Alright so I started reading River of Fire this morning. So Alderheart is collecting Watermint for sick cats with Sparkpelt, Twigpaw and some WindClan cats but then this cat shows up called Havenpelt.. What do you think about this name? How does a cat even know what this is? First Our Puddleshine boy is sawing off Finpaw's tail. Now we have names like Snapkit, Havenpelt and Fidgetpaw...

There are so many dumb names in this book...sigh. I hate this name. I'm biased, though, because a lot of people like the new names and I'm more traditional (so I dislike Thriftkit, Lightkit, etc.) I think its less about traditionalism and more the names are bad. The original arc gave us onewhisker, longtail, runningwind, croodedstar, tallstar, brokenstar, and other very on the nose names that sound stupid without suffixes. Later names were designed to mean a bit more or at the very least sound nice and stupid names for thunderclan and named side characters were avoided. Avos seems to want to return to using these old style names which is a bad idea.

Plus, name changes were apparently way more common than what was said in The Darkest Hour, when Firestar wanted to know the ceremony. There were still ones that made no sense, like Runningwind you mentioned, and Yellowfang, but still. At least the prefixes tended to make sense, at the very least. Now the new ones make my eye twitch, and yes, going back to that is a bad idea all around now that we know more about the world lol for every name reveal we get for a new litter or character in the other Clans, I die a little inside. They seemed to get better naming-wise in TNP and PO3 so that they made sense and flowed relatively well, but now during OOTS, the new super editions, and AVO2 just...just grinds my gears. I'd hope they would do away with the Clan-related prefixes/suffixes, since I'm pretty sure they mentioned Runningwind was a mistake, as was Moonflower (can't remember if they mentioned Windflight was one), but here we are.

I personally don't think oots had that bad of names outside of ivypool and dovewing's names. Moonflower and windflight aren't that bad because sacred names were never something that was actually canon in the books and was only ever mentioned in an author chat. Its not something worth getting worked up over if it never really was canon and isn't canon for the authors anymore. Also bramblestar's storm seems to be when the bad names started.

Since Havenpelt seemed to come out of nowhere and we don't know of any of their kin, I headcanon that she was originally a kittypet named Haven.

Havenpelt was an apprentice in Bramblestar's Storm alongside Perchwing and Lizardtail.

I guess it's a nice name but I'm just confused on how she was named. Did her mother try to name her Ravenkit but then got her words mixed up and said Havenkit?
I don't even know how this name happened.

I looked everywhere and other than their being a lot of flower shops that have Haven in the name, the closest thing I can think of is that her mother’s kitting was during some type epidemic, and the area she was born was a safe haven. Given she was an apprentice in Bramblestar’a Storm, she very well could have been born during the battle in TLH.

I really don’t like a lot of the new names. I wish instead of coming up with these weird prefixes they just reused old ones (Brindle-, Dark-, Raven-, Dust-,... there’s so many) or even names that are usually only in the fandom but not horrendous like “Snapkit”. Like SkyClan names were supposed to sound weird because they were isolated from the other clans and didn’t really have much to go off of, but now names like ‘Sandynose’ and ‘Plumwillow’ are normal.

This is actually our second Shimmerpelt. The first one appeared in Crookedstar's Promise and, if I recall correctly, she was Leopardstar's foster mother.

Well, naming characters is a delicate art. You have to make the names interesting enough so the fans remember them, but not too crazy. I think that's the mistake the editors have made. They hopped right on the train to crazy town with many of these names.
But not every name was a miss. I quite liked Stem- as a prefix and it's pretty versatile too, which is something you want in a warrior name. Needle-, Frond-, and Bee- were also great prefixes. Experimenting with new names is always a gamble. That being said, yeah Haven- is pretty bad.

I quite like the names Snap, Stem, Thrift, Violet and a few others but Haven seems to be pushing it way too far for me.

To help...
Snap can come from a type of flower, Snapdragons.
Cone can come from the word pinecones.
Fidget was a word before Fidget spinners guys, it's a small movement to show nervousness.
Haven is another word for Safe Space, shelter, etc. I'm pretty sure if cats know about cat heaven, then Haven is not a stretch. Imo I see it no different than words like Dream, Wish, and Spirit, etc.
