Rereading Forest of Secrets and I found this.
"Fireheart knew how she felt. Many warrior fathers did not stay close to their kits, but Crookedstar had maintained a close bond with Silverstream. His grief at her death would be mixed with anger that she had betrayed her Clan by taking Graystripe as a mate."
That's definitely changed for the most part.

Hunh, so it's normal for fathers not to be so close to their kits there?

There's so many different fathers in the series on parts of the spectrum...if they go out of their way to be a bad father (Crowfeather, being the POS that he is), it's understandable for the hate. For cats like Spiderleg, however, I never understood the hate. He did try and we saw scenes of him with them. Firestar was kinda close to his kits, but not much. Bramblestar interacted with Holly & Co., but again, I think we imagine they had more scenes than they really did. Seemingly emotionally distant fathers in Warriors isn't a new thing, but some are picked on more than others, like Graystripe.

Some cats didn't even know who their fathers were, like Sandstorm and probably Graystripe.

Some cats didn't even know who their fathers were, like Sandstorm and probably Graystripe. The family tree stuff for a good amount of first gen WC arc didn't even exist until looong after those books were out, and even still the family tree wasn't acknowledged because it wasn't canon unlike later arc stuff. >.> And before anyone asks, no, it being on the wikia doesn't prove anything. There wasn't any family relations in terms of the named two (Sandstorm's family tree outside of her kits and all and Graystripe's tree in a similar case) because it wasn't even canon with the books, and it's certainly never gonna be acknowledged outside fanon.

I think it really depends on the individual, for the most part. There are fathers like Bramblestar and Firestar who did stay close to their kits as they grew up. And there are fathers like Stormtail, Spiderleg, and Crowfeather who weren't... I think it's expected that they have some closeness to their kits, though, seeing as those three cases were frowned upon in the books...

Dustpelt was such a great father that everyone else in thunderclan tried to show him up afterwards. Except Spiderleg who didn't care. Actually, I think one of the Erins said the reason that Spiderleg wasn't as good of a father was because his parents kept having kits and kinda ignored him, so he didn't know what to do. Could've heard that somewhere else though.

I remember that, ever since I first read it. It's certainly interesting to see how much has changed throughout the series.
