Hollycloud's rebellion is not as secret as it seems, as Cinderstar has an anonymous spy on the inside of the secret mutiny. Cinderstar foils their plans by not choosing any of the cats part of the rebellion to go to the gathering. While the rest of the clan is gone the camp is invaded by a seemingly random group of rogues and Leafclaw, Frostface, Kinkcloud, Dapplepaw, and Rosepool are killed.

The next gathering is that night. Hollycloud, despite not being chosen for the gathering, runs there, and reveal Cinderstar's betrayal. Cinderstar is chased off by the other cats, but Pulpthorn is killed in the fray. Hollycloud is chosen to be the next leader, and she makes Sorrel deputy.

The same group of rogues strike the clan by surprise, and this time they are led by Cinderstar. It is revealed that Hollystar didn't gain all of her nine lives due to the former leader still living, and in the battle Hollystar loses her last remaining life. Sorrel, Darklight, and Lakelight are also killed in battle, and Cinderstar takes over the clan once more with her small group of rogues. She chooses another rogue as her next deputy. The clan seems to be overrun with rogues.
