And basically any other cat that becomes leader after their mate has died?
I don't know why, but it's always bothered me in a way that makes me feel bad for the cat. Gorse Fur was Windstar's deputy--she dies, and he immediately becomes leader. No time to mourn, or wait; then he has to live through nine more lives without her.
I don't know; I was just watching the Kids Again PMV and it made me think of that with the final scene. It's one thing to become leader, but to have your mate die and then live nine lives without them--that just sounds difficult. Are there any other instances of this? I know that there's Bramble/Squirrel, but I don't think she's going to be leader.

He's a tough dude. He was probably able to handle it.

He's a tough dude. He was probably able to handle it. I don't doubt it; n fact, I'm sure he was a great leader. I just can't imagine seeing the one you love the most die, and then be expectedf to not only take their place, but to live a long life without it. Just thinking about that hurts.

It certainly sounds like a sad situation now that I've thought more about it. If two cats from a mated pair both only have one life -- example being Lilyheart and Snowbush, since he recently passed -- then Lilyheart knows for certain that he'll be there when she dies. She only has to die once. So if she's nearing the end due to injuries or whatever and knows she's dying, she's aware she'll go to StarClan forever and be with him. That's it. It's simple.
That isn't the case when it comes to cats like Gorse Fur and Windstar. Say, if he gets greencough and dies, he will see her for a spare moment, and then live again. Unless he loses all his lives in one go like Tigerstar, he'll repeatedly live through "normal" means of dying -- on the battlefield with another Clan, swept away in a flood, defending a Clanmate from a badger, blahblah -- and yet will have to leave her again and again eight times with only a few fleeting moments together, since interactions between StarClan and the living aren't but a few moments. This'll happen until he either loses his ninth life "early" before old age, or old age itself, which can be a very, very long time.
It kinda hurts my heart to imagine!

Imagine if that's what happened with Firestar and Sandstorm (assuming Sandstar happened); she seemed so ready to die to see Firestar again--imagine she has to go through that nine times! It just hurts to imagine it. Leaders are strong, yes, but they suffer too--I think we saw this with Thunderstar a bit, but I feel like we could have seen it more with Wind/Gorse
