Bonestar leads a party to chase the dog off the territory. The attack fails horribly and many fall in the fight with the vicious dog. Bonestar loses his first life, Duskpetal, Bluethunder, Greenfrost, and Forestpaw are killed and Tansypaw is severely wounded. She survives, although she cannot continue her warrior duties due to her sustained injuries and is forced to become a medicine cat apprentice.

Shrewpaw, Rootpaw, and Thymepaw devise a plan to chase off the dog from the territory. Tansypaw comes with them as she misses being a warrior apprentice. They track down the dog in its nest and discover the reason it is so viscous is that it has a litter of puppies. The apprentices battle the dog but they aren't strong enough to defeat it. Thymepaw is killed and the other are sadly forced to retreat.

He proposes both ideas to his deputy and the warriors to see which would be more efficient in leading the dog away.

The clan chooses the latter. They move the pups far off the territory while the mother dog is distracted. The vats lead the mom back toward her pups and destroy the dog nest so she does not return. The plan goes off without a hitch and the clan rejoices their success by giving Shrewpaw and Rootpaw their warrior names.

A search party finds the scent of Henpaw in an odd Twoleg object with pellet food in it. Shardfire goes inside it to investigate and springs the trap. She is unable to escape and the patrol could not free her in time. The rest of the patrol is forced to abandon the deputy as a twoleg arrives and takes Shardfire away in a monster.

Henpaw's siblings come together and search the twolegplace for her and the missing cats. They eventually come across a large twoleg nest with many cats trapped inside, including all of the clans missing members. A terrible leafbare hits the Clan, causing a mixture of starvation, greencough, and flooding. This kills off a great number of cats, drawing many of Bonestar's lives, and leaving only a few cats standing by the time that newleaf arrives.
