What I think would have been interesting:
If the plot line with Darktail got extended over the entire arc, with SkyClan being critical in defeating him. This could show why it was so important for them to join the four other Clans, and allow the whole Darktail x SkyClan conflict from Hawkwing's Journey to come full circle.

Similarly, I think it would have been interesting if Darktail stuck with the whole "we're SkyClan" bit from The Apprentice's Quest, tricking the four Clans (and the readers, even!) into thinking his cats were what became of SkyClan, only for the real SkyClan to show up, bruised and battered, and shocking everyone, later on. After a good book or two of the charade. This would then, of course, lead to war.
The whole ShadowClan debacle could still be included, too, with Darktail pouching ShadowClan cats and/or having "SkyClan" take over ShadowClan altogether. And imagine if he found Twigkit and Violetkit way back when and posed as their father.
Anyhow, there's a bunch of AU scenarios that popped into my head -- what would you guys have done differently with AVOS? :-D
