It was understandable, and Leafstar's reasoning was understandable. Who else would it have been? After Sharpclaw died, Waspwhisker was absolutely the best choice. No other cat entered my mind when I saw Sharpclaw die, and none but Hawkwing came to mind when Waspwhisker was taken. We had no set-up for any of the others to take over. It was set up perfectly for him.

If not for Leafstar wanting to cling to the other lake, I would say yes, he became deputy too soon. Or it felt like it even though it would have been moons since Sharpclaw's death and Waspwhisker becoming Deputy.
But it seems like Leafstar is a leader that needs deputy to challenge some of her decisions, a bit like Sharpclaw did. Hawking was the one that pushed Leafstar and showed her it was futile staying at the wrong lake, just because she didn't want to journey any more. The story set him up to be deputy but it wasn't too obvious that it was going to happen from the beginning. Still someone else would have been a better choice if the story didn't set Hawkwing up but I don't mind him being Deputy.
