I myself still don't know how to feel about these two books. However, I do like them more than Bramblestar's Storm and Yellowfang's Secret, which is saying alot because I couldn't stand those two books, especially YS.

I inserted spoilers just in case someone wanted to see a vague opinion of these SE without getting spoiled. I like Hawkwing's Journey because it feels like Hawkwing develops. He makes mistakes and has obvious flaws in this book. But they aren't massive (aside from trusting Darktail but he is a young cat and isn't built up to be perceived as always right). I didn't like him flip flopping on his opinion of Darktail, and basically Leafstar and Sharpclaw did the same. The book could have included more (maybe a chapter with Duskpaw so we can connect with his death better) and seemed really fast in some places and slow in others. But I also liked how no character (except Hawkwing) felt safe and they could die or get captured at any minute. That was something I sort of miss from OS. Strangely, I don't think Hawkwing should have been made deputy but I suppose I don't hate the idea. Tigerheart's Shadow bugs me. Tigerheart also flip flopped on a decision, and when you think he finally picked one he would change his mind. Because of his indecisiveness it made it harder for him to find Dovewing, but if he wasn't indecisive Shadowclan would have crumbled much sooner. Basically every decision he made was right. I would have loved it if the Guardian Cats taught Tigerheart something, but instead it was Tigerheart being right all the time and changing a group of cats that existed perfectly fine up until that point. I didn't like the ending much either, with Tigerstar actually going to Starclan and then coming back. I dunno, at least with Windstar she was dying but not actually dead. Having Tigerheart die and be brought back didn't serve a purpose aside from rushing to get to Shadowclan. I also disliked Dovewing when she was freaking out over Tigerheart dying and yelling at Shadowkit, but I could see why she would do that.

Surprising because I prefer Kate's books to Cherith's, but I enjoyed HJ more.
