I liked their relationship, at least as far as the manga is concerned, but I think they should've just stayed friends. It also doesn't help that I never cared for any of their kits at all, either. And if they did want to give ThunderClan new blood, they could've just paired Millie with someone else.
Or maybe have Graystripe father her kits without there necessarily being a romantic reason behind it. Maybe after Stormfur leaves and seeing Firestar with his own kits and grandkids makes Graystripe realize how he'll never have that, and Millie—having a desire to have kits herself—offers to have kits with him. And then they'd all be a happy, healthy family without any unnecessary drama at all.
