Did they know about Gorsetail's illegal romance? Having reread DR a couple of times, I'm starting to suspect they did. When her kits went missing, they seemed to be extremely upset. Obviously they'd be upset over missing kits, but they took it to a whole new level in this case. Most cats wouldn't immediately jump to the conclusion that another Clan had stolen them. The first assumption is that they wandered off or snuck out of camp. Why automatically accuse ThunderClan? It makes no sense. This whole thing could be brushed off as Onestar being his usual unstable self, but the fact that the missing kits are half-Clan is interesting.
First possibility is that they assume the father is from ThunderClan. Maybe Gorsetail was confronted with evidence that her mate wasn't in WindClan and she lied to protect her mate. Or they do know who the father is and it was a sort of coded threat so they could threaten RiverClan without having to admit the kits are half-Clan.
Or it could even relate to Smoke and Darktail. Smoke had told Onestar that she was going to raise Darktail to hate the Clans. Maybe he feared that Beechfur was planning to do the same with the kits. And then they did the coded message thing so as not to reveal the secret.
Or worst of all, maybe Onestar did it to punish Gorsetail for her crimes. Maybe he intentionally sent most of his warriors in the wrong direction so there would be less out looking for the kits. That would increase the likelihood of something happening to the kits. Maybe his intention was to have the kits killed and he only kept them after they were found so the secret wouldn't be revealed. That and they needed the kits anyways. As for the kits disappearing, I don't think he would have planned that. But he could have taken advantage of the situation to fit his twisted scheme.
Or maybe I am simply reading way too much into this, but this is interesting nonetheless.

Onestar had plenty of reason to suspect RiverClan had taken them. After all this wouldn’t be the first time RiverClan cats had stolen half RiverClan kits from WindClan. (Ironically both litters were she-cats only.)

I don't think so from memory, as it wasn't mentioned. It could be possible they knew, due to when the kits went missing they suspected Riverclan. Then again, they though it was Riverclan because blood was found near the border...
