I think Rock and his past has always been a mystery. Kate wanted to include him in the DoTC arc (I was hoping he'd show there as well because who the heck is he and where does he come from??), but he just didn't fit in the plot. So his history and anything in regards to that shall stay unknown.

I'd like to think he was an uber-ancient who was the first leader of the ancients that lived at the lake- hence always being the one to perform the "test" of finding their way out of the tunnels. He was the one who came up with it, and would continue the tradition even after he died. Once the ancients left the lake, he was left behind as well, and when the cats returned to the lake he resumed visiting them.

It seems that Rock and Midnight have known each other for a long time and both have unknown backgrounds. I think it was said that they watched the first sunrise over the lake and if that is true then they have been around a long time.

the ancients became the tribe, so...perhaps rock is THE ancient, ancient...?
see, in my headcanon and AU, cats from around the land gathered at the lake due to a large spread draught. the lake brought strangers together and everything was in peace, so these strangers banded together to become what we know as the ancients (where Fallen Leaves' family would have been descended from).
i just wish they would explore the very first origins, such as the ancients....it would be more interesting than the dawn of the clans series imo

The DOTC series gave us how the clans began but it was not the beginning and I think it would be interesting how it all began. Maybe the ancients came from the sky, from a planet ruled by talking cats. Just a little humor because I love science fiction as well as cats.

He claims to be the first Stoneteller because the ancients were first in the mountains before they moved to the lake.

It started at the lake. The tribe was at the lake then they went to the mountains and then to the forest and back to the lake. Jay's Wing (Jayfeather) guided the tribe cats from the lake to the mountains. I don't remember the tribe being in the mountains before the lake.

Somewhere in Sign of the Moon, right before Jayfeather was back with the Ancients. Can't tell the page number since pdfs are different.

I have been questioning this for a while. I believe that Rock formed the Ancients. When we first meet them they already have an established society. I believe he began the Ancients and always preformed the Sharpclaw ceremony. I think he lived in the tunnels which is why he knew them so well. I also think the Ancients knew that he was dead. I noticed Fallen Leaves was not surprised to see him in the tunnels and no cat was concerned about him or asked about him when they planned on leaving. I actually think that he is the most powerful cat in the series and was the reason for Jay's Wing's disappearance. But I do think that he was the first leader of the Ancients.

The earliest point in the timeline is when Rock was still alive and the Healer of one of the three tribes at the lake:
- Secrets of the Clans
So it basically went like this:
-> Three tribes at the lake whose leaders were known as Healers (but did not take on the name Stoneteller) -> (not sure exactly about this part but to make his statement in Sign of the Moon work with SotC's information I'd say they journeyed to the mountains then back to the lake and eventually became the Ancients (Sharpclaws and Softpaws) ) -> Jay's Wing leads them back into the mountains and appoints Half Moon the first Healer to be called Stoneteller -> the Ancients become the Tribe -> part of the tribe journeys to the "Old" Forest from TPB and are now seperate from the tribe (The Ultimate Guide calls those pre-Clan cats "Early Settlers") -> The tribe eventually becomes the Tribe of Rushing Water and the Early Settlers found the five Clans -> The Clans eventually journey back to the lake
