An accident occurs while building upon the Apprentice's Den and Ambermoon, Brackenpaw, and Berrypaw are killed and Bramblepaw is wounded. Bramblepaw's wounds are too great to continue warrior training and she becomes the next medicine cat apprentice. Cloudtail becomes Hollypaw's new mentor.

Hollowspark is expecting Pulpthorn's kits and moves to the nursery. Nettlefang also moves to the nursery aftr claiming she is expecting Pulpthorn's kits to. Drama unfolds between the three and Nettlefang ends up leaving the clan and takes her unborn kits with her.

Cinderstar finds out that Hollycloud knew she killed Strongstar, and tries to poison her with tampered prey. However, Honeycloud eats it by mistake and dies. Snowspark is named Rosepaw's new mentor.

Cinderstar launches another nefarious plan to kill Hollycloud and sends a patrol with her on it to an area infested with adders at the moment. The patrol suffers heavy casualties and Ashleap, Tigerstripe, and Lionfur die, but Hollycloud survives the incident.

Hollycloud secretly forms a rebellion group against Cinderstar, and many of the Clan joins, including Pulpthorn, Frostface, Kinkcloud, Hollowspark, and Leafclaw and her kits. They plan to announce Cinderstar's betrayal at the gathering, before forcing Cinderstar to step up as leader, and Pulpthorn becomes leader. Brackenfur dies of greencough.
