I don't like this new, sympathetic, kind Jayfeather.
It's nice and heartfelt, but I don't like it. I feel like it would have been more realistic for him to have been even meaner and curter (curter? more curt?) as she was dying. I understand that Jayfeather has a special connection to Briarlight as she had been with him in the medicine cats' den for so long, and he had been the one to help her get better through PoT. It just seems unnatural, even in times of crisis.
And then later, Jayfeather telling Alderheart what a good medicine cat he is, and trying to protect him from a relationship with Velvet: Opinions?

I don't see anything wrong with this, though. Jayfeather has shown his soft side before, so this really isn't anything new for him; the only difference is that we're now looking at him through an entirely new generation's eyes.
He may be bad-tempered, but he genuinely does care about his Clanmates, especially his patients, and I imagine that losing a patient is usually hard for anyone in the medical field, no matter what their personality is like. Just because we don't usually see this side of him doesn't mean he's always like this. One certain trait shouldn't define an entire character.
And of course Jayfeather would try to protect Alderheart, considering what Leafpool—his mother—had gone through, and he himself knows what it's like as well.

As I said, based off his character most of the time, I feel it would have been more likely for him to have retreated into himself? If that makes any sense? Not that he's usually shy, but I feel like that reaction would be just as appropriate.

Jayfeather, unless Leafpool or Alderheart we’re helping out, spent the most time with Briarlight compared to everyone else- is say even more than Millie He was in charge of making sure she did her exercises every single day for at least 4 years. He was probably closer to her than he was with his actual kin at that point. Disaster after disaster, he’d probably would have thought she was the first to die every time. And even then, even the coldest cats would get upset if someone died of a sickness they just recently had. It all seems pretty understandable to me.

Jayfeather was one of the best supporting characters in this book, alongside Leafstar and everyone's favorite Fuzzball. I don't need to explain how ungodly hilarious every interaction between Jayfeather and Fuzzball was, but it was amazing how Jayfeather was able to hit just so many different emotional notes. Besides his fantastic dynamic with Fuzzball, there was his intense feeling of personal failure and loss after Briarlight's death. The way that he choked up when trying to speak in her memory was heart-rending even after I went through the book a second time. Then you had him and Alderheart sharing an incredibly touching mentor-apprentice moment where you can't help but smile a bit at how Jayfeather can't quite hide how much he really does care...
Ugh, I love my Jaybae so much. <3

Don't take this the wrong way, Jayfeather is my second favourite character, and I liked him better than Fuzzball in this book. I just think his reaction wasn't what I expected.

I like this, really. If there's one thing I'm always happy to see when it comes to Jayfeather is him showing his softer side. And to see him this way to a stronger extent, openly too, is a very nice addition to his character development. Him being meaner/more curt during it probably would've taken away from all that (And seems more unrealistic than him being emotional. Briarlight was probably like a friend to him afterall, anyone would get shaken losing that). He may be mean at times but he still cares for others and has a heart. Anyone wanted to hug the guy after seeing him get like that? Because I kinda do now.

How you handle such grief may not be how someone else does, ya know what I mean?

I totally dug this softer side of Jayfeather. I remember his despair and anger when Foxleap died in DS--that's how he reacts when a regular Clanmate dies, and it's such a nice piece of characterization. He's been taking care of Briarlight for years, and they've been great, supportive friends that whole time (kinda like Longtail and Mousefur, actually). She's probably his best friend in the Clan. So ofc he's going to be extremely upset when she dies (because of him, in his mind).
Him getting choked up at her burial was touching. I really liked Jayfeather's scenes in RoF in general, really. Between Briarlight, Alderheart, and Fuzzball, he has a lot of fun and/or emotional side relationships.

Jayfeather's starting to get a bit more likable to me again. It comes to show that snappy characters can have a good soft side at times.
