I’ve been thinking lately, was there any point to Spark and Alder even existing? We used to assume (or was canon) that Squirrelflight was barren. I’m pretty sure the Erin’s went back on this so they could have protagonists in AVoS, but are they even relevant outside of TAQ? Spark has all but disappeared and Alder’s personality died. It’s clear they were shoved aside for Twig and Violet, so did we even really need them in the first place?

Not really...as awesome as Sparkpelt is, she technically could'v just been a fellow denmate that was Alderheart's best friend, who he was also insanely jealous of/felt inferior to like in the books. Plus, that'd give a BG character a personality. With her gone, that's one less SquirrelBramble kit. Concerning Alderheart, he could've been the son of any character. I mean, we don't really play much on him being their kit. I assume they want him to have been anxious/worried about living up to the legends, but that didn't really come through, because he was anxious about everything in general (which was adorable, and I miss that).
It probably would've been better if it was just him as Lion and Cinder's son, while Spark was a fellow denmate, or even pushed up to Lilyheart and Snowbush's first litter so that Alder was their only kit, then they have another litter of two or something, to give Twigbranch foster siblings who didn't pay her much attention like in canon. The adopted siblings bond between Twig and Alder would also have even more meaning here. Though I would miss Fern...maybe that role could've been given to another character, if the Erins hadn't gone all The Purge with greencough sometime before Bramblestar's Storm. That in itself didn't make sense, because they killed off a bunch of cats, but then the population got even worse.

Yeah, this was definitely something I was thinking about after River of Fire. We really don't need Alder's POV anymore. They really should have started with Twig/Violet or something, but its almost as if the entire story has changed now that Bramblestar's kits are not relevant. They didn't need kits either, I liked the idea of Jay/Lion being their adoptive kits.
I think having Alder as one of Lion/Cinder's children would have been a lot more interesting. I mean, I know they had kits but I can't even remember their names or what they've even done... it would have been so much better than having so many useless background characters.

It bugs me that they made Sparkpelt such an interesting character, and that she's never been a main character or had any POV chapters. She's like a young Firestar or Squirrelflight, and I would have enjoyed reading from her POV. Also, she's mentioned as looking just like Firestar multiple times. I can't believe they didn't call her Sparkheart, or even Sparkfire.
IIRC, they first said that Squirrelflight was barren when she wasn't for a plot point. I think Squirrelflight being told she was barren helped her decide to raise Leafpool's kits, but I may be mistaken. Perhaps if she'd known the whole time that she could get pregnant, she wouldn't be interested in raising Leafpool's, but if she thought she was barren, she might have thought, "oh, here's my only chance to have kits."
I've found Alderheart boring from the beginning. He doesn't act anything like either of his parents, and he and his sister seem to have no important role.

Alderheart is needed for the medicine cat POV. From TNP on we've had a medicine cat POV. Clearly they (the Erins) want us to have an omniscient view of the plot. We really can't get that if every POV is a warrior. And even in OS, they had Firestar get dreams from StarClan in order to tell us what's going on. Being able to commune with StarClan is said to be a rare gift. It'd be pretty strange if we have multiple warriors able to do it as well as the medicine cats.

Yeah I had a feeling it had to be the Erin’s wanting a medicine cat POV. But Sheesh... I think I’m all medicine catted out.

True, that definitely plays a role, but is it necessary who his parents are? Couldn’t we have another cat, maybe one of Lion’s kits, to play this role?

I was always against BramblexSquirrel getting back together. And then they made it worse with Squirrelflight all of a sudden being able to have kits all along! It's such a cop out. I have always said this. There is no need for BramblexSquirrel to have kits of their own. They already raised Jay, lion, and holly. Squirrelflight being barren made so much sense as to why she wanted and "had" to take in Leafpool's kits. Raising the three would be her only chance to be a mother, and she wanted to help her sister too. Win-win.
Squirrelflight suddenly being able to have kits is a cheap move. Also makes yellowfang a liar. Easily could have made the new protags lionblaze's kits. just make one of them a medicine cat. easy.

I never cared for them to begin with. As much as I love Bramble/Squirrel, I don't think they needed to have their own kits (although I wanted them to). They already raised Leafpool's litter. They're also pretty old now.
There could have been a great lesson of you don't need to birth your own children to be a good mother, but they had to give us a pair of boring Firestar clones.

I thought their dynamic was cute in TAQ. Too bad it got shafted out of the spotlight. They didn't really need to be Bramble and Squirrel's kits, though. If they were the kits of some random cat, it wouldn't have made much of a difference. And the whole thing with Yellowfang lying to and guilt-tripping Squirrelflight to adopt her sister's kits to cover for her bad choices was pretty terrible.
