In Secrets of the Clans, Shadowstar is said to have been a battle-hungry leader and distrustful of her own Clanmates. However, except for maybe her slight annoyance towards Gray Wing a few times, she is far from distrusting and battle-hungry.
So, this got me thinking... what if it isn't necessarily a retcon? What if she is remembered like this on purpose? History is told by the winners, after all, especially when the cats have no written records to keep track of.

I always imagined that those tales were originally of SkyClan, but as time went on the story changed as it was passed from cat to cat. Since no one remembered SkyClan, no one knew any better. ShadowClan's recent reputation didn't help matters either.

That makes sense. ShadowClan would remember her for the wise and noble leader she was, while the other Clans would assume she more resembled their perception of modern ShadowClan.

The Secrets of the Clans thing is false. Shadowstar is not battle hungry in anyway. Sure she's stubborn but she does what's best for her clanmates and did a great job leading the group when Moss Shadow died. Shadowstar was probably ShadowClan's best leader and I hope there's one day a cat just like her to bring ShadowClan out of the dust and into it's glory days again.

You're missing the point completely, which I thought I made pretty clear in the post. I'm not saying that she actually was a battle-hungry and suspicious leader, I'm saying that (if we are to assume it's not a retcon) maybe her reputation got twisted around over the years. I've read DotC, so I know what she's like. Did you just not read the second paragraph or something? And even then, I make it clear in the first paragraph that her portrayal in DotC contradicts what SotC says about her.

The Secrets of the Clan legend is how the modern Clans perceive their founders. Logically things are going to be torn about and changed throughout history, so it makes senseZ SkyClan is excluded all together so it’s likely they had a Sky, in said legend before he was taken out of the legend; all together.

I don't think Secrets of the Clans is Canon anymore anyway. So I just choose to ignore. A shame, though, because it was one of the better written books.

It's actually quite fascinating, because for all that the Clans pass on stories (like Rock being shouting about how talking so often about dead cats keeps them alive, and Jayfeather being insulted that Rock was talking crap about the Clancats' culture) through the elders and everything, things get twisted...just like in real life. Even with StarClan right there and communicating, we've already seen that the Clancats sometimes purposefully remain ignorant, like how the ShadowClan cats insisted that Darktail's ideals were better, even though it literally goes against everything the Clans stand for -- murder, violence, etc. History is retold thousands of times, and for each game of telephone, it's inevitable that things will change, so the ShadowClan cats twisting Shadowstar's personality makes sense, because it reflects how they've become in the recent years.

Yeah, nobody's talking about how noble ShadowClan used to be if Brokenstar is in charge.

shadowstar a poem by bad_wcf_poet
in the guide she was like a bloodthirsty crook in the fifth series, she was quite reasonable maybe if the erins read their own books their continuity wouldn't be as amendable.

Is Moss Shadow some fusion of Moon Shadow and Shaded Moss?

They probably got it flipped in their head, and "Moss Shaded" doesn't make any sense.
