I'm reading Sign of the Moon again and saw this blurb, So have the cats just been moving between the three territories (Lake --> Mountain --> OG Territories) and back for all of time? I'm guessing Rock was born in the mountains and the timeline went:
OG Territories --> Mountains (Rock was born at some point) --> Lake Territories --> Mountains again --> OG Territories --> Lake Territories again
Are we going to find out that this is all just a continuous loop of changing territories? I mean they obviously can't go back to the OG territories anymore, but at least it's been confirmed that Rock was born in the Mountains and then followed those cats (whether spiritually or physically) to the Lake Territories.
Rock has always been interesting (if not just really weird) to me, and I like to find out more about him. There just doesn't seem to be much as the Erins/Editors seem to want to keep him a mystery (sort of how they wanted to keep Starclan mysterious for the OG series). Thoughts on Rock?

Not... exactly. Sign of the Moon is wrong.
It's inconsistent with Outcast (which says Rock lived by the lake), it's inconsistent with The Last Hope (which says Rock and Midnight are immortal beings that saw "the first sunrise"), it's inconsistent with the field guides (which say Rock lived by the lake), and it's inconsistent with basic sense and logic when it comes to Rock (which says that Rock being "the first Stoneteller" makes no sense because he's always been portrayed as separate from both the Clans and the Tribes, not to mention that no other book gives any indication there were cats living in the mountains before Half Moon's Tribe). Him originally being a mountain cat is totally at odds with everything we're told about him in every other book, so Sign of the Moon is simply wrong and should be ignored.

Maybe Rock was born in a cave b/c he was originally an actual rock, similar to his stone-cold personality. He just became a cat and rolled out of the mountains to see the first sunrise.
/s
Why do they have to make Rock and Midnight so confusing? I just don't understand their purposes tbh. Midnight was fine to have for TNP (but unnecessary), but she wasn't really needed for much else. Starclan could have told Leafpool about the badgers. Rock on the other hand; what is his purpose other than Walmart-brand Starclan? He's just...annoying. as his entire (nonsensical) backstory. If he had something concrete and consistent then fine but he just...doesn't (I blanked on all the other inconsistencies, I've just started rereading the series to catch up essentially).

My best guess is that by the time OOTS rolled around, Cherith simply forgot about Rock's original story in Outcast and thought making him "the first Stoneteller" would be fun.

Wasn't Half-Moon the original Stoneteller? I think I prefer Rock being the OG Stoneteller (Don't really care for Half Moon as sh seems to just be a love interest for Jay), but I'd also be happy seeing him as a mystery; maybe he comes forth as the cat who helps those souls who have faded or omsething? That'd be cool.

That'd be cool. Sign of the Moon tells us that Rock was the first Stoneteller, then it tells us that Half Moon was the first Stoneteller. It's using different definitions, of course---Half Moon was the first Stoneteller of the current Tribe, while Rock was supposedly the first of the cats that lived in the mountains even before that. So that part isn't actually a contradiction, it's just confusing language. The contradictions come from how Sign of the Moon compares to other books like Outcast or The Last Hope.

Ah I gotcha. Yeah it is kind of confusing; I guess I'm just going to have to keep reading is all. Part of it is also that I've just lost interest in Rock; he's boring. He could have been cool but instead he's just this mostly angry hairless, blind, non-dead-non-alive cat being that can't really do anything.
And I doubt he'll become anything too but it'd be nice to know that the souls of cats don't just poof into nothing and are instead guided to a higher power/higher peace/reincarnated, etc.
