a bit. I still knew my question was rude. I wouldn't ask about a big scar on someone's face, so why would I ask about the weird skin coloring or the ears?
"Oh, uh, well, I was, uh..." Wow. I couldn't even get this one question out. I really hoped this wasn't some kind of test. Maybe Rick would pop around the corner and tell me I failed. This whole trip would be for nothing and I'd have to go back home as a failure. I straightened up and finally looked into Jack's expecting face. "Your ears. Tell me about your ears," I blurted out, my face turning even more red than before. Oh boy.
Jack looked confused for a moment before he broke out laughing. "Yeah, I know. It's pretty stupid isn't it?" His reply only managed to confuse me more. He noticed my look of confusion and tilted his head. "Jack Russell Terrier, dude. My parents thought it'd be hilarious to name their Jack Russell Terrier son Jack."
"Dog son?" I repeated.
"Are you sure you're okay, Max? Did you hit your head? I can take you to the hospital," Jack offered. I could hear the worry in his voice and suddenly wondered if I did hit my head too hard when I fell. Or maybe I fell asleep and Beau was still driving me to Rick's house? Without even thinking I leaned forward and grabbed one of Jack's floppy ears in my hand before tugging on it. It was soft and warm like a true body part and Jack helped in surprise before pulling away from me.
"They-They're real..." I muttered, staring off into the distance. Okay, so I wasn't hallucinating, but I could still be dreaming, right? No... his whole body hurt when he hit the ground. Wasn't that a sign that one wasn't dreaming? What had he gotten himself into? "I-I'm sorry, Jack..."
"Wait... what are you?" Jack asked, his eyes wandering my body before he stood up and looked over at my back. When he found nothing that answered his question, he flopped back down in his chair and looked at me. "Maxwell Harper..." He sighed as if I were a difficult child sent to the principal's office for the third time that week. "What are you?" His voice was quiet and he seemed to lose whatever cheerfulness he had before. It was replaced by simple confusion.
What am I? How was I even supposed to answer that question? I was Max. Unfortunately that answered the question of 'who' I was, not 'what'. "Uhhhhhh..." Jack was still waiting for an answer. "Well, I'm not a dog," I said. It was sad, but it was all I could think of at the moment.
"You're..." Jack's eyes lit up and he gasped. "You're human!" he said.
I wish I could've come up with some sarcastic or funny response and help pull some tension out of the room. Instead I just stared, my mouth hanging open in confusion.
"Of course you are! Oh man, this is great... Now we gotta be friends. Most of us haven't even met a human and now I'm friends with one," he laughed. Jack's total change in mood confused me, but I didn't push him. I was just... well, confused was an understatement.
"Wait... if you're not human... if people here haven't even met a human... then what are you guys? Isn't Beau human?" I asked, frowning as I remembered the fantasy books of my youth. Were they vampires or werewolves? Or some other werecreature. Werechickens, for example. That would be creepy... Though Jack's dog parts made him think that was very unlikely.
Jack laughed. "Nah. Beau isn't human. He looks like it, doesn't he? Check out his butt next time you see him."
"His butt? That's weird, Jack..." Or maybe I was just a little too awkward to be as flirty as guys like Jack.
Jack shook his head. "No. Not like that. He's got a tail. He's a cat. His ears and eyes are always hidden by that stupid hat and glasses he wears," he explained.
I blinked at the new information. This had to be a prank, right? Except Jack's ears had been so warm and soft, and stayed securely attached when I pulled on them. This had to be real. He whispered his last question, unsure if he wanted to know the answer. "Then what are you?"

So real life Stella is staring at me right now and I think she's plotting my murder. But I mean, that'd be cool and all at least I would get to go out by her paws. "Also, this is somebody talking so that's chill." And now Stella is trying to take a nap. She's weird, doing that tail-twitch thing like she's gonna pop up and attack me even while she naps. Cats can be vicious, man.
